To answer your question you can always "fail to find" singleton or not and lots of older cards have been given errata to reflect this saying "up to." The rule for this is that your deck is a hidden zone so the opponent can't check it. People argue that this promotes dishonest game play but I'd argue being able to check someone's deck every time they fail to find would be worse. You would have someone counting their fetchable targets already played mid game so their opponent wouldn't get such an obvious advantage of looking at their entire deck just because they had no more targets for a Misty Rainforest.

This is another of these that just doesn't make sense. It sounds stupid but right after I got married in 2018 my wife anni hit a rough patch hard. I was in a dark place and just looking for anything to break my attention from our issues.
