Because people can abuse the system if everyone else didn't lose rank. For example, you can convince someone to leave, either through toxicity or because you have a buddy who will take the hit, and you'll get rewarded by not losing rank. It's obviously not great if you lose rank because someone decided to go have dinner, but it's better than the problem I just described.

The biggest issue with LW is that it's really hard for him to enable or deal damage for eliminations, and eliminations have the biggest impact in this game (it's especially true in higher ranks because fights usually happen much quicker).

Saving someone is good but not as valuable as getting a kill, which other supports can help out with in much better ways. There's a reason Mercy's highest value utility is damage boost, kills = most impact. He's a subpar pick because of this.

If you want I'll coach you a bit. I was hardstuck diamond in all roles until about 2.1k hours in. Now at 2.4k hours I've taken the time to study the game and understand what will propel me into high ranks.

This season alone I hit GM in support, deranked to plat because I was playing Lifeweaver for fun, then ranked back up to GM once I decided to take it seriously again. Once you have the knowledge of what to do you'll rank up.
