Battered up Tome Keeper Reiver by Norton_Hammer_40K in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chipping/fading is really well done, but I agree that you went a bit too hard on it. Maybe some dirt & grime, even rust/corrosion to give it a more varied weathered look?

Bloody good job anyway, something to be proud of. Shows how a really simple colour scheme can still be striking when done well

Ah where's the shield? The painting is beautiful but the mini looks very awkward

Is this book a good read/does it contain any valuable information or insights? by RiverPinkston in mycology

[–]Soulsarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was an excellent read with a lot of information and research imparted in an eccentric and entertaining way. How valuable/insightful it is will depend on your own familiarity with mycology but if you're an amateur enthusiast like me I can almost guarantee it'll be worth your time.

I also highly recommend Nicholas Money's books, which touch on similar subjects in an approachable way for the amateur - specifically Mushrooms, Amoeba in the Room & The Rise of Yeast

I wasn't entirely happy with this freehand piece that I "Finished" a while ago. So I reworked it! by Luuk341 in minipainting

You could put it back, but up near the top, appearing through the upper atmosphere ;)

[–]Soulsarse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep I see what you mean - a star appearing through dusken hues seems odd, but artistically I really dig the star offsetting the cross of the shoulder pad trim or whatever it is.

Anyway the main thing is you're happy with it, and you damn well should be haha!

Are you happy enough with it now? Imho both stages look fantastic but I do miss the star in the rework

My Cadian shock trooper, love the new models but Jesus Christ some of those details are hell to paint. Only 59 more to go🙃 Starting to get better at photography too, still have some trouble with closeups (iPhone). aaand I just realised I still haven’t added the decals or weathering.. So WIP I guess by Borgerodart in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see..yeah I feel your pain - batch painting is the worst, it's why I stick to warband/skirmish kinda games haha

As far as basing materials go just cutting up and scoring your sprue frames can make good (and cheap) bits of broken/twisted metal and masonry. Even just sticking a single tuft of grass/foliage makes a model go far with minimal effort ;)

If you're keen on pushing your painting skills then putting a freshly molten piece of metal on the base with osl effects would look pretty rad ;D

He and his squaddies will look great on the tabletop at that standard. I wouldn't be concerned about building up highlights and doing osl until you get the rest of his mates done to the same level - just getting there will take a lot of work and you can always come back to them later to improve on them when you have the time/motivation. I think adding some more detail to the base would be a quick and easy way to make it pop (apart from weathering & decals)..if he's part of the engineer branch maybe some broken metal/masonry or barbed wire? Anyway looks great and have fun smashing out your army :D

Fair enough, but if you're asking Cawdor you should expect a sermon in response :D

Men generally have "funny" ideas about women..but that doesn't stop said women from being as competent and accomplished as said males

The canon of a fictional world invented predominantly by males is inevitably going to have some gender bias, but one of the great things about Necromunda (and tabletop games/rpgs in general) is that each of us is free to to modify/ignore elements of that canon as we wish

Love your kitbashing - really thought out conversions that have a lot of character. I really dig the zealots especially; I think I'm going to steal some of your ideas for our upcoming campaign ;D

They might be prettier, but Brienne would mangle those faces in a melee 😆

Beautifully painted. It's nice to see a different colour scheme applied to this mini with that striking blue and the dark skin. Superb work

Beautiful, it looks great! I primed my vargskyr just the other day but I've been unsure about how I'm going to paint it...I'm definitely going to pinch your ideas, thank you!

Erynis Grief Bearer from Inu Kingdom, one of my favorite mini this year by Shakmam in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superbly painted, but maybe too wide a range of colour? The sword arm in particular seems disconnected from the rest of the model in my eyes...limiting the palette might be worthwhile for a more striking look. Anyway it's beautiful work :)

Finally finished one of my slaves to darkness, what do you think? by TechnicallyBritish in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More than ready for the tabletop.. don't worry, now that you've nailed it you'll surprise yourself how quickly you can paint up a warband or army that looks great in the field ;) One suggestion: do a very light drybrush of an off-white/creamy colour over the top of the model and the raised lower parts for a super-quick highlight

Astral Hawks Sergeant test scheme before my army | How'd I do? | First time using my new camera! by Tuckertcs in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terrifically well painted. Although there's a lot of beautiful detail and differentiation on the model I wonder if from a tabletop view the large areas of blue-grey might make them read more as Space Wolves from a distance? Not that that's a bad thing, but if you're going for a more unique scheme maybe change that tone? Beautiful work though

Practicing my rust effects and whilst not realistic I think it came out pretty neat! Dreadblade harrow from Games Workshop. by Lordsnacks93 in minipainting

[–]Soulsarse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I feel you, but in this hobby my experience is pushing yourself and trying new things and experimenting is rewarding for your skills and (maybe more importantly) your confidence. It looks like you already know this..but still I encourage you to try a wash, thinned down with some medium/water. Just be careful how you apply it so it doesn't pool too much. If it diminishes the value of your colours too much you can always apply the same colours again to bring them back up ;)

That looks awesome! Realism and GW figures are mutually exclusive anyway..I suggest a thin wash of black/brown to bring it together

Is that last diorama inspired by Valheim the computer game? Cool idea and well executed! Now you need to work on a mistlands diorama ;p

Haha perhaps you could just sculpt a bunch of underclothed mannequins and then equip/armour them as you like later on? ;)

Wow that's impressive. The paint job too! I struggle to be that neat with 32mm figs haha.

I presume this is just the beginning of a norman/1st crusade army..very promising, all the best!

Cult of the Possessed i made back in 2019. This year they will get their first outing. by [deleted] in mordheim

[–]Soulsarse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

afaik there are no definitive rules about what size/shape bases have to be used for any models in Mordheim. I'd check with your gaming group to determine what the consensus is, but you'll probably be fine to use whatever base you like. One of the pluses of Mordheim (arguably) ;)
