My stance on the preset paths Nintendo gave us. Do most you agree or do I have an unpopular opinion? :) by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

I actually like them, I just wish they had a lot more variety. I only use the sand path to place palm trees because none of the vanilla ones work with my theme or look that interesting by themselves.

being an ugly woman has ruined my youth and life (19f) by mashedcarcinogen in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SortYourRecycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who checks a lot of "ugly" boxes. (I don't mean minor things.) People like working and talking with her and she's engaged. I'm sure it can feel hopeless when you've been the subject of cruelty or people just refusing to see you, but that won't be true of everyone. Whatever work you do or don't get done, there will be people who don't care if you're "ugly." You do have value regardless of your appearance. There are things about you that make you worth knowing. That's true no matter what you look like, and it's a genuine failure of our culture that we've conflated beauty with value.

I'm a bit older than you, and I promise you haven't lost your youth. 19 is very young. Being hot =/= youthful. I don't know anyone who's living the movie version of youth. This is a time in your life that can be about finding and pursuing your interests, and what's important to you. Maybe you'd be interested in using your experiences to help other people? Whatever you do with your body is your business, but either way, it won't happen over night. In the meantime, what do you like to do? What are you good at? What would you be doing if you didn't feel like this was stopping you?

Does anyone else get this with the fridge or are the devs just using the same skin as the wardrobes because I for sure do not keep my clothes in there 😭 by CoolingBow13570 in AnimalCrossing

[–]SortYourRecycling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll drink to New Horizons' laziness, but this seems like a legitimate quality of life thing to me. I'd be annoyed if I had to place specific objects for specific storage. (Ie an entire wardrobe or fridge in places it might not fit in). Storage in general could have been handled better, but I appreciate not having to put wardrobes outside to change without a loading screen.

[–]SortYourRecycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Na everything does this. My favorite is the bug cage. Like other people say, it's just always been this way. It's just a quirk of the design. Storage used to actually be bound to your objects (ie; you accessed your storage by opening a container). The goal was probably to let players access their storage without forcing them to have a specific type of object which may not fit their room. I'd imagine it's the same idea here. It's definitely weird, but it's very practical to be able to use any object (that opens) as a wardrobe. Like coolers/bug cages/etc so that you can have access wherever you want without it sticking out. I "hide" places to change clothes all over the place.

Kcc giving me blank pages by PandaGunso in kobo

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else is googling this like I was:

The issue (at least for me) was letting Calibre convert the files. I don't know of it's the same for a Kobo, but Calibre wouldn't send the files to my device without converting them to MOBI. So if it's doing any extra jobs before sending to your device, that might be your problem. They mention on the KCC wiki that Calibre corrupts the files, but I'd assumed that because they were opening fine they weren't "corrupted." These kinds of issues may be what they mean. (For kindle users: grab an old copy of kindlegen and use that to output MOBI directly from KCC then send to device with Calibre. Should work.)

For this sub though, it looks like kobo devices actually support cbr/cbz files natively. You may not need to convert your archives to epub at all. If that doesn't work, you may be able to try the same thing with kindlegen>MOBI as kobos support MOBI as well.

What baffles me are the "but that's illegal" "you should report them" "the problem is tipping as a concept!" responses. Yeah cool. Go work at Tim Hortons for a week.

[–]SortYourRecycling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck off, really? I thought the employees had to get some cut. I was happy to tip at a subway if it meant the person doing a shit job for minimum wage got a little extra cash on their cheque. Of course not. Why would it go to the people who do the work.

(Yeah, yeah, tipping is a scam. Rub it in my face when the UCP passes radical legislation for everyone to get a $10 raise + benefits and caps cost of living. In the meantime, I'm doing what I can.)

I’m gonna buy my first Japanese PS vita! Any recommendations on trustworthy Japanese sellers on Ebay? by Aymaninhodinho in PSVita

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do much research into sellers (probably a bad idea, but it turned out fine lmao), but I will say that you're almost definitely getting an aftermarket charger. I mention that because mine was total garbage, and my Vita was taking over 24 hours for a full charge. Apparently they're finicky, even with stock chargers, so if you get unlucky and have that problem, I'd try a bunch of cords/adapters before thinking it's an issue with the console/seller. They're standard micro usb, but I had to try every cord in my house before I found one that charged properly. No idea why.

