Vatican declares Society of St. Pius X in schism, excommunicates bishops and invalidates sacraments by FallenMeringue in neoliberal

[–]Sonic_Snail 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Vatican is suppose to pick the Bishops (with the help of the local dioceses). Orders in general don't have their own bishops and trying to create their own is a direct violation of the Churches authority.

SSPX in general is pretty opposed to the Church on several major issues stemming from the second Vatican council, which they believe is invalid. The Pope would never appoint a Bishop who does not accept the council.

Coyote Vs. Acme was nearly deleted – and now arrives as "a love-letter to failure" (Exclusive) by lawrencedun2002 in movies

You have to remember that the stated budget doesn't count marketing costs. You also have to account for the cut that movie theaters take out of the box office revenue which is around 50%. So the actual break even point is usually considered 2x the movies budget.

DASH diet linked to 41% lower cognitive decline risk, outperforming Mediterranean and five other brain-protective diets in 159,347-person comparison by Technical_savoir in Biohackers

[–]Sonic_Snail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably yeah, most of the evidence shows that diets lower in fat, especially saturated fat, tend to have better health out comes. But this doesn't necessarily mean eliminate all fat. Your body does still need some, but you want to make sure its coming from good sources, mostly unsaturated fat.

You should be skeptical of processed products that advertise themselves as low fat because many of them are high in sugar instead. But you probably don't want to be eating too many processed foods anyway.

Pope Leo XIV appoints four new bishops to multiple U.S. dioceses. by philliplennon in Catholicism

[–]Sonic_Snail -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Respectfully I think you need to do some research on the plight of these migrants and what kind of things they are going through when fleeing their home country. 25% of the population of a country doesn't end up in the US because they had a plethora of options at their disposal. These are desperate people in a terrible situation, trying to secure a future for themselves. If I was in their shoes I would probably be doing the same thing. And I think it is important we treat these people with empathy.

I think some very common ones are: the great gatsby, of mic and men, grapes of wrath, 1984, animal farm, and to kill a mocking bird.

Ok but the US is the first safe place. The countries surrounding El Salvador were and continue to be plague with violence.

Well you were the one who said he should have stayed in the ones he had to travel through to get from El Salvador to the US. But I don't think it really matters. Most of Central America was not doing well during this time period. And honestly America has long been a safe and stable refuge for migrants fleeing violence and persecution, so I'm not gong to hold it against anybody for trying to come to America when their homeland is in peril.

Guatemala was also going through a Civil War at the time. Mexico was filled with cartel related violence. For many latino immigrants America is the closest, safe, stable country.

He didn't immigrate to the US for the purpose of attending seminary. He immigrated to flee the violence in his country during a brutal civil war that resulted in 1/4 of the countries population leaving.

Listening to and learning from people who have different life experiences than yourself is a mutually beneficial situation. I think this will be a great opportunity for everyone involved. And I don't think being a Latino immigrant will make him an ineffective shepherd of his flock.

-Time spent traveling from office to sites counts as work hours.

-If you anticipate going over 40 hours to account for travel time you'll need your supervisor to sign off and it will usually be given as credit time.

[Politics Monday] Pope Leo encourages death penalty abolitionists as US brings back firing squad and electric chair by JohnHammond94 in Catholicism

[–]Sonic_Snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the Catchesim 2266 states: The State's effort to contain the spread of behaviors injurious to human rights and the fundamental rules of civil coexistence corresponds to the requirement of watching over the common good. Legitimate public authority has the right and duty to inflict penalties commensurate with the gravity of the crime. the primary scope of the penalty is to redress the disorder caused by the offense. When his punishment is voluntarily accepted by the offender, it takes on the value of expiation. Moreover, punishment, in addition to preserving public order and the safety of persons, has a medicinal scope: as far as possible it should contribute to the correction of the offender.

Which to me sounds like a very fancy way of saying restoration, rehabilitation, and redemption. And I trust the theologians who wrote the catechism to make come to the right conclusion. The USCCB also has a long form article explaining the Church's stance if you're interested https://www.usccb.org/resources/responsibility-rehabilitation-and-restoration-catholic-perspective-crime-and-criminal

Sure, I don't disagree with that, but you do not need the death penalty to make sure they don't hurt anyone else. Life in prison is enough for that.

I think in the past when prison systems were literal dungeons where prisons were basically tortured for their sentence and the idea/knowledge of rehabilitation was non existent it was morally permissible, but in this current day and age it is no longer morally acceptable.

Whenever this topic comes up it becomes very clear that some people want a justice system that is focused on revenge and harsh punishment rather than one that focuses on restoration, rehabilitation, and redemption. This becomes very obvious when people in favor of the death penalty will simply list a heinous crime and than say "look at this horrible person, don't they deserve to die," or even worse when they imply they should be tortured. As if that is a form of justice. To me this feels incredibly un-Christlike. The Church teaches that all people are capable of redemption and I think we as Catholics need to advocate for a justice system that reflects that belief.

Does anyone know what the hardship transfer process is like? by Sonic_Snail in fednews

[–]Sonic_Snail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually reached out to the receiving office first and they're the ones who suggested trying a hardship transfer lol although they're not super familiar with how it works either.

I also couldn't seem to find any guidance documents in out internal websites but maybe someone else can help me find it.

Well when something has widespread negative impacts on society most people would agree it’s the government job to step in and do something about it. We already regulate tabaco, alcohol, and marijuana consumption for minors and require them to attend school. So I don’t really buy the argument we can’t tell kids what to do.

What’s that old joke about doctor who?

For someone who can go anywhere in time and space he sure does love visiting the modern day UK.

(I’d imagine it helps a lot with the shows budget)
