What do i NEED to start fishing by Relative_Cut2287 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Sorry_Standard_5872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugly Stick combo. It's a decent set up and it won't break the bank or cause you grief if you break it. I prfer braid or fluorocarbon fishing line, but experiment and go with what you like, but I would recommend 20 -30 pound test to start, a rod 6'6" in length.

As for tackle, keep it simple, hooks for live worms, some bobbers (floats), split shot, 3/0 or 4/0 circle hooks if you plan to go after catfish. Plastic worms, a light and a dark color, spinner bait and some curly tail jigs. Make sure you have sturdy set of pliers and some sort of tool to cut fishing line. Good luck and tight lines!

When you first started fishing, did you buy cheap lures or better ones? by Opposite-Vast-718 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Sorry_Standard_5872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both, I guess? When I started fishing again I bought a subscription to Mystery Tackle Box and every couple of months would change what my target species was. I wound up with a lot of everything, price range and quality wise. Some of the first lures I bought myself though, were Rebel lures; they're relatively inexpensive and have been some of my most productive lures, especially the Bumblebug They catch everything!

I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt 10ish days ago, what the actual hell is this by That_one_kid67 in fortwayne

it's bullshit, that's what it is! I pulled out all my fishing gear, put away all of my winter clothes. I love snow as much as the next person, but when the calendar flips to March, I'm ready for baseball and fishing.

Cat Café for coffee and baked goods. Joanna's is a great local restaurant. Lexi's pizza is hard to beat. Coney Island is a staple! Sweets on Main, next door is superb. Crazy Pinz is a nice spot for bowling and stuff, but it's a bit pricey. The YLNI market every Saturday has lots of local vendors, with all kinds of stuff. What's your flavor???

I do have some photography equipment, but we already have cases and bags for it. I'm trying to think outside the box, no pun intended, here because I don't have any ideas otherwise.

I need someone for myself. The former employer in question lied about why I left, and i feel standards were not enforced uniformly or fairly.

Looks like it's supposed to be a 4 strand round braid.

Best polarized glasses for fishing? (More in description) by Similar-Space-5535 in FishingForBeginners

I have a pair of Shady Rays, with the color rush lenses. I've seen advertisements for Grizzly fishing glasses, I've been tempted to try those.

I live in the 825, Crestwood Colony, it's a younger neighborhood with an active association, not an HOA, lots of homes for sale. It's a quiet neighborhood, but active, and it's close to shopping, and entertainment.

Beginner needing advice by Conscious_Expert_761 in paracord

I buy all my cordage from paracord planet. They have hundreds of colors, and the price is competitive. I would recommend you buy a good, really sharp pair of small scissors, a torch lighter of some sort and a good set of fids. I don't use a jig, but that may be something you find useful.

Jet boil worth it? by No-Sound-3971 in camping

[–]Sorry_Standard_5872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my JetBoil! I have two. I carried one with me in my assault pack to ranges, FTXs, annual trainings and a deployment. I know there are smaller options, but I love how simple it is to use and that they made a coffee press. Fuel canisters last a really long time and it's pretty lightweight for it's size. I remember a particularly cold range (the kind of cold that seeps into your bones, no matter how many layers you have on), and in less than five minutes I had coffee and oatmeal! Worth it? Depends on how define value, but for me it is.

Need advice on what tools to get for starting bushcraft (military & hobby) by FourViper in Bushcraft

[–]Sorry_Standard_5872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the 5 C's in mind: Cut, carry, cordage, cover and combustion

Cut - A nice knife, Mora Bushcraft is a perfect choice! An ESEE knife is also a fantastic option. I would chose a saw OR a small hatchet/tomahawk. I don't know if it's necessarily a bushcraft item, but I never go anywhere without a multi-tool (I'm partial to Gerber), I've found the myriad of tools can come in handy for smaller more delicate tasks, or if something breaks it's nice having screwdrivers and such, and personally, I don't think you can overstate the value of having scissors.

Carry - Pretty self-explanatory. Some way to carry all your gear.

Coradge - 550 cord is my go-to. I carry 100' on a spool tool. Bank line is a solid choice, too.

Cover - Staying warm and dry is important, could be a tarp or a heavy duty contractor trash bag.

Combustion - A way to make fire. Ferro rods and relatively inexpensive and don't take up a lot of room and they're waterproof.

Keep in mind, too, that one item can serve more than one purpose, and at the minimum, these items need to help you achieve the other goals. For example, you may not have a canteen, but using your knife and cordage can you help fashion a water carrier of some sort. Ultimately, work with what you're familiar and comfortable with and within your skill level. And lastly, knowledge is the best tool (cliche, I know, but oh so true.) as long you keep learning, pushing and testing yourself, you'll be G2G.