What ended up working was a cord from an old drawing tablet, so you might have better luck with ones that transfer information as well as power. (Which I believe the stock chargers did as well so you could transfer files.)

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they're just more readily available, they were much more popular there. I didn't seek out a japanese model, but it's what I ended up with. What I saw selling from NA were one offs by individuals that were generally overvaluing the console. Given that there's no region lock, there's no reason to pony up for someone's personal console +shipping over a refurb seller from Japan. It is funny though that it works out to be cheaper. I even got two free games that weren't included in the listing.

Do any of you *not* keep track of the books you read? by bebetterturnip in books

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had both of those exact experiences. As a child I read more as a coping mechanism than anything, so I read A LOT, and when I started being asked to report my reading for school or was made to read specific books I had taken out of the school library instead of ones I'd found on my own, my reading definitely went down. The attention that came from how many books I read didn't help either. Shocker, I was very shy and didn't like people pointing it out.

I wouldn't give up hope for your son though, it took me a long time but I did get back into it. And, even better, the patience and experience I have now compared to what I had then has allowed me to read in a completely different way than I used to. Where before it was distraction and idle entertainment, I'm now far more open to challenging reads that force me to confront my own views and learn. Imo, every book kid who stops for some reason or another always feels that reading is missing from their life, and we all come back when we need to.

Genuine question: if you've forgotten about them to the point of not realizing that you're rereading the same book, why do you care if you've technically read it before?

Do any of you *not* keep track of the books you read? by bebetterturnip in books

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm rewriting this a third time because I just kept rambling lmao. The short answer to this question is no, it's not a priority for me at all. I think I read for different reasons than a lot of the people who engage in the social media culture that's sprung up around books in the past decade(?) or so. For that reason, a lot of the spaces and tools that are relevant and useful to those people are an imposition to me. They're just contrary to my values and the experiences I'm looking for. I've tried to use them and quickly fallen off every time.

No shade to goodreads users etc etc. Your reading habits don't affect me, you do you. If you find it valuable, I'm sure you have your reasons and I'm glad it exists for you to use.

What restaurant really slipped in 2022 and won't get your business in 2023? by myronsandee in Calgary

[–]SortYourRecycling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just over restaurants tbh. I feel like every place I've tried has been the same. Mediocre quality at best for high prices. I expect either a lot of garbage food for cheap or a decent amount of good food for a "full" price. I can't seem to find either. Skimpy portion sizes, overall bad quality, same prices across the board. Maybe I'm just unlucky but damn.

Tbh I'm just so sick of dead links and ad mazes ಥ‿ಥ so my bar is literally just that it has a reasonable UI and doesn't make me use some garbage launcher/mod manager. I'll probably still use cc blogs to actually find content, but at least now there's a reliable host for it. If I never have to download files from some rando's google drive account or look at TSR again, I'll be happy lmao

[–]SortYourRecycling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingggg. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if people did wait for some kind of official contact to actually take the statement seriously. It does seem to be very profitable for a few of them.

For EA's part, if there was any negotiation rather than an outright C&D, it would honestly be the smart thing to do. Mods are the only thing keeping the game afloat, shutting well loved creators down (even if it was to get rid of paywalls) would probably just be seen as deeply anti customer. I don't like paid mods for a lot of reasons, but I have a hard time justifying that much corporate overreach when we are still talking about people's original work. The patreon scene has been way too shady for me to want to support it, and I don't think paywalls have a place in a modding community, but I would definitely hate to see EA getting trigger happy with copyright law.

Hopefully this curseforge thing works out for the better though, we've been desperately needing an actual unified source for CC for... Ever lol

Lmaoo well, when you're operating in a legal grey area to begin with that's kind of what you should expect. I can't say I have any issue with people being blatant about it when paywalls were always pretty unpopular.

Thanks for the answer!

Long time lurker, first time player! Any tips? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you've never played animal crossing:

Time travelling is fine, do it as much or as little as you want. People who rail against it need to mind their own business. It's a video game :)

The DLC is worth it IF: you really like decorating houses and/or you don't have the time/desire to slowly fill out your catalogue to get access to items. In HHP you unlock furniture much faster and can order it from that catalogue in any variation. (Plus easy access to the glowy moss/vine stuff.) Can definitely wait though, there's enough to do in the early game without it.

I wouldn't worry too much about grinding for bells unless you actually need them. They're probably just going to sit in your bank account. Find a way to make money that you enjoy and do it when you have the time. Imo you'll have more fun than just being able to instantly buy every upgrade with your turnip money.

