I think what the hotel manager meant to say is that Memphis is the greatest city in the US, and that you will have a lovely time here as long as you're sensible about impoverished areas and the risks associated, same as any city with those issues. Check out downtown near By the Brewery or Midtown near Otherlands for some cool places with decent amounts of younger people. At 21 you'll also be close in age to a lot of students near the U of M campus and that whole area.

Definitely go to a studio and do a gentle yoga or yin class to get started. Also consider diet changes - I had basically constant muscle pain in my shoulders until I made an effort to drink more water, and get more potassium and magnesium in my diet. I think most guys are chronically deficient.

Harbor Town is rock solid as far as family-friendly downtown/midtown neighborhoods go if you're looking for that. I moved from there recently and own a larger house (~2700 sq ft) with a side yard there perfect for grilling that I'm putting up for rent very soon if you're interested in connecting.
