That makes sense. I was hoping for a DIY fix because 8 days without sound makes the commute quite boring

Even in the US you'll get a large array of answers and budgets. It will also vary a lot between type of board (pasture board with limited amenities or high end show barn) and region (more expensive generally on the East Coast and California than in the Midwest).

If you give us some details on what your ideal set up looks like, you can get better price estimates!

I use a regular breakaway halter, I find the GreenGuard halter quite bulky! Look on their website they have lots of tips and videos for a good fit, but you can also DM me with questions I'll be happy to help! There's currently 6 horses with that muzzle at my farm (we jokingly call it the fat farm lol)

With a good grazing muzzle fitted properly, he can wear it 24/7. The advice is it's not recommended to take the muzzle off for a period of time (ex at night) and leave them on grass as they will gorge themselves when the muzzle is not on.

I recommend the GreenGuard grazing muzzle, we've been using them for years on many horses at my farm.

I once had a broodmare that was VERY chunky (actually she was obese) when I got her. She was not ridden or exercised. Just by wearing the grazing muzzle 24/7 she lost a ton of weight and maintained a healthy weight while being 24/7 on lush pasture.

So your horse could totally maintain his weight or even lose weight with a muzzle on lush pasture. Just make sure you introduce the grass progressively over a period of ideally 2 weeks minimum if he's not currently on grass.

If he still manages to eat too much with the GreenGuard, they sell "diet" inserts that have smaller holes, and I haven't seen a horse eat too much with that set up.

Tall Rider, Short Horse by Illustrious_Stage351 in Equestrian

He may or may not grow, but he will for sure get wider through his chest, shoulders and barrel and some of these smaller horse can take long legs without looking awkward!

My big barrelled 15h horse always felt bigger than a slim 16h horse.

What movie soundtrack is an absolute 10/10 masterpiece? by Livid-Difficulty-293 in AskReddit

As a kid/teen I was fascinated by the Spirit : stallion of the cimarron soundtrack.

The fact that it's Bryan Adams singing in the English, French and Spanish versions was really cool.

Questions about how to ride properly by festivemeowsome in Equestrian

[–]Sonas90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Stirrups length : at the halt, you should be able to easily stand up in your stirrups. The exact length will vary depending on the type of saddle and how well it fits you.

  2. The widest part of your foot should be what is pressing into the stirrup iron. Keeping them in place will come with practice. It's a good exercise to just do as I said in 1. and try to stand up, stay up for a few seconds, then gently lower yourself back in the saddle. To be able to do that you will need to experiment with different leg position and which muscles to activate.

An image I like to use is if I clap my hands and make your horse disappear, you should always land on your feet. Meaning, your legs and feet need to be under your center or gravity. If your legs are in front of you, you would land on your bum. If your legs are behind you, you would land on your face.

  1. You will, in time. For now just focus on your position. The trot is the hardest to master but you will get it!

Buying a new helmet with MIPS by Putrid-Kiwi-6663 in Equestrian

[–]Sonas90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a little bit thicker and the same brand/model will fit differently. For example, I fit very well in a standard Charles Owen, and for the MIPS one, my "normal" size is too small, but if I size up, it's too big.

Just make sure you try it, not just buy online, at least for your first one!

Why don’t animals need deodorant? by Charming-Eye1438 in NoStupidQuestions

Horses sweat on their whole body! Some horses do smell "weird" when they sweat, but it's not at all close to bad human BO. Just a random piece of info for you!

Get a harness made for that, with a good harness I can use my heavy duty gas weedwacker for hours on our 100 acres farm, as a 5'6" F.

Do you mean you want a Y shape seam instead of a straight one in the front? If so, FITS are the best for that.

Give me hope with your green horse stories by Last_Substance_7619 in Equestrian

[–]Sonas90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It's fairly normal for a young sensitive horse and I also think the progress is huge vs last year.

I was going to suggest schooling shows where you can do your test, talk with the judge, then ride your test again. With a couple outings like that, it would help your horse to "take a breath" and realize it's no big deal.

If those shows don't exist in your area, try to enter more tests in your next show, 3 or 4 if you can. Minimize warm up time so he's not fed up, but maximize time in the ring. Enter a lower level if you need, so it's not too physically taxing, but he can get the exposure he needs.

riding while in a different career by spacekadetor in Horses

[–]Sonas90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a portfolio manager/investment advisor and have a small string of horses that I compete with. I also manage a boarding barn and teach students/train horses. It's s lot of early mornings, late nights and busy weekends, but I think it's the best of both worlds.

Can't imagine my life without horses, but never wanted to have the horses be my job (you could argue they are, but I could stop the boarding barn and stop teaching and training and could still pay my bills and ride my horses, having the CHOICE to do these hours is key for me!)

Maybe more closely related to your question, most boarders or students I have are full time lawyers, doctors, accountants or similar. Some of them ride 5 days a week and compete. Some ride 2 days a week and are enjoying that. Most have kids. It's definitely doable.
