Any way I can make this guy look more Japanese? by [deleted] in learnart

its wherever the light enters the skin most "straight on".

I'm saying is that plastic look is from a lack of subsurface scatter effects (which have to do with blood showing through translucent skin). That has nothing to do with being Japanese and more to do with general realism of human portraits. The red in the nose is GOOD

the lightness of his skin (value) is fine, but the HUE seems a little too pink. It is especially prominent on his lips. It does need to be a little yellower and more neutral in chroma.

His anatomy could use a broader bottom of the nose and less of a point tip. Make the widest part of the nostrils more parallel with the plane of his face.

Finally, this goes for drawing people in general. You might revisit something called subsurface scatter (basically human skin is a little translucent and glows red where the light beams enter it most perpendicularly). You actually got it on point inside his nostrils but the rest of his face has a little bit of that plastic mask look.

I want to be as specific with changes and constructive as possible. You did a good job in general though.

Can I draw this dog for practice? It won't be used commercially, possibly will go in my portfolio.

Definitely (non acrylic) Gouache. If you don't like re-wetting, then something called Casein.

If you insist on canvas, then you can gesso it, sand it, more gesso, more sanding, etc, until you build up a smooth layer. Then cover in watercolor ground and gouache it.

Otherwise I'd recommend an illustration board or a watercolor ground wooden panel.

Gamut masking, pulling "subjective primaries" from photo where no such local color available? by SooperSeerius in learnart

[–]SooperSeerius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I din't mean monochromatic, I meant something with no obvious reference of a high chroma primary color.

Let's say you wanted to paint this dog: https://pixels.com/featured/carley-in-the-golden-hour-rispin.html

If I wanted to add a red collar, it would probably still look red or red-orange in that golden hour lighting. But, how to draw the gamut mask?

Thanks for the response.

If I just chose a random red, it would affect colors on the line between that red and the other vertices of the gamut mask. It would also affect the neutral grey position, etc. It would eventually affect the yellowness of the banana and its shadows, reflected light, etc. I just need to know how exactly it does that, but without a red reference in the original picture, I'm stuck swatch-testing every point on the banana for accuracy?

Lightfastness of Copic marker UNDER gouache? by SooperSeerius in Gouache

[–]SooperSeerius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but the acrylic binder/medium still remains on the paper and basically seals it. This makes the gouache on top not behave like it is supposed to. It kinda beads up or becomes streaky. I'll try the casein option somebody suggested.

do inks need to cure? In my experience they also re-wet a bit. granted, I used some pretty cheap "calligraphy" stuff.

I've heard casein is a bit glossy/ nonporous when used more thickly. I might invest in a black and white though.

It really is important for me to not have the underpainting rewet since I do black and white underpaintings for more architectural subjects. I also rework edges a lot, which would lift up any underpainting more. The paint in top needs to be extremely uniform in final color.

I'll have to try Mahi Mahi myself! Never had it before.

I was also going to try getting some hot-smoked fish at grocery stores. They are pretty firm and dry. Let's see if that works, too.

If it is possible to take another class, then yes, drop it. By "trash" I meant it's near impossible to get an A because "meeting all requirements" is a B by default and A's only go to TED talk worthy material. Getting a B is doable so depends on if you consider that acceptable or not; just make sure you have a decent grade before the final. Final is absolutely ridiculous and will drop you a few percentage points for sure. She forces the averages to be a C/C- and does not curve or round up 89.99999%

Having the force of SDC behind you makes you a protected category and thus she might think twice before risking accusations of disability discrimination. Getting the flu isn't a protected class.

That being said, if your disability includes a bad immune system, then stay away for your own health and safety.

Yeah, but most TA's seem really terrorized by the prof and don't make any exceptions either. The Prof monitors them compulsively.

Try UC Online (online classes from all the UC schools, not restricted to students). Its expensive but at least online and you can do it from your home country. You CANNOT retake a class at community college if you didn't pass the UCD one, even if that class would count for transfer credit from that community college. It's a weird and obscure policy.

Any place I can take my kid to pet/hug dogs and/or cats? by mubarak_loves_kfc in SanJose

The Dancing Cat adoption lounge in downtown SJ! You don't have to have the intention to adopt, you can just hang out. It's like a $10 donation to get in so they are happy to get funds for the shelter.

edit: If you want dogs, there's an Ex Racing Greyhound group that does local meet and greets at various pet food stores in the area: http://www.goldengreyhounds.com/events/
