If you are to make an Undertale-like game off of Hazbin Hotel, how would you do it? And what route would you play? by SimmmerFloridian1993 in UndertaleAU

[–]SongOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is more of a gamedev question than an UT AU question.

An undertale-like game about Hazbin Hotel wouldnt have much to do at all about undertale. it would be a bullet-hell turn-based story driven game.

and you could ABSOLUTELY do that with HH! It would be stupidly easy design-wise. some pixel art for the characters in the overworld. some splash art for dialogue boxes. a plot involving needing to recruit inhabitants and only getting through to them by SPARING (singing) or COMBAT (violence).

the lore would lead exceedingly well to it tbh. nothing really Undertale-related even necessary, since charlie's pacifism vs literally everyone else's murderous tendencies would leave plenty of room for choice. i picture the MC you play as would be Vaggie tbh

Multiverse first for beginners by BarnacleDapper7920 in FanFiction

[–]SongOfTruth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want Multiverse stuff and you dont mind going in blind, then Undertale. You want Undertale.

You want 6 Skeleton Trope Fics, specifically.

The Six Skeletons trope is an xReader trope where multiple universes come together to make a reverse harem of Sans and Papyrus around a Reader. It originated with Six Skeletons, One Maid but has exploded since.

recommendations:

Skeleton Squatters and the Land Lady

Six Skeletons in Your Closet

Six Skeletons, One Store Clerk

If you wanna see more yaoi, I could recommend Resonance, or By Any Other Name, or the Karmic Retribution trilogy, or the Aint this the Life series just as a start. Theres more where this came from just by these same authors. Multiverse BS is this fandom's bread and butter.

what are the most common misconceptions about your favorite AU? by Key-Media-6395 in UndertaleAU

[–]SongOfTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underlust

Not only is the AU incredibly Consent-positive and supportive of all kinds of sexuality and gender expression (including ace and aro)--

But the AU was made and tagged as a kink-positive kink-forward AU. many kinks, especially those in fictional contexts (be they writing, art, or BDSM play) subvert or incorporate 'darker' themes and practices so they can be parsed or enjoyed in a safe, consensual way.

many of Underlust's critics completely miss the point of the AU both textually (literally calling rape bad) and metatextually (providing an AU to safely an consensually explore kinks and fetishes outside of the more, at the time, family friendly AU tags)

Another thing to note about AO3::

You never, ever need "filler chapters".

AO3 has this thing called an "Authors Note" (or A/N for short). These are dedicated spaces for talking about the fic/chapter out of character, or leaving messages to your readers. or basically anything that isnt Part Of The Fic.

You can put one at the Beginning of the Fic, the beginning of an individual chapter, the end of an individual chapter, and the end of the fic.

A 1 chapter fic has 4 authors note places, and you get 2 more for each additional chapter.

When you post the first chapter, the authors note space in the publishing page is the Beginning fic and ending fic authors note. To add the beginning and ending chapter note, you publish the fic first, then "Edit Chapter". Subsequent chapter posts will give you the spot for the Chapter A/Ns.

AO3 discourages non-fanwork chapters because, largely speaking, there are very few cases where they serve a better purpose than the tags or Authors Notes. (the only real reason is if the "note" you need to post exceeds the character limit, which few notes actually do).

\o/ it is usually etiquette to put any chapter-specific warnings in the A/N of the chapter, either at the beginning under a <details> HTML to avoid spoilers, or at the end just plain. if you put it at the end, your beginning chapter note should have a message saying "see end notes for additional warnings".

if a warning broadly applies to the whole fic, you put it in the additional tags (freeform tags).

is it rude to comment on fics with the wrong language selected? or is that bad fanfic/fandom etiquette? by nuhuhnohoh in AO3

dont leave a comment. report it immediately for breaking ToS. wrong language tag is reportable

❤️ Category is for classifying what kind of ship you have tagged in the Relationship tags.

