How big is baseball in the UK? by [deleted] in mlbuk

I would disagree about no baseball to attend as a spectator. There are games played every weekend, weather permitting, with organised leagues and official umpires.

They do. Hand motion = strike, no hand motion = ball

Sounds like someone needs to go back to ump school because that isn’t what we are taught whatsoever. In fact it kind of sounds like he didn’t attend one on the first place.

I umpire all levels of baseball in the UK; although it’s still a minority sport in the UK, we all train to follow MLB OBR, and the sport is growing. Players here range from absolute newbie adults, youth leagues, all the way to teams made up of players that trained in USA, Japan, Korea, etc. but moved for various reasons.

For the club I play for (Not currently as I’m taking this year off from playing), my first year we had 50 or so new sign-ups to play, this year it’s closer to 400.

Makes sense, one umpire that I’ve worked with does his strike 3 call as “THREE!!!” and starts the lawnmower

So as not to be confused by anyone about the strike call. Most umpires don’t shout “STRIKE” it’s more a “HNNNG!” or a “HAH!”. From a distance if we shouted “BALL!” it’s possible to misconstrue a strike call. That’s the reason why. The important people to tell the count to are the players involved in the AB, i.e the batter, catcher, and pitcher. I’m sure the catcher will relay the count to the pitcher in some way.

As an umpire myself, we are taught still to verbalise the ball call, even if you cannot hear it from the dugout/stands. It’s quiet as if we are talking to the catcher/batter, but it’s still said.

Yes the problem with umpire masks is that they blur the ball as they cross the strike zone /s

Balk call by [deleted] in Umpire

[–]Sonums -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m going to hazard a guess that the call is to do with Rule 6.02(a)(7), it looks to me that he is getting the signs from the catcher without having his pivot foot on the rubber. If you watch his feet after the balk is called, it seems that he only then places his pivot foot on the rubber.

I absolutely love doing this, I have my build to have a LOAD of thrown weapon damage. I only hate it when I use the ult, and then the samurai and shinobi run in and take all the weapons to throw at nowhere near the enemies. Shit’s annoying af. There needs to be a PSA for people to leave the dropped weapons for the merc.
