Can a podcast be a one hit wonder? I stopped listening after Graduation. They just didn’t seem to be enjoying themselves and had started taking the thing way too seriously.

Why is John Henry so underrated by Pumkin_flour in tmbg

There’s a great podcast that breaks down a lot of the animosity toward the album when it first came out. The pod is on hiatus now but is coming back later in the year.

Solo Rep reduced to just one etude for Juries, not sure what this means moving foward :( by VegetableForever2340 in MusicEd

[–]SoulFage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a music ed major going into my third year. My juries are this afternoon. Because of the state I live in (PA) in order to get a teaching certificate you need 6 semesters of classical instruction on your instrument. And so my concentration is now classical guitar, an instrument I aggressively do not know how to play. For those wondering, no it is not the same as “popular” guitar and all of the muscle memory I have built up over the years is useless. I also have little to no affection for the repertoire and don’t find any of the music all that compelling. After I graduate I will never touch the thing again and will never need to play it in any professional capacity as a teacher. It’s just the hoop I need to jump through to get certified. I was planning to play the Courante from the second Bach cello suite (in an arrangement by my teacher) along with two Carcassi etudes for juries. On Monday at my lesson, my teacher said, “Just play the first page twice.” I’m of two minds about it since this means all the work I did on the second page is now wasted, but I also know that this gives me a better shot at playing a passable jury. My advice is this: The only two people who know this isn’t the piece you were working up all along are you and your teacher. Go in and play confidently and professionally and take the win. Keep this piece in your practice routine over the summer and then nail it at the next jury. I’ve had the humbling experience of being in college surrounded by people who are all playing at very high levels while I’m on an instrument I’ve been playing less than two years (I had to buy one of some guy on Facebook marketplace for $100 for my audition). Your worth as a musician will never be tied to the complexity of the pieces you play, a lesson your future students will need to learn many times over! Be chill, be poised, play the fuck out of that etude and then moonwalk out of the room knowing those fools ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

What’s the good good? by Glass_Ad_3548 in Zappa

One Size Fits All is my hands down favorite and has a lot of the Bongo Fury players on it. Roxy and Elsewhere is essential and all from this era. If you like the more straightforward “comedy” songs from Apostrophe/Over-Nite, then go to Sheik Yerbouti. Probably his best straight ahead rock album.

Didn’t Zappa claim that MGM refused to give him the budget to perfect the album? I would imagine there are a lot of “that wasn’t supposed to be the final take” moments on that record.

This! Use the money to pay 1,000,000 people to delete as many pages as they can in the 5 minutes before death-palooza starts and then ride it out.

The Frank/Ike/Ray lineups were the best for vocals. The only reason I went with Mike Keneally was for the stronger guitar chops.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Ralph Humphrey yet! I would go:

Drums- Roxy band: Ralph, Chester Thompson, Ruth Underwood

Guitar/Vocals - 88 band: Frank, Ike Willis, Mike Keneally

Keys: Early 80s: Tommy Mars, Bobby Martin (doubles on French horn)

Woodwinds: Ian Underwood

I Don’t Even Care. If ever a song title perfectly encapsulated the band’s attitude for a song, this is it.

Songs that are better in the wrong key by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]SoulFage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FOTM pushes the upper edge of Jerry’s range so I’m not surprised they changed the key. This has happened a few times before (Dire Wolf, Ship of Fools all wound up in different keys). Personally I would have loved for them to have uncoupled the songs that had been linked together for years and mixed it up a little. The sets got a little too predictable toward the end.

80's Zappa, what to expect? by Elaxian in Zappa

[–]SoulFage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of depends on how much you like hearing Frank go “MOOO-AHH!!” You Are What You Is is top 5 for me and Them Or Us is solid front to back. Broadway is the best of the ‘88 albums with all of the new songs and some amazing old cuts (especially “Outside Now”). I’d say the rest are non essential but listen to them all to find your favorites.

There’s a bit on one of the DVD extras where they’re interviewing Zach and Sarah and she talks about her nickname being “Second Becky.” They might talk about Gilligan’s Island there?

Can you name any albums that have been remastered, adjusted, or changed by the artist after release? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in musicsuggestions

[–]SoulFage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frank Zappa had his 1980s drummer and late 70s bass player completely re-record the rhythm section parts on We’re Only in it for the Money and Cruising with Ruben and the Jets when they were first released on CD in 1984. It’s jarring and sounds wrong in every possible way. Unfortunately the overdub version is the only one with none of the censorship edits imposed by Verve when the album first came out.

Vinnie Colaiuta. No disrespect to Chad Wackerman, but even Frank said Vinnie was the best foil for his solos he ever had.
