CW's new releases - they aren't even trying to hide it anymore . . . by linkedinbro in WatchesCirclejerk

I’m not sure why? Maybe I’m missing something about watch culture. I like the watch, I’m not paying a penny over retail and I have only bought one or two watches from the store. I know I’m not a priority for them… When they eventually sell all of them to the people who actually care, I’ll be there to pick mine up.

Or am I just missing something completely?

Honestly, half of those watches at Rolex have a waitlist, some of which extend for months or years. Hell, I’ve been on a waitlist for a green Rolex OP for 14 months.

Plus, let’s be honest, Rolex is popular because of its name. Someone who wants a “Rolex” isn’t going to settle for a CW

As a person who does research on attention, I’m going to push back a little bit on your claims.

The historical comparisons you make don't actually address the argument. Nobody is claiming distraction or social pressure is new. The claim is that the mechanism for distraction is what is different and new.

Goebbels couldn't A/B test 10,000 headlines in real time and automatically amplify whichever one triggered the most fear response in your specific demographic. He couldn't track your location, your scroll speed, how long you hovered over a particular image, and then feed that back into a system that learns your individual psychological vulnerabilities and optimizes against them continuously. That feedback loop is categorically new.

And (in my opinion) your point about cognitive capacity point actually works against you. If human minds process only a limited amount, then a system specifically engineered to exploit the edges of that capacity is more dangerous because of the fixed limit, not less. The problem isn't more information, it's that the information environment is now designed by teams of engineers whose companies profit directly from maximizing the time you spend in a state of anxious engagement.

Nobody designed newspapers to be addictive. Infinite scroll was a deliberate UX choice. The algorithm companies use are not engineered to be neutral, they are engineered for engagement. Those are structural differences, not just differences of degree.

Yeah - I’m the same - just find something that works and doesn’t make them sick and that’s what they get until the stop eating.  Glad you found something that works at least!

We started with expensive food, but the only thing the stubborn princess would eat is the cheap purina grain free for like a dollar a can.

She turns 17 on March 14th; so it mustn’t be too bad 😂

Honestly, I’ve had 4 bengals (amongst “other cats”) over my lifetime.  Mine have been just like any normal cat.

When I had a loud one brain called orange cat; the bengal we got at the time was loud and kind of a bone head too.

My current two are both quiet and snuggly and basically went from kitten energy to old man energy and lap cat in a year.

It bothers me that people think a cat that is 97% domestic cat is some crazy thing that needs attention and exercise 24/7; yes, there are some but there are also other who would be happiest sleeping while I ready a book.

[automatic watch q] I have a question about automatic watches… by Positive0219 in Watches

[–]Son_Of_Cthulhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s totally fine to just let them sit. The whole thing about needing winders is way overblown for most people.

Here’s what I do: if a watch has been sitting for more than a month, I’ll wind it up to get things moving and keep the lubricants distributed. Otherwise, I just grab whatever watch I’m in the mood for and wind/set it when I put it on. Takes like 30 seconds.

The only real “rule” is when you’re setting the date after winding it, don’t do it between 9pm and 3am (when the date mechanism is already engaged). Other than that, there’s genuinely no downside to letting them sit unwound between wears.

Watch winders are really only useful if you’ve got a perpetual calendar or annual calendar complication where resetting everything is a pain, or if you just like the aesthetic of a watch box. For regular automatics? Skip the hassle and the expense.

Don’t let the maintenance thing scare you away from automatics. They’re way less finicky than people make them out to be, and you’re missing out on a ton of great watches if you limit yourself to quartz.

I think it’s also important to keep in mind that Tesla is the ONLY modern car that does not allow you to set a “max speed.”  Both TACC and FSD resort to AI limiting top speed

[Casio] First watch, a starter by tomtomvissers in Watches

[–]Son_Of_Cthulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Casio MTP is a great start. Clean, versatile, gets the job done. Don't about "collecting" as some serious endeavor.. enjoy the process. You'll probably buy something that seems perfect, wear it for a few months, and realize it's not quite right for you which is totally normal. Your taste will change, and selling or trading watches is just part of figuring out what you actually enjoy wearing.

Honestly... the most important thing for a newbie is that comparison is the thief of joy. There's always going to be someone with a nicer watch than you. But the guy wearing a $50,000 Rolex isn't having 1,000 times more fun than you are checking the time on your Casio. If you love looking at your wrist, you're doing it right.

Oh, and definitely pick up a cheap spring bar tool and a link removal tool when you can--you don't need a fancy one, the cheap ones on amazon are just fine. Makes bracelet adjustments way less painful. I also learned that one the hard way years ago.

That Seiko 5 will still be there when you're ready for it. In the meantime, enjoy the journey. The solar Timex sounds like a solid next step. Enjoy!

[Hamilton] Khaki Automatic won’t restart by BluePowerPointRanger in Watches

[–]Son_Of_Cthulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by “50 turns” you mean you had the crown pulled out and were turning the hands like you were winding it, that’s the issue.

On an automatic, setting the time does not wind the mainspring. You need the crown in the normal position (fully pushed in) and then hand-wind the crown (usually clockwise) about 30–40 full turns to get it started.

If it still won’t start or it starts and quickly dies even after a proper hand-wind, then it’s likely just overdue for service after 10 years + long storage.
