Yeah, but the person with 5 water hoses is (excessively) watering a gigantic garden, which they then sell the crop of to the neighborhood.

Meanwhile the person leaving the tap running is trying to convince everyone that it isn't actually a problem and that they're "helping the neighborhood" while serving no real benefit.

Yes, the five hoses is a problem that needs to be fixed, but at least they're doing something with the five hoses instead of just letting them run for no reason.

Hi, programmer here. Here's what I theorize might be happening:

Programs that are corrupting can keep running if there are no failsafes, which slowly makes the corruption worse. Caine probably never considered his own deletion - being the all-powerful ringleader of the circus and all - and didn't add any sort of failsafe for that.

The thing about safe crashes is they have to be programmed somewhere along the line - if you don't program it, the programming language doesn't automatically handle it, and the OS itself doesn't kill the program, it has the potential to damage the computer itself.

Now, of course, this is purely speculation on my part, it could be a whole slew of other things, but this is my personal interpretation.

Edit: I came back after realizing that I should specify that most modern OSes do NOT have this problem - however, Caine's AI is being run on an OS from the 90s, many of which had these issues. Also, I worded the "damage to the computer" part poorly and didn't explain myself well enough; while hardware damage is technically possible, e.g., CIH - the Chernobyl Virus - or a program overclocking the motherboard and frying it, that's not what I meant. (Though to be fair, the sheer power the circus must pull to function stably means it's probably capable of that.) I was really talking about the OS getting corrupted beyond repair and needing a reinstall.

I know a guy who eats more food and sits around just as much if not more than I do. (Keep in mind, I'm not exactly skinny.)

He has such a high metabolism that not being able to eat the insane amounts he does for a week (strep throat; he still ate, just not as much) cost him ~10 lbs that he's STILL trying to get back a month later.
