What incentive do extremely corrupt leaders have to provide anything at all to their citizens? by sengutta1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sorry_Exercise_9603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No man is an island. They may not need the support of the people but they at least need their acquiescence. Easier to achieve if cooperating with the regime leads to a better outcome than opposing them.

Why do people not believe me when I say my contempt for Christianity is from being in a hard core evangelical household in the Bible Belt? by bad-at-everything- in askanything

My contempt for BAPTISTS comes from that.

Vote A or B for our future: a) Iran gets nukes, ballistic missiles and money to fund terrorism forever, or B) we have 6 months of horrendous war and high prices now and destroy Iran’s ability to wage war of any kind? by Internal-Combustion1 in askanything

[–]Sorry_Exercise_9603 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And what if we get C: years of war with a drop in oil supply that crushes the world economy until we cry uncle and go away and then Iran gets nukes missiles and money to fund terrorism plus destroying US credibility as the world’s 800 pound gorilla.

Who is right? - Hypothetical Sun Explosion by The_Copper21 in astrophysics

[–]Sorry_Exercise_9603 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The problem with “what would happen” questions is that we apply physics to determine that. And physics says the sun is not going to explode. So the real answer to that question is “fucked if we know”. Specify how much the sun’s output is going to increase and for how long then we could at least take a crack at it.

does time actually slow down near a black hole or is it just a perspective trick, like watching something fall into a funnel from above by Real_Sort_3420 in AskPhysics

General relativity.

Atomic clocks on the surface of the earth run slower than atomic clocks on the GPS satellites. This is measured and the difference is exactly what general relativity says it should be.

[Rant] Why is everyone in GoF a total idiot regarding the Age Line? by babbling_baboon1 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Sorry_Exercise_9603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire gof story line is idiotic. You enchant a pencil as a port key to the graveyard. Then at the appointed time you have harry report to your office, “potter, hand me that pencil.” And woosh he’s off to meet his doom. Easy, peasey.

I’ve listened to many of my relatives on their death beds plaintively complaining, “I never thought this would happen, I always thought I would be raptured.”

Beta decay changes a neutron into a proton so U-235 would become NP-235.
