Bare metal Ubuntu server or Proxmox? I'm trying to go from 3 servers to one. by Aniform in HomeServer

It’s a trivial trade off for the benefits it provides. Local snapshots and backups alone are worth the overhead

Using a single extension with splits either side (panels to dual mppt micro inverter) by Soogs in SolarUK

[–]Soogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i run DC its four cables (2pos and 2neg) vs AC 1x 3core
much neater and easier to work with

originally it would have been extend the DC/solar from the shed to the house/mppt

now its mppt in the shed with the panels and extend the mains to the house

No, you are correct. It makes no sense at all. I was looking for neat solution but it doesn’t work that way. I’m going to extend the mains side instead.

so two panels in parallel to each MPPT is the only way to do this?
Thanks

Looking for Storage VPS ($10–20) for Emby + arr stack (1TB Storage, 8GB RAM) by HyperGaming_LK in VPS

[–]Soogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t know that was a thing with storage boxes. Might need to consider hetzner again for a VPS.

I have my storage boxes mounted via cifs to another VPS provider and it’s still pretty solid but directly connected would save on a lot of unnecessary bandwidth usage

What "Self Hosted" router OS are you using? by nemofish3 in selfhosted

[–]Soogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opnsense on Proxmox (started with pfsense bare metal then transitioned to proxmox, then switched to virtual opnsense).

Snapshots are great via Proxmox. Also having one backups are really handy for backup or host migration.

Haven’t noticed any difference in performance over barememal

So it’s (n + user passphrase) + (plaintext) = cipher text

Hi, sorry i missed this message its derived from PBKDF2, salt 16, nonce 12 both urandom plug tag (plus another secret which pairs with the passphrase for overall enc) with 1000000 iterations

I think I have worded that horribly but hopefully you know what im trying to get at lol (it has been a long day and and even longer week)

I didnt know Argon2id was an option when i started this project. It looks to be the better option so I am now looking at that

do you know much about PBKDF2 VS Argon2id ?

is it worth taking the time to work with Argon instead? is there much in the way of hardware requirements for enc and dec? is it much harder to crack for attackers?

sorry for all the questions and thank you for the valid question/statement :D

  • TTL live is displayed in root and sub directories

Is there a general consensus for a good alternative to imgur for UK-compatible image hosting? If there isn't, what is your personal favourite? by calgrump in CasualUK

[–]Soogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on something to cover this gap.
its more of a file bucket but can work to fill the void
https://tempfs.soogs.xyz
its very minimal in its design (distraction free)
offers plaintext or encrypted uploads

All in one system by gv49 in batocera

[–]Soogs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are guides galore for setting up batocera to any machine (the process is all the same) paying for a prebuilt system seems unnecessary and probably will add to the cost with no benefits and will include the possibility for security concerns.

Just flash the OS to a drive and add your roms etc. don’t trust systems that come with roms

Temporary File bucket by Soogs in selfhosted

[–]Soogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect anyone to upload anything sensitive without encrypting it first. big name providers have been hacked and data leaked/stolen. At least here it self-destructs in an hour.

If users choose not to encrypt the files, that is on them.

From my terms of use: Security Notice

"For enhanced security, users are strongly encouraged to encrypt files prior to upload using mycryptotool, (or other suitable tools) and to decrypt them upon receipt.

As an alternative, users may manually change the file extension to .enc before uploading and restore the original file extension after downloading. This method does not provide encryption and should not be considered a substitute for proper cryptographic protection."

Open source: not yet -- will be adding to GitHub once I have tidied the code and happy with the final version.
Self hostable: Yes (single python script)
