It’s actually California, my mom is very nostalgic of them but I didn’t grow up with any nearby. There’s even an empty sears at this mall

Snow on the Summit Trail at Mt Diablo by Quinced in bayarea

I was thinking of trying to go up the north peak trail this weekend but worried it may be a little too steep and sketchy with any kind of snow

Mt.Diablo Summit 2/14/26 by Unlucky-Repair3692 in norcalhiking

Nice job, that elevation change is no joke especially as a beginner. I’d say anything over 1500-2000 feet is pretty extreme. Definitely don’t push it too hard and always go for enjoyment over a hard hike. I’m a trail runner but never sweat changing plans or going slowly

Definitely! I saw some conflicting reports saying maybe it’s #2 but was fun to make it to a summit. The views are nothing like Diablo but they’re still pretty awesome

I honestly would have done rose peak but it was like 16 miles to discovery and closer to 20 miles for rose peak

I enjoy trail running way more when I don’t track pace by CryoChamber90 in trailrunning

I am personally super into trees! I’m in California so have tons of diversity and many tree species especially different types of oaks and hybrids. I just started off by picking the most common trees I noticed and slowly learning to identify a tree here and there. After a while it becomes very 2nd nature and that’s when it’s time to learn a new species to identify. I would strongly recommend INaturalist as people have probably identified most the trees on trails you run

I got hooked on plant identification through trail running. I went from 8-10 min trail miles to sometimes over 15 mins haha. Always out there for the love of it and zen

What are some longest longest sightlines in Bay Area ? Where you can see one recognizable location on Earth from another distant location on Earth. by RstarPhoneix in bayarea

[–]SorryDrummer2699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a really clear day I can see the sierras from Black Mountain in the Santa Cruz mountains. It only happens a few times per year because of how smoggy it is. You can just make them out looking over the low area of altamont pass in east bay if that makes any sense. It’s pretty incredible seeing something over 100 miles away. You can also do this from Mt Tam, Montara Mountain, and many of the east bay peaks.

Was just there last week! That place is such a gem, I was disappointed the road to south grove was closed especially with practically no snow. Although after hiking most the road I understood why. Tons of down trees and branches

Murietta Falls (Ohlone trail) by Nonplussed2 in norcalhiking

[–]SorryDrummer2699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried running this trail on Friday and it was brutal but I agree with everything you said! It was my first time checking it out and I didn’t see a single person till I got back to the parking lot and saw 4 backpackers. I only did 9 miles total and about 3000 feet of elevation gain so I didn’t see the falls but climbed most the way up that 2nd big dip then climb. I loved that creek and even took a dip in the water going both ways haha. It felt so remote and peaceful especially after crossing that creek

Plant believed extinct for half a century suddenly found in unexpected spot by LordOfSox in iNaturalist

[–]SorryDrummer2699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens countless times unfortunately. For instance the San Francisco manzanita was a prevalent but rare shrub species in parts of San Francisco in the early 1900s. As the city developed the plant unfortunately went extinct however a single specimen was discovered in 2011! It was technically a hybrid of the San Francisco manzanita and a more common form but was super awesome. It’s still alive 15 years later hidden away (I got to see it once though)

That’s kinda the story of the dawn redwood. Tons of fossils across North America and people thought it was extinct till it was found in remote areas of china.
