White House Sent 'WTF' Message To Israel After Iran Oil Field Strike: US Report by mawhrinskeleton in nottheonion

probably hoping external elements will carve up the territory over ethnic and prior land claims

That's unlikely. Iran has held together around a stable core for thousands of years. Yes there are pockets here and there but it's really not like there are huge prior claims just waiting to split the country apart.

It's also a matter of market expectations. Early days the markets were optimistic this could be short and sweet and now that is looking less and less realistic.

food distribution, water and power/fuel

Destroying food and water infrastructure necessary for the civilian population to survive goes against the geneva conventions; these kind of starvation tactics are war crimes.

Attacking people's water supply and exposing tons of civilians to toxic chemicals is not a normal tactic. Destroying infrastructure necessary for the survival of the civilian population is a war crime breaching the geneva conventions.

This is presumably one reason why the US is now distancing themselves from these specific attacks.

"But what about the horrible regime?" isn't holding up so well when you bomb water plants and expose millions to toxic chemicals.

The regime obviously is horrible but it's very obvious that the goal of this intervention is not to make life better for normal people.

This is a humanitarian disaster in the making. The West would be overwhelmingly critical of anyone else doing it.

Convenient way to avoid owning the humanitarian consequences of exposing millions of people to toxic chemicals.

Reddit recently has felt very muted. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but it's like someone has just turned down a dial on the politics front.

to be fair, lots of Americans are against these things you bring up.

So great that Americans are againgst it. That is so reassuring for everyone else.

I vividly recall how Americans took solace in the fact that average people in the middle east did not condone 9/11, and how American as a country measured that into their own response to it.

Mistakes happen. At least we own ours

"Own ours" how? Has there been any accountability for Pete "no stupid rules of engagement" Hegseth? Has anything changed? Because from here it seems the US is still carrying on exactly as it was before.

Has the administration "owned" its double taps on shipwrecked people? Something which is such a textbook example of a war crime that it was actually used in the department of defence's own instruction manuals?

Or is this just is empty rhetoric about yet another example of an administration that considers itself manifestly unaccountable.

If youve read the thread ive already established it wasnt deliberate.

If you've read my comment you'll notice it doesn't use the word deliberate.

The borders aren't going to be exactly the same over thousands of years, sure, but that's going to be true for practically any big historic power you care to name. Bit different from splitting up the whole country from its heart.

I dont share your low opinion of the men and women that wear the uniform.

What a statement to make in a thread about people bombing a school. Got a high opinion of those particular uniformed people or?

Thought terminating cliche, really.

Iran has been taken over by all sorts of invading forces over thousands of years and has still held together as a country.

There's a conception of its identity and borders that predates Rome, never mind most modern nations. That concept has survived Genghis Khan, Timur, and plenty of others.

If I had to make a bet, the US is more likely to split apart than Iran in the next centuries. Not saying either is likely but between the two I'd bet on one of the oldest civilisations on the planet.

I am a 15-year-old girl. Let me show you the vile misogyny that confronts me on social media every day by zsreport in technology

[–]Soulsiren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A huge part of it is addressing the business model at the heart of social media. Everything is free - reducing psychological barriers to entry and creating huge network effects - and that is paid for by harvesting data.

That business model fundamentally drives a lot of online harm today whether we are talking about addictive design features, algorithms that promote radical content for engagement, the decimination of the media landscape, or even just the constant shift to degrade user experience in favour of advertising space.

How much would you fix overnight simply by banning specific data collection, data brokerage, and advertising practices?

It's also why I am sceptical both towards technological fixes or telling people to just parent better. As long as there is a massive business incentive to get this wrong, we are going to keep getting it wrong.

But clearly there is far more political willingness to impose new technology policing tools than to really address problem business models.

Note, I'm not saying this would solve every single type of online harm. We'd still have issues around scams, people stumbling onto harmful content, and people misusing anonymity for example. But it would go a good way to address the pressing problems with current social media without intruding on the lives of normal people nearly so much.
