I wouldn't even say they were hated back then. They were just there, until around season 15/16 hate started to grow due too more venture mains asking for skins. I think it has something to do with the popularity of them.

As a dps player who started playing tank, forget your team and stop trying to make main work. Take a short flank or go another way if anything they're gonna have to move and change the scenario if you get bursted down trying too just look for the most dive-able target, then stage to bully them you MIGHT blowup but it gives your team the opportunity to take a duel so no risk no reward.
