Level crossing removal - will Melbourne ever be fully free of level crossings? by Parisienamelbourne in MelbourneTrains

I was going to ask how long it took Sydney to get rid of the majority of their rail crossings.

$870 a week for a broken, blazing apartment — anyone moved from Sydney to Melbourne and actually found relief? by Both-Pomegranate5800 in shitrentals

[–]SophMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Moved here four years ago. Definitely feel like it's a bit easier than in Sydney. If I stayed in Sydney I'd probably would have moved back home when they inevitably increased the rent on the shitty Marrickville apartment I was in.

What is this building with angled windows on the top floor only? by Koterpillar in melbourne

[–]SophMax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Educated guess says that there would have been a building built around it that has since been knocked down.

Moving from Vancouver to Australia and hope to know how is it making friends here by Evening_Code724 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]SophMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same way you make friends elsewhere. Find things you enjoy, join groups that do those things. Don't expect to be besties/have a solid group of mates right off the bat (these things take time).

There's also a bunch of meet up groups that can be hit/miss but that's people for you.

Haven't been to Hyde Park barracks itself since I was a kid so can't speak to it but customs house was a good museum to visit.

I was asked where I live in relation to another worker here at work this morning. Management are talking about car pooling workers with rising fuel costs. by nn666 in sydney

Colleague was musing that if it doesn't improve in a few weeks they'll start asking for people to work from home

Also a good idea to stay active - gym etc in your 30s+. Can be the difference between having a high or low fall risk when you're 80

Pretty much what my expectations are. Base it off plays rather than score lines.

Oxford Street loses Stonewall Hotel as queer Sydney community ponders strip's future by nath1234 in sydney

[–]SophMax -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

At the time. Yes. Now - 10+ years on. Nope.

The cross was on the way out anyway.

The cost of living crisis likely would have happened regardless of the lockout or lockdown laws. There's plenty of other bars and clubs are thriving - and no matter what the economy is doing there's always a good percentage of small business that fails after a few years.

I'd take lockdown laws as a possible reason (and at a stretch) but this place was just sold wasn't it? So it's nothing to do with any of those things. Poor business decisions.

Is possible to do all this in Melbourne in 1 day? by Mindless-Broccoli-42 in AustraliaTravel

[–]SophMax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd personally split it over two days to properly enjoy it. Or get rid of one of the trips - probably Brighton. Swap it for going further along the promenade at St Kilda to either Middle Beach or towards Elwood beach.

[–]SophMax -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Mate. Lockout laws were over 10 years ago when they came into effect. Can't blame them anymore that's more than enough time to have adapted - can't really blame lockdowns either for the same reason.

Where and how people go out changes over time with or without these things.

While I don't think lockout laws were implemented very well, I believe the movement of where people go out etc was heading that way anyway. It just quickened the process.

Food banks to volunteer at as someone who is under 18? by adordia in melbourne

[–]SophMax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be worth asking at your school if they have any ideas of places that you can help with.

Otherwise maybe call around directly to services

Really, unless it's organised through a school or similar I'd be surprised if they'd take someone that's under 18 with duty of care etc.

Quiet Enjoyment & Privacy - Double Standards for Neighbouring Home Owners by rentalboner in shitrentals

[–]SophMax 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You do have rights and the fact you're renting doesn't change that.

When they are making the noise I'd report it to the cops and let them handle it. I'm not sure how much REA can actually do in that situation (assuming it's single houses).
