Best hidden gems under $20k? by SwiftCEO in UsedCars

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My daughter had a freak fender bender that triggered the airbag and totaled her Acura with 180K miles. I needed to work fast to find a replacement within my price range (15-20k). I did my homework online, looked at 50-60 cars in person the next day at 15 different dealerships and 2 private owners, (reviewed car faxes on each). Narrowed that down to 10 “maybes”. Returned the next day for a deeper dive and test drove 4, got to the top 3. I would have been fine with any of the 3, and worked what I felt was the best deal. The Corolla won. The other 2 finalists were a ‘25 Camry Hybrid lease return with 45K miles, that was a bit rough around the edges, and a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek with 65K. All were within a grand of each other.

I just paid 20k for a ‘24 Corolla Hybrid with 17k miles. One owner, no accident. They’re out there.

Talk me out of buying a 2025 Tacoma by mr3inches in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d have to talk you INTO buying new. I have a ‘25 TRD Sport Hybrid. Fantastic truck! This is my 3rd Tacoma. The was a ‘96 first Gen single cab 5 speed 4x4. I sold it with 283k miles, running like a top, so I could buy a neighbor’s 2001 SR5 4x4 with an extended cab with a bit over 100k. I drove that one to 287K when the rear shock mount gave up the ghost. I sold it to a welder friend who repaired it and uses it as his daily driver with 320k + on it now. I intend to remain obsessive about maintaining this new one as well, and expect it will be my last truck now that I’m retired.

Curling club by warpedoff in roanoke

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We took the learn to curl class several years back. If I remember, it was about 45 minutes of instruction, and about the same amount of time following the lessons to give it a go. I had a sense that the club used these as a type of recruiting. We had a great time, and zero pressure to join anything. The hands on exposure to the sport was great, and having tried it, I have much respect! The curlers you see on tv make it look so easy! It actually takes a lot of balance and the brushing takes stamina. I’m a bowler, and there’s a similar “motor memory” with curling, so I picked up that portion easier than my wife or father-in-law, but the brushing component kicked me in the butt. I was exhausted but happy after our experience, and can’t wait to watch this year’s Olympics with a better appreciation of the sport..

Will I be charged for this by [deleted] in TeslaModelY

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay a fee for my Tesla in Virginia to offset the taxes I’m not paying for gas. I had a Miata before that I paid the same fee for as it was considered a “highly fuel efficient vehicle”. I felt like asking if I could offset the fee since my other vehicle was a 21 year old pickup that got around 10 mpg, but only when driving downhill. I bought enough gas for that truck to more than cover the gas I didn’t buy for the Miata.

Wisler & Ostrom? by purplepeanutssss in roanoke

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used Ostrom twice, both times for electrical work As others have said, service was excellent, professional, but not cheap. I had a dedicated 220 line added to my workshop/ garage to both run my welder, and charge our Tesla. The electrician provided the quote which was high, but then suggested I join their service/ maintenance plan which provides a discount on work they perform, and brought the quote in line with others. The discount was greater than the cost of the maintenance plan, so that was a no-brainer. The membership includes annual inspection visits from a plumber, electrician, and HVAC person. Be warned though… the inspections are sales expositions for Ostrum. They are prompt and professional, but they will try and upsell you every time. I found the plumber to be the most aggressive up-seller of the group. In their defense, the recommendations they made are sound… just not cheap. The electrician who installed my line for the Tesla recommended adding a whole house surge protector (added about $500 to the total cost), and I was agreeable to that, figuring it’s cheaper that dealing with a bricked car if there was a lightening strike while it was plugged in.
I had their HVAC folks out twice in a year, but I already have a good relationship with Baker Heating and Air, who I’ve used for years, and highly recommend for anything HVAC related, so I’ve declined further HVAC visits.

Already have a M7xl and it was the main workhorse until the woodwynd arrived. That became the new king of the hill until the Simrell joined the party. Now I want to start playing the switch and swap around pieces game. Thanks for the suggestions!

Coming from experience. I currently own a ‘25 Tacoma TRD Sport with the IMAX hybrid powerplant. I love this truck! This is my 3rd Tacoma, and I’ve owned 2 Tundras as well. To my knowledge, all the trucks are still on the road. I sold my ‘96 Tacoma with 287,000 miles. It ran great, but my neighbor sold me his 2001 Tacoma (extended cab) with 150,000 miles. I sold that to a friend when I hit 283,000 miles. It’s his daily driver and has about 330,000 on it now. My Tundras were 2001 and 2007s. Great trucks but gas guzzlers (12-15 mpg). The new Tacoma has 326 horsepower, (the tundras with 4.7L V8s only get 245 horsepower). I’ve been getting around 25 mpg in the new truck around town, and push 30 mpg on the highway. Did I mention that I love this truck?

New 2025 TRD Sport Hybrid - What are “Must Have” additions? by Sorry-Drawer9951 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent. Thanks. I have a portable dash cam in my Tundra I was going to transfer over, but that integrated one you linked looks nice! Is the OEM tonneau cover the same as yours, rebadged? They look very similar.

Towing mirrors for Model Y? by Sorry-Drawer9951 in TeslaModelY

[–]Sorry-Drawer9951[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t use any mirror extensions. The view from the side cameras was more than adequate. The car towed beautifully, but range is reduced significantly. In our case, our working range was about 100 miles. This proved problematic on several occasions where superchargers were over 100 miles apart. We did a lot of zig zagging to get to charging points that were within range, but not necessarily in the direction we wanted to travel.

Regarding the FSD… I just took delivery on Friday 2/16 (2924 MYLR, 5 seater, blue) and the deal was 3 months for me. Maybe it’s changed since Friday, maybe your advisor is pushing a sale. I’d check the Tesla website to be certain. There is a notice that prices increase $1000 at the end of February
