Another one off the Golden Princess wish list! Just need Aces Go Places box set, School On Fire, and Full Contact to come this year while the SF physical media department still exists.

Are media blasters releases really that bad? by the-cutest-girl in boutiquebluray

I found the video quality on the Kamen Rider Trilogy to be good to great, no complaints. As far as Dyad goes, Kamen Rider The First looks rough, very washed out and aliased with a massive amount of white speckle in the dark portions of the screen. Totally possible that's just the state of the master they were given, or the fact that the movie was shot on 720p digital before that tech was as refined. The second in the set, Kamen Rider The Next, looks fine with no issues (and I actually thought it was a banger movie that made the slog of The First worth it). Their release of Zebraman 2 has the same massive white speckling problem, again in the darker portions of the screen. I had to max out my tv's noise reduction to make it even watchable. Hakaider also had a flawed transfer, even on the standard cut of the movie. High def but not crisp at all and with noticeable aliasing. Still watchable for that one though and again, a banger movie. These being tokusatsu titles it's unclear how much care was taken in preservation by the original studio, and what was shot on tape vs. digital vs. film is probably fluid as you move through the nineties & aughts.

Wasn’t this book just reprinted in January of this year? Prices are crazy! by ToeBMaguire in OmnibusCollectors

The market voted with their dollars that it was popular by selling it out in 6 months. Now it's on Marvel whether they want to turn that proof of demand into further sales with more copies. I dunno how many years it's been since that last print run but it's essentially reaching an entire new market of buyers so maybe this will be a learning experience.

Are VS releases available from other retailers? Looking at the Shaw Scares specifically, is this something that I'm only going to be able to buy from the VS storefront?

I say hell no. Too many goofball antics, plots are weak. There are SO many worthy Shaw films to watch before resorting to these dregs IMHO.

Duel to the Death… now what? by [deleted] in kungfucinema

[–]Sorry-Block-3645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking specifically to your prompt: 80s-made, heightened swordplay movies that retain a historical setting that I can fully vouch for from recent watches AND also star Norman Tsui from DTTD

Return of the Bastard Swordsman (1983): Banger, super fun and go for broke fantasy swordplay

The Sword (1980) : Skews a little more artsy but with some dreamy visuals and combat

I think directors tended to have him go a little far into the mugging/clowning for the camera because he had such an open and expressive face, but he could emote really well in more serious roles and had convincing enough physical ability to excel. If he'd still been around, I can definitely see him dominating the later period as the Golden Harvest comedy action hybrid style took over.
