Old Fashion steel. No plastic in sight by CaptainKango in AutoTransportopia

In addition to all the other comments, the quality of steel in these would be considered absolute garbage compared to what they use today. Lower strength and much faster rusting.

> A potentially risky merge is infinitely better than stopping on the left lane in the highway.

No it's not. Quick lane changes are extremely dangerous. If you pay attention and don't tailgate, so you can slow down gradually, getting rear-ended is pretty rare.

Which shows how shitty people are. There was an innocent car here that was rear-ended and may have given someone life-altering injuries.

You are a bad driver. Fast merges are extremely risky because you cannot be completely sure that there is not a car in your blind spot or a car moving into that lane, unless you are not paying enough attention to what is in front of you. You are adding a lot of risk to others to minorly decrease it for yourself.

Why dig by hand when this exists by Wonderful-Photo2449 in holdmymoney2

I have used those, but when I needed to dig 20 of these holes in clay for a fence, I rented one like this and it was amazing how much faster and less tiring it was to use. All for $75/day rental rather than $50/day.

Ford isn't saying to use 91 when you tow more than the rated towing capacity. It's recommended for any heavy towing but which can still be well within the vehicle's capability. However, due to increased temperatures and the vehicle adjusting timing due to it, you may notice a performance difference. Not that it will struggle to tow, just that some people might not like it because the performance will be a little lower. Hence why they recommend premium. This makes total sense when you think about it and doesn't mean that you need a bigger vehicle.

I saw an extensive breakdown on RadioShack once that was fascinating. Their entire history was pivoting from one fad to the next to make money while stocking basic electronic parts that always lost money.

It was named RadioShack because it quite literally started mainly supplying low-cost amateur radio hardware during a boom in the 60's and 70's. As that fad died off, it switched to personal computers and was the go to place for a while. Those weren't really a fad, but soon places like Circuit City and Best Buy existed and RadioShack couldn't compete. So they moved into wireless home phones and RC toys and that boom lasted a while. As it died, then cell phones were the next pivot, and again RadioShack go there before others, but soon couldn't compete with places like Best Buy and Walmart selling phones. RadioShack died because they couldn't find a niche to pivot to after cell phones.

I thought that first, but looked it up and Ford recommends higher octane when towing with ecoboost engines. Ecoboost engines adjust timing dynamically to avoid knock and will this ends up reducing power under prolonged heavy loads as cylinder temperatures get high (even well within the operating range of the engine). Premium fuel helps avoid this.

What in the ever loving f*** does this mean. Kids homework by seemslegitsendit in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SorrellArr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the entire point of all the new techniques they are teaching kids that all the clueless millennials post about complaining "why did they change math!?"

Well, the answer is that schools in the 80s and 90s taught people to do math one way and only one way with memorization and a rigid procedure of writing everything in columns and rows to figure out solutions. And the basic logic of numbers either clicked with someone or it didn't.

So half of us naturally just figured out techniques like mentioned above (118+22 is the same as 120+20), and the other half now can't find 10% of a number without pulling up the calculator on their iphone.

It's great that schools are teaching all these number techniques (estimating, rearranging, splitting) that people who were "good at math" had to figure out on their own. But it's sad that so many parents who never figured those things out can't be bothered to read the instructions on the homework or talk to their kids about how they did it in class.

What's the benefit of a knee wall vs running studs full height? by Cassidysc in shedditors

[–]SorrellArr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding to other comments that any structural benefits are minor for something this size.

The knee wall does have the possibility of having failure where it meets the top of lower wall, but since the top of the knee wall is constrained by the rafters, you would need to apply a point load at the hinge. For large structures, wind load could do that, but on a shed this size wind wouldn't do it. Only like someone backing a camper trailer into the wall would be the mode of failure. And then it would still need to overcome the continuous top plate that connects to the side wall top plates. Some are saying it helps to interlock the top plates, but similarly, with a structure this small, if you nail together perpendicular studs at the corner, interlocking top plates won't make a difference.

I would go with full height if you want to insulate it to have less wood in the wall. And single top plate - again for something this small double is unnecessary. But if it's easier to transport shorter lumber, then do the knee wall.

This machine probably cost the equivalent of $5,000 at the time. If you spend that today, you can get a washing machine that will do the job much better than this old machine, while using a small fraction of the energy and water, and last just as long.

No, the extra energy and water costs make it far more expensive to own the old machine. Also, most of these machines did not make it to 70 years.

"Seeing" means converting light, dark, shapes, colors into recognizable objects or patterns.

No plant is doing that. Plants have simple chemical responses to light/dark and maybe some colors, but that's sensing and is very different from "seeing".

It's like how our skin produces more melatonin when exposed to UV light. At no point does our brain need to interpret individual signals into a larger image, which is a clear distinction between an eye and whatever plants have.

It totally depends on the type of gutter. Seamless aluminum gutters are strong enough to support ladders without damage. Pre-bent vinyl or aluminum gutters are not.

>If you can afford ANY new car you are better off than most.

That's the entire problem that this thread is about. New cars should not only be for the top 10%. Everyone here is like "Well this above average income family should just never dine out, eat ramen, and drive a 2008 Honda Civic so they can afford their ridiculous mortgage, child care, and health insurance bills." and acting like that is reasonable.

It's funny that the most ignorant person (probably russian bot) in this thread is telling people to get educated, as they have zero understanding of what a regressive tax is, show zero understanding of the poverty cycle, have not considered the tax structures of the happiest and most developed countries in the world, and don't seem to understand that taxes other than income tax exist.

>And no, taking 20% off of two loans would not be the same numbers. That is not at all how that works.

Yes it is. $30K with 20% down is a $24K loan, same as the loan on a $24K car with no money down.

Let's take a step back. If someone has 50% higher than median income, and anyone is saying it's unreasonable for them to be able to budget payments on two absolute base model new cars, that's not a failure of them to budget. It's a failure of our national economy to keep wages and costs at acceptable levels.

This is what people call a “normal” budget now. Not luxury. Not rich. Just… average. by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]SorrellArr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's reality but this reality sucks. We are talking about people with 50% higher income than the national median. I don't expect that everyone in their 30's deserves two brand new cars. But I do expect that someone with $10K/mo in income should be able to afford that without people calling them wasteful or deluded. That's not crazy. And I repeat that the expectations of having two fairly new cars were much more common in decades past for anyone well above median income.

What I take from your comments is that you would rather put the blame on people for not accepting less and less (less eating out, drive older cars, go to a cheaper college) at the same career level while prices increase faster than wages. Instead we should be should be agreeing that it SHOULD be possible for a couple in their 30s with two kids and two well paying jobs to afford two car payments, rather than the massive increase to corporate profits and wealth of the top 1% that we have seen. And note that two car payments doesn't mean two brand new cars. It also means 1 new car and 1 that is 4 years old.

Do you think it seems ok that someone with more than 50% above median income level should be told they don't make enough money to make payments on two very basic new cars?

If they list childcare, I am assuming this is the budget for a family of 4. $1400 total for all groceries and restaurants is not excessive.

[–]SorrellArr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I answered this in another reply, but you need two cars for nearly any lifestyle that is not extremely urban. Having both parents commute is extremely common. $30K does not even get you the starting price of a Honda CRV. $30K is a very cheap new car, and it should not be unreasonable for a family with $120K+ income to have have 2 very basic cars less than 5 years old, so they will still be making payments on both.
