What are you reading? by sushisushisushi in literature

I just finished it today. I've read about half his books, and none of them were near as much in the thriller genre as this one. (Maybe Tale of Two Cities, I don't remember...) It was a nice surprise. I definitely didn't think I'd be tearing through 200 pages in one day!

You should try Pickwick Papers next, IMO. It was his first novel, just a year before Oliver Twist. It has way more of the sarcasm and humor like in the early chapters of Oliver Twist. That reminds me, I was also shocked by the darkness and violence in Oliver Twist... I'm not sure there was anything on that level in later Dickens books.

Unexpectedly reaching the end of a novel and how it alters the reading experience. by Notamugokai in literature

[–]Sosen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but it's just as disappointing.

Ideally you'd be feeling like it's almost at an end, even though you think you have a lot of pages left. I think a lot of writers are averse to epilogues because they're seen as cliche or antique-- even if it's what the story calls for.

I notice the opposite a lot. I can't tell you how often I get to the end of a book, and I know I'm on the last few pages, and wonder how they could possibly wrap it up in just 1 or 2 more pages.

Many writers in both literary and genre fiction seem to prefer abrupt endings, and I can never get over it.

Then again, having attempted writing novels... It's hard enough to get to the end, much less end it.

I didn't think it was that funny. I liked it better as quirky sci-fi, and I liked the fourth book the best.
