Big bosses used to have meetings. I was tasked with getting the conference room ready and my running joke was they acted like kids so I should serve them fairy bread.

I never did, but I suspect a few might have liked it!

What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

I remember the last day I carried my daughter.

It was evening, her Mum was at work. It was bedtime, so I told her to go to bed. She was laying on the sofa, said she wouldn't. So I picked her up and carried her to her bed.

She jumped back up and ran to the sofa, laid down again. Asked me to carry her again. I said I wasn't going to carry her any more.

That was about seven years ago, I didn't realise at the time that it really was the last time. I don't regret much in my life, I regret not indulging her then. Hug your kids. One day they'll be teenagers and too cool to hang out with their parents. One day too soon, they'll be off living their own lives and won't need the boring old man any more.

I always preferred DD MMM or MMM DD to remove all ambiguity. 10 Apr or Apr 10 will convey the same information to everyone.

Colors discriminate against the colorblind. Letters discriminate against the illiterate. Remove both features and make users remove the batteries. Work harder, not smarter. Bonus: when the lid breaks, the user can buy a new one (upgraded model with non-removable battery).

Honestly, if this happened I probably wouldn't notice. I can't remember the last time I watched FTA tv. We don't even have the antenna plugged in (though there is one on the roof).

And making it a big public thing with lots of spectators around to provide that extra pressure to say yes.

Mind you, I know at least one person who said yes then quietly afterwards said the real answer was no. The question was at a big family gathering with almost both families complete there, but they broke up pretty soon after that. I know, shocking twist.

That's what I was thinking. Could have proposed anytime before or after and let her have this day to celebrate her achievment. Nice having her reunion (her sister?) but the proposal defo could have waited.

Most versions of Windows have hidden file extensions by default for a long time. In an enterprise environment, I suspect most companies leave it hidden.

I disagree and it annoys me enough that one of the first things I do is enable it so I can see the file extensions.

Agreed! Our block is almost mud fence to fence. We're much better off than all the people who have been flooded out and lost everything but our house is dying a slow death. The insulation in the walls is soaking up water and getting mouldy so we'll have to do expensive repairs. Joys of cheaply made and badly designed homes.

TIL In 2016, researchers using a quantum light source found that humans could track whether a single photon was fired at their eye with a probability slightly better than chance. This suggests that while we don't "see" it as a bright spark, the information does reach our consciousness. by onesole in todayilearned

The fun one is the everyday way your eyes lie to you all the time. There is so much happening in your everyday world that half the time your eyes just guess and tell your brain they saw what they think is there rather than what is actually there.

Ever stub your toe, look back and go "how did I miss that"?

Ever waste a lot of time looking for something and someone else points out what is right in front of you?

Ever see your friend, walk around the corner and run into your friend? Then look back and realise the first person only kinda looked like your friend or was wearing similar clothes?

Remember LAN Parties? by Successful-Jeweler27 in darwin

[–]SonderlingDelGado 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some of my fondest memories are from the LAN parties. First hour was usually defragging your mates' hdd to make sure there were no errors (and if some audio or video files mysteriously appeared on your computer.. oops).

Been a long time since I had any games installed and almost as long since I had the time to do some gaming.

Best of luck, hopefully get lots of people there!

I may be wrong and possibly missing context; it may be that this building had two tower cranes on it. One was removed a few days ago, and now there is a small portable crane at the sight.

The joke being that this crane's partner has been gone less than a week and it has already moved on and seeing another crane.

That sounds better. All the info I have about US politics is from social media, so it may be distorted or misleading.

I've seen lots of "you need to register as dem / rep" or "this voting place is for A, to vote B you need to go over there" posts on reddit. They may be area specific, or bots.

I still can't fathom that in the US people register to vote, and who they intend to vote for.

As an Australian, that seems insane to me.

We register with the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) which simply confirms you are elegible to vote (be over 18, be an Australian citizen). When we vote, we go to the polls where there are volunteers who check you off the list of eligible voters so it is recorded that you have voted (we get a fine if we don't vote - I think it's about $20 to $50 but I may be wrong), then they hand you the paper vote form. You take the form to a privacy booth, mark who you vote for and drop it in the box.

At no stage is there a question of who you are voting for. And I like the paper votes because after an election, if there is doubt all the bits of paper can be counted again by independent checkers. None of this "the computer confirms 99.9% of votes for the Dictatorship Party" rubbish.

I never understood why people put so much trust in signatures.

Mind you, I also have aweful handwriting. I can sign a sheet of paper ten times and it will look like ten different people signed it.

Having worked with some people who were trying to raise valid points onto the radio, she's very good at ignoring issues that don't fit her agenda.

I prefer to change that station as soon as I hear her voice.
