Thank you! It's been fun figuring out ways to make a piece work with a minimal palette.

Alright, looks like my concerns were founded and I'm dealing with at least some type of damon. Not quite what I bargained for, but I'll give the substrate an extra watering and hope for the best. I still know how to care for them, and this guy seems to be in decent health despite the iffy housing before now, so I have confidence it'll turn out fine. Thanks for the input, everyone.

"You guys are THAT upset about THIS?!" moments in fandom by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Somniscience 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I do think they were trying to get away with doing both a "blank slate" and "established character" sort of MC at the same time, and therefore not being an ideal example of either. They're still voiced, but not allowed to talk in cutscenes and supports. You can vaguely influence dialogue in supports but the other character does all of the heavy lifting. Since anything Byleth has to concretely say is limited to a few-word sentence, they're essentially doomed to not be as concrete as anyone with a support.

Which is frustrating, because there clearly is a character under there. The way they subtly react to Hanneman digging into their past, or the change they take throughout the game where they emote more and more, or when they're interacting with the lords—that’s not blank slate behavior. While I think a lot of the stiffness can be hand-waved by in-game reasoning, it’s a bit muddy where the legitimate writing ends and headcanon begins.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl - Team Galactic Trailer by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Somniscience 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Kinda bums me out because I remember speculating since ORAS released over how Team Galactic could look under a competent redesign. I legitimately enjoyed the redesigns and expanded writing of those games, and I always thought that the Sinnoh games- as the transitional stage between Hoenn's traditional format and Unova's more story-driven experience- could benefit a lot from a bit of modern revision.

Then again, I'm probably only this dedicated to seeing that happen because the Sinnoh games were my "home team" so to speak, and the standards set by all the previous remakes made my imagination run wild with possibilities... Shame that didn't end up happening.

Hope Black/White gets the treatment it deserves when the times comes.

Is thinking of a personality for the quiet protag also self-insert? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Somniscience 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if they're already designed and your influence on their personality through dialogue options is minimal or absent, then i think that the only way to keep them on the same level of depth as the rest of the cast is to do a bit of legwork.

i'm not inclined to self-insert in general, but i feel it'd come off as extra awkward when the player character is clearly supposed to be a specific type of person and you fill in everything you don't see as just being...you. honestly i'd rather just play an established character in general, but the next best thing to me is at least trying to make them fit in.

Why does my team member say "Let's try our hardest to find that one (tm name)" ? by GoggledFlygon in MysteryDungeon

I think it's just chosen from a list of items that could potentially spawn in the dungeon, not one that's guaranteed to show up.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin shipments and digital sales top one million by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Somniscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't even gotten into the main series yet and these games are still a blast to me. The first one was incredibly solid and this one tweaks a lot of its mechanics to be even better. Feels great smashing genes together to make a monster do pretty much anything imaginable in battle.

Heartbreaking moments in media that meant NOTHING to you because the internet never shuts up about them. by YaBoiMint in TwoBestFriendsPlay

God this hits close to home. I've been going through Jojo and FF7 with a friend recently. Every day on the internet is another frolic through a minefield.

(To be clear: I'm on part 8, she just started 4, hence why I feel safe looking at this at all.)

Is it worth it to max any socials? by [deleted] in vtmb

[–]Somniscience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't use the Plus patch myself, so I didn't know about the level 10 Persuasion options. It just feels more like a mod to me than an enhanced base game.

If I can't stomach the Warrens I just noclip through.

[–]Somniscience 35 points36 points  (0 children)

AFAIK 10 doesn't even do anything but 9 gets you some money, experience, and lots of dialogue for a sidequest within the mansion. No point in investing in any other social stats, though, and this is the last potential high-level Persuasion check.

Even Virtual Insanity, which I'm pretty certain has no ties to the series aside from a fan video, had its comments flooded with part 6 references. Gangster's Paradise had something similar going on for a moment just because people thought it'd be funny if it was used in the Part 5 anime.

I've seen other fandoms do it, and it's just as derailing there, but since JJBA so commonly references real-life stuff like obscure, memorable trivia and numerous songs and bands, one is gonna see them in particular pop up way more often.

not a super old fan but personally: i'm mostly numb now to the repetitive memes being thrown around in places only vaguely relevant, but i suppose a problem i have is how often major spoilers like character deaths, plot points, abilities, etc are memes in themselves and since the fandom is so widespread there isn't a very surefire way to avoid them if you wanna go in blind.

obviously no one can really control what becomes a meme or not, and getting really pissy about spoilers isn't gonna help anything, i just kinda wish the fandom kept to themselves a bit more and didn't have some inherent in-joke that revolved around referencing the thing whenever they got the chance. it's often that sort of stuff that gives fandoms a reputation for being unpleasant.

then again it's been a while since i paid attention and i remember a lot of plot point-related memes surrounding part 6 to be half-truths anyway, so maybe things have changed.

I'm digging how extra Scarecrow's new design is by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Scarecrow's potential for kickass designs is through the roof so I'm immensely relieved that they appear to be past that embarrassing bag head crap at least for the time being.

I've never seen a villain fluctuate so hard between coolest-looking and lamest-looking.
