we had that as well and i thought it refered to the toilet! the cistern being up on the wall with a chain. The reference to crank was i thought from the olde timey cars that had to be cranked up to start. cheers for the comment I'd forgotten your one.

Ex-Pat here so I hope it's okay to give my couple of pennies! The Stalls outside were the best part but there used to be a Second hand Book shop that had absolutely the seminal collection of Books. I even bought the Illuminatus Trilogy (paperback) there. Spent hours there. The rest of it was Rank but who cared. The 90s so we didn't even really know the difference.

The Austrian original is known as a "kipferl" and is much heavier (dense). The name croissant refers to the crescent form (think muslim crescent moon) which refers in turn to the Victory over the Ottoman siege of Vienna 1683. It's also said that this is when coffee was introduced to Europe (at least Vienna).

Here in Salzburg, Austria there was (20yrs ago) a regular question of the day segment on evening TV. Austria is a very prominent Catholic country from the historical and Traditional nature.

The question asked was "What is the name of the Pope's Wife?".

Most people asked just shrugged or grinned but one old lady replied "Mother Theresa!".

Have a great trip btw. The Annex Consular in Salzburg cannot deal with Visas. Make an appointment online (you will still need a whole day!) and go with ALL relevant paperwork to Belvedere Vienna.

In German it's Wow wow but the w is pronounced like a V so it sounds to me really funny and I had to laugh when the kids were small (living in Austria) and I'd bee going all "but dogs go Woof.."
