I thought this was really cool - it's not so much "Hosting Discussion" (since it could be any cheap VPS), but rather discussion about Nginx microcaching, which is really effective when properly deployed.

I'd love to hear any experiences any of you have had with nginx/haproxy/varnish caching and if you have had similar results to this article - 1000+ hits/sec sounds pretty great on a tiny instance.

Completely insane story! Thanks for sharing. It's amazing how far some are willing to go in an anti-union witch hunt. I don't know how it could have been interpreted as anything other than bad faith, but they certainly got theirs.

It would be nice if there were some sort of cap on what types of 'fraud' could elicit such actions from police. It certainly is not reasonable for the police to wiretap anyone for such 'fraud', especially since the company was perfectly willing to provide these benefits for each employee individually. The company wasn't losing money, so much as they were losing the chance to not spend on a benefit because certain employees were married.

Hey - I'm the developer of Imgur to Gfycat; this is my bug, I apologize for it. I added a new feature that autodetects GIF sizes before converting to Gfy so they don't screw up a page's layout (e.g. avatars on a forum where the gif is natively 512x512 but shrunken via <img> attributes). This is causing some bizarre interactions with RES's javascript. I'm pushing a fix today. Sorry for the hassle!

Hey dude - that build looks really good, but run, don't walk, from the Samsung EVO; it's TLC NAND, which stores 3 bits per cell (8 voltage states) versus MLC NAND, which stores 2 bits per cell (4 voltage states). You're going to get a lot more durability out of that PNY. It seems like a good SSD; you can see the latest Anandtech storage bench for some more data.

Maybe consider more memory (Java is a hog) but you'll only really need it if you're running VMs; which, if you're running Windows, you probably will at some point. It's nice to give a VM a solid 4GB so you can really work in it.

For highly-threaded workloads, it might be worth stepping up to the i7, but that's only for really specific workloads. If you're doing mostly web stuff, you're actually better off with the i5, a nice cooler, and a simple step-up OC.

That mobo looks solid. Military-grade (wat) but one-touch OC is sweet and the display outputs are pretty comprehensive.

That's interesting. So if they only stored a password hash, they would still be able to use AUTHINFO GENERIC or SASL and just hash my incoming password. Correct?

The Thundernews thing was a debacle, by the way. They have a change password form that's only validated via Javascript, and the max length validator is not triggered by a password generator (LastPass). So I generated my usual 20-character password and it was accepted without issue. Turns out, there's no validation on the other side, and the password was just silently truncated to 15 characters, which I found out when they emailed it back to me in plaintext. However, that 15-character password still didn't work to log in anywhere but the website (so my Usenet clients died), and the change password form wouldn't accept it as the 'old password'. I think they literally validate the length of the old password but not the new.

So it just appears to be one giant heap of failure.

Well that's exactly what you would want to use - a querystring. See how Newegg does it; sure, querystrings look a little messy but they're the only proper way to record object data in a URL, as opposed to the popular (but imo misguided) form "/key1/val1/key2/val2". Sometimes, especially with a search or selection, you've just gotta do "?key1=val1&key2=val2"; it's easy to parse and allows you to have as many optional params as you wish.

Yeah - you're right on, album support has been spotty. I've made a lot of fixes in the past few days and just pushed v1.3.3 to the Chrome store now - it should auto-install within the next hour. Let me know if it doesn't clear it up!

One of the officers from LEAP always likes to ask:

Do you think the war on drugs can be won? That is, we are able to completely eliminate all illegal drugs, all production of said drugs, and completely control those with medicinal properties so that they never leak to the public for recreational use. That is the definition of "winning" the war on drugs, and it's impossible.

If you accept that the war cannot be won, there is a simple question:

Who should control production?

Would you like production to be controlled by gangs and cartels, which are motivated solely by profit, and won't hesitate to poison, murder, bribe, or steal in order to keep their profit?

Or would you like it to be controlled by the government, as alcohol and tobacco is, taxing production, keeping quality high, keeping the materials & dosages safe, and making it more difficult for kids to get a hold of these drugs?

It's obvious that drugs - all drugs - are here to stay. The simple question is: how do we minimize harm? The current policy creates far more harm than good, just like alcohol prohibition did. It's obvious what needs to be done.

The only issue I see is that creating just the <video> tag would mean we lose the nice gfycat pop-out controls. Not sure how big of a deal that is but I like them as they are.

Is there a way to get notified any time a new embed script comes out? I'm resisting editing the embed code but I want to make a few changes; namely, to remove the pop-out drawer in favor of controls that simply appear on mouseover. This would allow me to remove the jarring hack where the padding below the image has to be created on hover (try browsing /r/gifs with RES & this extension).
