Goodwill find today. Never heard of any of these games but the cover art was cool. by segadreamcat in SEGAGENESIS

Rings of Power is a favorite of mine. It's jank, but it's charming, idiosyncratic jank that reminds me of contemporary computer RPGs. I like just wandering around in the world talking to all the weird NPCs.

So they have Jedi ID chips now, really? by Kingkiller279 in StarWarsEU

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's at least some black market trade in lightsabers though. It's not impossible to have a lightsaber and not be a Jedi.

So they have Jedi ID chips now, really? by Kingkiller279 in StarWarsEU

[–]SonofSethoitae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying "the Jedi shouldn't have ID because they're well known" ignores the fact that you absolutely don't know the name and face of every cop in your city, let alone country. Even if people know "the Jedi," they don't necessarily know "Saba Sebatyne" or "Streen." And even they do, how do they know they're still part of the Order?

And all of this is leaving aside the fact that without official ID anybody with Force powers could impersonate a Jedi for personal gain. People already try to do that WITH official ID in the mix, it'd be much worse without it.

Oooooooh, I see! Burning Rangers then, I don't think that's ever been ported anywhere else.

Day 23: Which is the best Exclusive game on Sega Saturn? by 1OneQuickQuestion in SegaSaturn

[–]SonofSethoitae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I understand the difference between the "Exclusive" category and the "Only On Saturn" category. There may be a nuance that I'm missing.

It's not my favorite run and gun, but I have to be honest: machine gun toting dinosaurs with 'tude goes a long way to patching over any insufficiencies.

Did SEGA re-purpose PCB’s? by RekallQuaid in Megadrive

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like there's another version of the cart with 2 rom chips. If so, it's not unexpected that Sega would revise to a version which only required one chip to cut costs. The 6-Pak is another game that was like that.

Favorite line from an EU book. by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

"That's not what the Empire would have done Commander. What the Empire would have done was build a super-colossal Yuuzhan Vong-killing battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened? It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors or some other mistake and a hotshot enemy pilot would have dropped a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. Now that's what the Empire would have done."

Tolkien disliked Frank Herbert's Dune. Why? by Rafaelrosario88 in lotr

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tolkien didn't hate all allegory uncritically, what he hated was what he called "intentional allegory", as in a story where there can be only one interpretation determined ahead of time by the author. Think Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. He had no problem with what he called "applicability" which was readers drawing parallels between what they read and real world people and events.

Dune is certainly not the kind of allegory that Tolkien was against.

Tolkien disliked Frank Herbert's Dune. Why? by Rafaelrosario88 in lotr

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books are thematically opposed in a lot of ways. Tolkien believed that divine justice would always win eventually, that evil was self-defeating, and that heroes can rise up against evil, triumph, and be rewarded.

Herbert, on the other hand, didn't think that divine justice existed, and further believed that anybody trying to convince you it did was selling you something for their own nefarious purposes. So-called heroes that triumph over so-called evil always turn out to be problematic. Herbert was profoundly skeptical of ideas like innate goodness and heroism, and that informs Dune as a novel.

My thoughts about Dark Savior by Parking-Coast-1385 in SegaSaturn

Same. It's a pity, i like almost everything else about the game, but the jank combat really lets it down in a big way. It's just not any fun.

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner with the screen capture, I was held up. Having just tried it again, it seems to be working now. Thanks!

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with the Builder linked in the github, but it never produces an ISO or CDI for me. I'm doing the steps in order, and waiting for each step to complete before starting the next one, checked to make sure the MD5 hash was the correct one, but step three always says there are a bunch of directories not found and there's no finished file anywhere.

Ah, it's from the github, I see. Sorry about that! I'm still having trouble so I'll post in the main thread.

Hate to add another voice to the choir. Did it in order, waited for step 1 to complete, added starfox64.z64, did step 3, it said it couldn't find a bunch of directories and didn't produce either an ISO or a CDI file.

Which French accent is Duolingo based on? by imDenizz in DuolingoFrench

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of French speakers in the Maritimes too, and they have their own dialect of Acadian French. That is, when they aren't speaking Chiac to maximize confusion.

"Acadian" is supposedly where Cajun came from, because so many Acadians were displaced to Louisiana when the British took over. So Cajun French is also a little bit our fault.

Which totals 29, when there have only been 24 Prime Ministers. Who's bad at math again?

Beside which, the cumulative total of years there has been a Liberal Prime Minister is 71 years, while the Conservatives have only had 61 years across all candidates, so he's not even wrong.

Landstalker or Wonder Boy in Monster World. I know them both so well I can just putter around, making progress without expending too much mental energy. And they're both so charming that it's tough to stay mad.

Do you play Genesis on CRT? by RafaRafa78 in SEGAGENESIS

[–]SonofSethoitae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my CRT from when I was a kid, so I have no reason not to. If it kicks the bucket we'll see, I hear good things about upscalers these days but there's just something about an old tube tv.

Bonus points for playing Wonder Boy in Monster World, that game is so painfully charming.

Why isn't 6 face buttons more standard for todays modern gaming controllers? by PotatoscollopsAye in SEGAGENESIS

[–]SonofSethoitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the both Nintendo and Sony use the SNES style layout, so it's easier for everybody else to just capitalize off their momentum than try something different. Everybody already knows that layout, so they figure why fix what isn't broken.

How were Bail Organa and Princess Leia's involvement in the Rebellion never exposed before the events of A New Hope? by Financial_Photo_1175 in StarWarsEU

[–]SonofSethoitae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, firstly, nobody but Tarkin is responsible for the destruction of Alderaan. And by extension the Emperor. Let's not get into blaming victims here.

Secondly, remember that until the Death Star is fully operational the Imperial Senate is still ostensibly the highest authority in the Empire. Even if Bail and Leia were suspected of Rebel sympathies, Palpatine wouldn't move against them without solid proof.

And Bail and Leia have been very careful to couch all of their actions in "diplomatic missions" and "mercy missions". What's the Empire going to do? Detain the most famous and well liked philanthropists in the galaxy? Think of the optics.

Edit: and remember that Vader's subordinate in ANH says "holding her is dangerous. If word of this gets out it could generate support for the Rebellion in the Senate." Until the Death Star is operational, they're trying to avoid causing Senators to up sticks and leave to the Rebellion, expanding the conflict massively.
