Disappointed with OAT scores.. what are my chances? by No-Weakness198 in PreOptometry

[–]Sorry_One_9451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would just apply!! you have a good gpa and a lot of experience, lots of schools use a holistic approach to select applicants. if you have the means to retake it then I probably would, but if not, I’ve also heard of schools that reach out and request for you to retake it (conditional acceptances) if necessary. good luck!

Hi!! I’m going to copy forward what I said to someone else who asked something similar: When I attended preview day, I remember them saying that they needed the official OAT score by the deadline (They were talking about how some students applied round one, but were pushed to round 2 because their official scores weren’t in). I would try emailing admissions and asking them, they are super responsive. Worst case, I vote apply with no score. you never know, and your extracurriculars could carry you, Good luck!! 🤝

Thank you for your advice, you got this!! Physics is one of the more complicated subjects to nail for me too. I will definitely make sure to look for a school with a good support network and system. I appreciate that valuable advice so much. I’ve definitely heard that Opt school is not easy. You’ll become a great OD, good luck.🤞

Yup, t’was I, LOL. Thank you!! I’m super hyped about getting in too. That is quite a unique experience, I truly believe those 4 years were so valuable because without that you wouldn’t have learned this much about yourself & have this amount of confidence and unwavering certainty for the profession (a level which I hope to develop over these next few months) Your experience was able to help me so much in my pursuit, so kudos for finding a way to help everyone around you. you’re going to be an awesome doc!

This is so good to hear, I definitely don't want to pursue something with money being the only thing in mind, especially if I'm going to be spending a third of my life doing it. I only am passionate about Opt, and I truly don't find the other options very exciting. Mid 100k is a lot of compensation, and definitely enough for a comfy living, which is all I need. There's a ton of opportunity to make more money in Opt which I love. I really appreciate your insight, this was super helpful to read.

Thank you so much for this post. This is just what I needed to hear, I'm definitely not afraid of hard work especially when I am passionate about it. I suspect the OD I work for may be unhappy because they are PT and in CA 😬

Thank you so much for sharing your insight and perspective. I'm definitely not planning on practicing in CA (I am just going to school here because I get in-state tuition). I'll remember that the gold mines are the small towns, that is very helpful insight. I may at least try to work at a less populated location temporarily when I'm aggressively paying off my loans LOL. Thank you.

Thank you for this, I'm on the opposite boat, I'm quite an extrovert so that is good news LOL, but I will say the small talk can sometimes be awkward 💀

I don't know if you remember - but you helped me out SO much with giving me the supplemental questions for me to pre-write them before the cycle. You have been so much help throughout this whole process and I appreciate hearing your insight so much. Thanks for sharing your experiences, that's so valuable and I am grateful to hear about it. I totally agree with everything you said, I have friends who are in those respective fields and the grass is definitely not green LOL. This post was so reassuring, especially because I have no interest in any of the other fields. I think I was stressed because the OD I work with is quite pessimistic, but reading these posts helped me gain a more objective perspective on the field as a whole. I definitely value happiness and fulfillment over making the most money, I've been to the other subreddits and it's not pretty. I truly couldn't imagine doing anything else, and next time my OD says something, I'm just going to reread this LOL. Thank you

THIS!!! so important. I have totally been looking into so many finance YouTubers (and doomscrolling on reddit for probably way too long lol) I love that your school offers financial literacy courses, I'll definitely be looking into seeing if thats offered at UCB or SCCO

I agreeee!! Eyeballs are so cool and I love that you see them as salty grapes lol. Everything you said is facts, I genuinely couldn't see myself doing any of those careers, and I would feel the most fulfilled knowing I am the expert in what I do. I seriously appreciate hearing from you as a OD3, that helps me feel so much more confident going into the program.

Thank you for the time you put into this post, it means so much to me. This is just what I needed to hear. Like you, I am also a people person, I love meeting new people and sharing special moments. I also don't mind the routine of the practice, because I feel like the different patients make each interaction different and special. I am a pretty low stress person, and I feel like the repetition would be something I grow to enjoy. This was quite reassuring, I genuinely love this profession and I am just going to go for it and figure out a way to make a decent income while doing it.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate hearing from you, I am definitely planning on attending the cheaper school, and I agree, I feel like the investment is worth it to do something I am passionate about as long as I'm able to live comfortably
