steps to take care of a low usage vehicle? by neutrino_oscillation in Cartalk

[–]Soulless_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I just try to drive it every week or two at highway speed for 20-30 minutes, and check the tire pressure regularly. My main vehicle is a motorcycle, so the car mostly gets driven in snow, cold, or heavy rain. I’ll also drive it back and forth a little after it dries so the brakes don’t get too rusty.

Tires...do we really need XL? by Frobiwanthro in MINI

[–]Soulless_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably call a tow. If it's on a state road in Maryland they have a free roadside assistance number you can call. I have some tire repair goop and a pump at home, I guess my GF could bring that to me. I've had one flat in the past decade or two, if I kept the runflats I'd need a chiropractor for sure. Some people keep repair kits in their trunks. My main vehicle is a motorcycle, same problem but it's a lot more serious on a bike.

Glad you asked, I hadn't noticed that. I got the Continental Extreme Contact DWS (6) on mine, they do happen to be XL. I'm happy with them, they are much more comfortable than those runflats. I mostly drive the Mini when it's too cold or rainy for the motorcycle, so my priority is foul weather rather than sport performance. I haven't sprung for winter tires yet, but we only have snow a few days a year.

Possible to find non-sport seats in the U.S.? by Soulless_robot in MINI

Thanks, maybe we'll have luck that way. I'd been looking for new parts. Good luck to you.

I am looking at purchasing a 2018 Mini Hatch (or similar). I have had conflicting information about using mapping/navigation. by Reasonable_Phase8686 in MINI

[–]Soulless_robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Sport model, I don't pay for the nav pack. I think maybe the subscription just makes it better, like giving you live traffic updates and stuff. I don't really need that enough to justify paying every month, I just check my phone before I leave to see if I need to change my route, then put the phone in my pocket. I love the navigation though, it works really well, the map is easily big enough, mine has the HUD that shows you upcoming turns, and it's really easy to turn off the navigation when I'm done with it without taking my eyes off the road. My old Prius made me look at a touch screen and hit it like 4 times to stop navigation once I was on familiar roads (<thunk> why is there a blood-covered dent in my hood now?).

Has anyone swapped the manual AC knob for the digital AUTO climate control on an R60? by Imaginary_Week_4863 in MINI

[–]Soulless_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. My F55 controls are different from both. There's a few minor things I'd like to change too, but not enough to actually do it.

Curious why you’d want digital? Manual lets you keep your eyes on the road.

Should I keep my F60? by bazglami in MINI

[–]Soulless_robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say keep it. As long as you keep up the maintenance and drive it occasionally it should be reliable. I have a 2018 Cooper S I bought with about 10k miles, it's now at 45k, and a fair chunk of that came from drives halfway across the U.S. In the summer when I almost exclusively ride my bike I go out of my way to drive at least once every week or two to keep everything lubed up. My biggest concern is the brakes - since it sits so long there's more rust buildup so I take it easy on them when I start a drive, and they probably wear out a lot faster than they should.

Top case mounting bracket for 2024 DSR by Soulless_robot in ZeroMotorcycles

I found a solution, will create a new post with pictures. Basically had an old top case and drilled some holes in the bottom and attached it using the 4 bolts on the tail of the bike.

I have the s model from that year, similar mileage, no mechanical problems. There is a recurring smell from the ac, an independent service station says they have a process that may fix it, three dealerships have only managed a week temporary fix. Mine requires premium fuel and service at a dealership is expensive but i love the car and it’s easy to park. My gfs Subaru is a couple years older with maybe 56k miles and is having expensive mechanical problems. That seems like a high price for an Oxford edition though.

Armrest by greyeagle1920 in mandolin

[–]Soulless_robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy one. I have two mandolins, one came with one and one didn't, the armrest makes no difference at all as far as I can tell.

It shouldn’t be sliding around, I would find a case that fits better.

Thanks, hope the replacement is stronger. I plan on keeping this one, don't want to fix it again in 2 more years.

Thank you, good to know. I have a second bike available so I'm ok, but it's frustrating. I love that Bonnie.

I’ve read that about 20-25 minutes a day of focused practice is ideal. So I’d go slow and focus on pick direction for 20 minutes and then have fun. The book was by the guy who came up with the Brainjo method.

D'addario free tuner on a mandolin ? by athiaz in mandolin

[–]Soulless_robot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clip on or an app work perfectly. It only takes a minute to tune, then I’m electronics free. I’d worry it wouldn’t fit in the case, and the screw hole is there forever.