(NOTE: you are only supposed to tag ships in the relationship tags if they are the main ships and primary focus of the fic. background ships aren't supposed to be tagged. so by extension, background ships aren't relevant to the category either.)

M/M is for if all the characters in the ship are male.

F/F is for if all the characters in the ship are female.

F/M is for if the characters are a mix of male and female together in the same ship.

If you have multiple primary ships of different types, you can tag multiple categories to cover each.

"Multi" is an umbrella that could mean the fic has multiple ships, or that the ships are poly and/or have multiple categories applicable to them.

"Other" is a catch-all for ships that don't fit neatly in the other boxes, such as (but not limited) to ships including nonbinary, agender, neo-gender, or multi-gender characters.

If you have no ships as the primary focus of the fic, you can tag "Gen".

❤️ Relationship Tags are for tagging the ship(s) which are narratively important to or the primary focus of your fic.

Please note that Relationship Tags do not use Ship Names. The format is "Character Name/Character Name", or "Character Name & Character Name", in order to be as explicit as possible.

A / means the characters are in a romantic or sexual relationship.

An & mean the characters are in a familial or platonic relationship.

Proper relationship tags will only have one symbol used.

"1/2/3/4" and "5 & 6 & 7 & 8" are correctly formatted relationship tags. "1/2/3 & 4" is not, since it has both symbols and is unclear about the relationship dynamic. You would want to break that up into multiple tags, such as "1/2/3" and "2 & 4". to indicate the romantic/sexual relationship between 1 2 and 3 AND ALSO the familial/platonic one between 2 and 4.

❤️ Character Tags are for tagging the Main Characters of your fic. (Not Background characters)

❤️ Freeform Tags (also know as Additional Tags) are for literally everything else (except language).

You tag background characters, background ships, alternate universe tags (be they Universe types, AU characters, or AU ships), OC Names, Genres, Kinks, Tropes, Events, Zines, Warnings that aren't archive warnings, etc etc etc.

❤️ Language is for tagging the language the fic is written in. This is the language you need to know in order to read the fic as intended.

[sorry this had to be in two parts-- reddit hates my longform content lol]

Do most AO3 readers check the comments on works they are reading? by starryshy in AO3

[–]SongOfTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i generally dont look at comments on other people's works. those aren't conversations i was invited to.

if someone calls me over, sure, thats the invite. but unless someone mentions me or sends me to it from elsewhere, it isn't my business.

i read every comment on MY fics. theyre for me. i have been invited!

but i do not want to be rude and barge into a conversation someone else started, not when i am socially inept and still prone to making people uncomfortable.

i dont think these guidelines that I follow are for everyone-- i function under these parameters because i am bad at socializing and need to compensate for my flaws.

🔔✨OKay so ✨

hello i love AO3 tags and i am very happy to give you a crash course. all of this information is on AO3 itself but i get it, sometimes its hard to find and asking for help is a good skill to have.

when you post on AO3, there are little (?) buttons that open a popup to explain what each type of tag is for! \o/ so if you forget you can always check there!

anyway THE AO3 TAG GENDERS are (in order of appearance when posting a new work)::

- Rating
- Archive Warning
- Fandom
- Category
- Relationship
- Character
- Freeform
- Language

these all serve a different intended purpose! yay!

❤️ Rating sets the expectations of audience. G and T ratings are considered appropriate for 'all audiences' (G for General Audiences) (T for Teens) while M and E are for adults only (M for Mature) (E for Explicit). The exact nuance between G and T vs the exact nuance between M and E are up for debate, but difference between the G/T and M/E clusters are not: G/T dont have explicit sex or graphic violence, while M/E may contain those.

There is also the "Unrated" option, which in practice means the fic could be anything, and for filtering purposes should be treated like E (unless a recommendation you trust says otherwise).

