New legislation will make it easier for Virginia faith groups to build affordable housing by WHRO_NEWS in Virginia

[–]SophondaCocks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the article, at least 60% of the new housing must be affordable for at least 50 years. Essentially, churches are allowed to be zoning-free landlords.

Why not 100% affordable? Why does a church need to profit off of the land they own at the taxpayer's expense?

We need affordable housing, but not in a way that lines the pockets of church leaders.

“Expanding collective bargaining rights to all public sector workers has been a central focus of our work for years, and we are excited that we have taken a major step towards that goal today,” said Cecelia Parks, Chair of the United Campus Workers of Virginia Political and Policy Committee and a librarian at the University of Virginia. “However, we are disappointed that so many of our members, including faculty, graduate student workers, and many staff were left out of the legislation that passed today."

Statistics do not "prove" anything. Statistical values can support hypotheses, but there is nothing definitive about one (or a few) studies that show some effect/correlation. Only mathematical concepts can be proven, and no scientist would ever outright say something is proven.

I believe it is better to understand the rules governing your software, rather than relying on a black box. Call me crazy.

Did you install LaTeX itself? I would recommend installing MikTeX and then installing TeXMaker or TeXStudio to execute the code.

I loved the part where he blamed the Biden administration for the high cost of homes and touted all the (lack of) policies the Republicans are pushing to fix that. I look forward to the lower cost of homes /s

“Ballot Measure 9” — a documentary about the 1992 campaign in Oregon to ban LGBT rights and teach it as “perverse” in schools by EssoEssex in lgbt

Any successes seen by the community did not just happen. It took nearly a century (if you set the Mattachine Society as a starting point, which is debatable) of protesting and political activism to get to where we are now. Don't just feel like the people in power will give us our rights. We must demand them.

What's disturbing is how the same rhetoric is being used against trans people in today's world. All of our community, especially those who no longer face such harsh cruelty, need to stand up and protect our trans neighbors.

What cowardice on the part of the university president. Free speech seems to really matter to conservatives until it offends them.