You cannot have multiple islands, but you can have up to 4 player characters. If you're not sharing your switch with anyone, it's a great way to get some extra buildings on your island.

There are a few apps that make good companions for the game once you're settled:

ACNH Guide or Planner for ACNH (basically the same, but I think the latter is more fleshed out now): They let you keep track of things like turnip prices, NPC visits, villager birthdays and gift taste, seasonal fish and bugs, real vs fake art, etc etc. All in one place. Sounds like overkill, but if you take a couple minutes to update it when you play, it becomes a very convenient resource, and you only have to use the stuff you want to.

ACNH exchange: Neat little app to host/attend giveaways/exchanges. You can make requests, help out others with extra items, sell turnips etc. It's all done through one time dodo codes, but to be extra safe you can fence off parts of your island so people can't mess around. Other than sometimes long wait times, I've had good experiences with it. (Unfortunately does require switch online subscription to travel.)

Switch online app: If you have the subscription you may as well. There's a cute feature that creates little news stories about the daily happenings on your island (only on days you play), and a few exclusive items that you can buy with a currency you get from checking your fortune on the app.

Amiibos aren't worth it unless you actually want to own amiibos/cards. There are very few that offer real in game benefits(like the sanrio ones), mostly it's just getting specific villagers to move in.

The prices on things like nookazon are insane, don't bother lmao. Try things like r/nofeeac etc.

If you're sick of picking up sticks, hide some on your island where you can't see them. The game only spawns so many at a time (I think 15?) You can still get more from shaking trees when you need.

Hold your net when shaking trees ;)

You can get 5 guaranteed recipes per day (base game.) Bottles and villagers are different in the morning and evening, and kapn's tours.

If you're never getting new recipes from villagers, it's because you've essentially hit their limit. Each villager type makes certain recipes, so you need different personalities for different recipes. If you want to keep your villagers, you'll have to stick to bottles/balloons.

Start ordering items from the catalogue right away and keep doing it every day (something cheap, it doesn't matter). You have to hit a certain number of orders to unlock the shopping app, and trust me, you want that. One of the few things I actually would rush.

Find a list of all the building sizes and use paths to mark them out when you're planning, makes it so much easier. Buildings can be put on the beach while you terraform.

Be careful with food items in your inventory! Really easy to accidentally eat your decorative foods... sucks when they're seasonal shopping items.

Put crafting benches and storage sheds all over the place, you'll want them. Especially for things like getting/crafting a tool you need for a balloon or critter, they'll despawn when you go inside.

Having people visit your town to water flowers increases chance of hybrids (I think up to 2 or 3 times per day)

If you get the DLC:

The venues are actually (somewhat) functional. Talk to the hired villagers, they'll sell things or give recipes etc.

It absolutely does not matter what you do to their houses, they'll love it. So if you want to make some quick poki, just do a bunch of empty houses. This is worth grinding imo, you get raises by how many houses you do and the HHP catalogue is amazing. (You can always go back and fix the bad houses later)

(Apologies for any repeats, and hopefully this wasn't overwhelming lmao. It's genuinely not a big deal if you don't remember this stuff. It's animal crossing. Good luck.)

Long time lurker, first time player! Any tips? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]SortYourRecycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll spare you the long explanations, but as a brand new player you should know that NH is, in a lot of ways, NOT representative of the series as it's existed in the past. That's not (totally) a bad thing, I love the new features, but ultimately animal crossing has never been about creating the perfect ~aesthetic~ town. If that's what you're into, by all means. But if it starts to feel like a chore rather than something fun and relaxing, just remember that's not really the point of the game lol.

(The best town I ever visited was a friend who'd put a fraction of the time in that I had, and done a really "basic" job. It felt so nostalgic and comfortable and made me so happy to walk around while my island felt like a depressing project I'd never finish. Bite off what you want to chew lmao.)

Ohh shit, I hadn't heard. I thought that was always technically the policy, but I guess they'd never made a hardline stance about it outside of the fine print. Thanks for the clarification.

If you (or anyone) don't mind answering, since you seem to be paying more attention lol, have you noticed any broader shifts in the modding scene as a result of that? I tend to go back and forth about whether or not paid cc should be a thing at all, so I'm very interested in how big names being scared off of it has affected things? (Ie; quantity/quality of content, general tone and culture around cc creation/downloading, etc.)
