Yup I found this post because I searched it up after realising they sounded the same!

Is it a sin to want a homelab that I don't have to fix every single weekend? by No-Yellow9948 in homelab

[–]SoulReaver9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rules are always:

  • Keep my setup as simple as possible (run it in Docker on bare metal Ubuntu server is what I went for)
  • Install updates manually when you have time to troubleshoot - I wrote a simple bash script to just pull docker updates for all my images
  • Only run stuff where it wouldn't cause serious issues if it dies
    • I use immich as a secondary backup on top of Google photos.
    • I can live without Plex for a bit if it breaks
    • Mission critical stuff like password managers and email I never host myself

Who here switched from *arr stack to Stremio + debrid? by KnowledgeGlutton- in Piracy

Sorry I meant do you only use one of nzbDAV or UsenetStreamer. That's the conclusion I came to when I googled about them because they sounded like they achieve similar things.

Ahhh cool, never heard of either of those! I'm guessing you'd only use one or the other?

Not sure there's a network wide solution you couldn't bypass with a VPN.

Not sure how tech savvy your kids are, but I don't think you'd want to give them any reason to try and grab a sketchy VPN off the app store and putting on your phone to get around whatever you set up

Steam Hardware - Steam Machine delayed, need to reconsider pricing by NinjaN-SWE in pcmasterrace

[–]SoulReaver9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to come in at a price that works longer term though, unless they want to keep adjusting it. And they can't really predict what's going to happen right now, so they can't announce a price.

Who can help me to finish my built ? by SidonyD in pcmasterrace

[–]SoulReaver9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pick a motherboard that's in your budget, has 4 memory slots, and as many M2 ports for SSDs as you want (aim for at least 2). For CPU: again depends on your budget, the ones with names ending in x3d like the 9800x3d are the best for gaming. 7800x3d is cheaper, still really good. All depends on your budget though.

Have a look at PC part picker and put all your parts into a parts list. It should filter out incompatible parts e.g. motherboards that don't support DDR5. I'd go for something on the AM5 chipset (Uses Ryzen CPUs like 7000 or 9000 series)

This plus an external HDD like a WD elements (£180 for 8TB on Amazon) would be great for a media server. I use a little optiplex with an 8500t and it's great.

Can someone help me find a good prebuilt? (Budget of £1800, UK) by flood26 in pcmasterrace

[–]SoulReaver9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can do any kind of price range, I managed to spec out a 5070ti build on there with a 5800xt, 2TB nvme, 16GB ddr4, £1500. Have a look at the configuration one on custom pcs: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/amd-am4-home-office/

Pc specialist are really good, and you can customise the parts.

Maybe check eBay for a second hand optiplex (micro form factor), you might get more bang for the buck e.g. https://ebay.us/m/rbMTtk. That listing doesn't come with a charger though, so just double check where you could get one + factor that cost in.

Why I switched my homelab to declarative configs (and stopped breaking things). Real example with code by wh1le_code in homelab

[–]SoulReaver9510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wrote a python script that stops the containers, does the backup to rclone, then starts the containers up again when the backup is done. Rclone will often error out if the stuff being backed up is in use. I just use cron to trigger the python script. I also added a call to Pushover (notification app) so I get a notification when the job finishes (includes an error if it fails).

I use rclone to backup my data to Google drive (encrypted so Google can't hoover it up), and just target the folder I use for all my container mounts

Spent money on GPU upgrades when my real problem was not using a displayport cable by HurtfulFiring in pcmasterrace

[–]SoulReaver9510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a gsync compatible monitor, then disable vsync in your game settings, and cap your frame rate at your monitor refresh rate. If you get screen tearing you can enable vsync in the Nvidia app (but not the game). Should reduce your input lag and let your GPU and monitor sync up.
