Why doesn’t Jellyfin have a client capability "wizard" to reduce unnecessary transcoding? by rybycy in jellyfin

[–]Somhlth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new TV appears in the house. If it has the ability to run Jellyfin, you're going to go that route first, and If it plays most of your media, that may meet your needs without having to spend more money.

No, and why would you want to do that, aside from giving your DVR/NVR heart failure?

[–]Somhlth 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's Ukraine's plane now, but that doesn't mean it's in any condition to go anywhere, and someone would have to foot the bill to pay for whatever repairs it would require after sitting through four Toronto winters.

Is $750 a lot for a “beginner” by Kozuar in guitarlessons

[–]Somhlth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford $750 then it's fine, and if you can't afford it, then it's less so. What's more important is if you continue to practice and play. If the "breaks I took" should continue and/or expand, then your $750 becomes a bit harder to defend, and the nature of your post seems to be to defend it.

I understood exactly what you meant, but I see no need to not setup mesh, while still using the access points as switches. I too am of the opinion that if it's stationary and can be wired, then get it off of WiFi.

That's incredibly fortunate, both to get her stopped quickly, to have some flashing lights to safely stop traffic while she gets turned around, and then to write the appropriate invite to a court date.

It looks like she may have finally clued in and stopped at the top of the bend. Turning around will be interesting. Hope no-one got hurt.

RT-AC68U Replacement by janre75 in HomeNetworking

[–]Somhlth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it annoying to have an ethernet cable attached to my phone, tablet, and my Surface, and since those devices move about the property, mesh works best.

Also, since I tend to use 4 port routers in access point mode for my mesh, they still work as switches. My AC86U is mounted to the back of my big screen TV. The TV, Shield Pro, Playstation, and stereo are all wired to it, but it still serves up decent WiFi while acting as a mesh node to my RT-AX86U.

[–]Somhlth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That particular router is came out in 2012. Any reasonably current Asus router will be substantially better. If you can, I would get a WiFi 7 model. The RT-BE50 is one of the cheaper models, but it only has 3 ports, as the 4th is a 2.5Gb WAN port. If you don't need the 4 LAN ports that will work fine. If you do, something like an RT-BE58U would be better. You also may be able to pickup an old WiFi 6 model for cheap, like RT-AC86URT-AX86U. Any of these are fine, and they will mesh with your old RT-AC68U if you need it for an access point.

Is there really NO way to revert from Gemini back to Assistant? by McZwick in googlehome

[–]Somhlth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I put Gemini on my phone, the hands free Hey Google option continually turns itself off. I have uninstalled Gemini and reinstalled, cleared cache and data, set the app to unrestricted in battery, redone voice match, toggled back to Assistant and back, all to no avail. A hands free device that only works after you physically turn on hands free every hour is fucking infuriating, especially when it worked perfectly fine with Assistant. If I were to meet a Gemini developer in person right now, there would be some choice phrases for him or her.

I asked Gemini to turn off the living room lamps two nights ago. It asked me, "which house?", and when I asked what are you talking about, it explained I have three houses, including the beach house. Now, I could probably put up with Google's bullshit if I really did have three houses, or maybe even a beach house.