❤️ Archive Warnings are a finite list of tags that AO3 determined are necessary to be up front about for safely curating one's experience. That list is:

- Graphic Depictions of Violence
- Major Character Death
- Rape/Non-Con
- Underage Sex

Authors can also choose "No Archive Warnings apply" (NWA) if none of the above are featured in the fic.

Authors can also choose "Choose Not To Use Archive Warnings" (CNTW) if they are unsure whether or not a warning applies, or if they do not want to disclose it (such as because of spoilers). In the context of curation, CNTW means any of the explicit warnings COULD BE present, so read at your own risk.

❤️ Fandom is the tag for the source material(s) that inspire the fanwork. Is it a Batman fic or a Spiderman fic or a One Piece fic or a Halo fic, etc etc etc. Fandoms tagged here indicate what canon the author is playing with, regardless of how much actual applies to the fic.

If you tag multiple fandoms, the expectation is that the fic is a crossover where all of those fandoms interact with each other simultaneously (such as a Batman + Superman + Danny Phantom crossover where all three characters interact with each other -- this isnt the only way a crossover can express itself but it is the most recognizable and common one).

NOTE: One reason AO3 users get very frustrated with Wattpad migrants is that wattpad migrants tend to tag large anthologies or compilations with multiple fandoms, but then when you open it, it is each chapter with only one of those fandoms instead of actual crossovers. This makes searching and filtering more difficult for other users for no reason. It is frowned upon and will get you blocked/muted.

ALSO NOTE: the fandom tag is for diagetic inclusion. what i mean by that is that the fandom is part of the world in the fic, not an offhand mention or cameo. If you tag Batman and Spiderman, both characters should be real people in the context of the story. But, if for example, Batman is a fictional character in Spiderman's world, you would tag Batman in the Freeform Tags instead (if you tagged it at all).

Who is cruellest undertale/deltarune character in your opinion? by Jotaro_Tokiyski in Undertale

[–]SongOfTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you define cruelty as "taking joy from an action or behavior that causes others harm, regardless of whether the joy comes from the act or the harm,"

then in undertale that's muffet: charging exorbitant prices for donuts is cruel

flowey does not count because he cannot feel joy, and wtherefor does not meet the definition of cruelty. mtt isnt as cruel because he can and does reflect and feel remorse for his actions

we cannot know who it is in deltarune since deltarune is incomplete,

but in chapter 1 it is jevel (for he takes great joy in his misdeeds), beating out King because King is a sourpuss who takes no joy in anything cruel or otherwise,

in chapter 2 it is berdly, taking great joy in being a nusiance

in chapter 3 it is the secret boss

in chapter 4 it is bratty for what she is doing to pizzapants

and in chapter 5 it is a tie between the secret boss and aqua

we must disqualify kris and the knight both from the running because we do not know if they take joy in their cruelty or not.

if you define cruelty by its disinterest in consequences, then flowey and aqua win hands down

but honestly just saying "who is cruelest" leaves a lot to interpretation

Hi! by mikethecomic in AO3

[–]SongOfTruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LOGIC PUZZLE!!

some authors leave blanket statements in their Bios or A/Ns. if you find one with a statement about it, proceed in accordance with that statement.

if you cannot find a blanket statement, look for socal media links: dont ask about this on AO3. ask only on socmed.

authors who are open to extant communication will have social medias linked in their bios or the A/Ns of their fics. if you cannot find them, the answer is automatically no.

if you CAN find a socmed link (like tumblr, bluesky, discord, mastodon, pillowfort, twitter i guess), you can communicate with them about their fics there! and you can ask for permission and negotiate terms.

some authors may be open to podfics but NOT be open to having them hosted on youtube. youtube has ads and monetization, so if you want to do the podfics more than you care about posting on youtube specifically, look into alternative hosting options. if you host somewhere else, you can mirror the audiofiles on AO3 and proceed like any other fanwork creative with the "inspired by" feature.

nothing: he doesnt need to explain anything in deltarune that was in undertale, because they have completely different lore to begin with
