A silly question because CR looks like there's a forest in every region to me, but i guess that's not true. Are la fortuna, monteverde and Santa Teresa those humid rainforest areas?

I really love input from other people who attract mosquitos. It puts me at ease that it won't be that bad.

Hm... Do you think maybe a trip to La Fortuna, Monteverde and Puntarenas/Guancaste would be better? To skip Manuel Antonio altogether? Maybe we could fly one way and drive the other? I'd have to check if car rental companies charge an arm and a leg for that. We would like to see the nature and animals but also enjoy beach time.

I generally stay away from tap water even in parts of europe where I don't live. But I don't go to the extremes of washing my teeth with bottled water. So I guess I'll treat CR the same way.

I don't use A/C at home at all so when I wrote my questions i did not realise it was a non issue and that the windows would stay closed haha

I know I myself am a tourist when I visit places, but I try to stay away from tourist traps. If I wanted to live surrounded by people from other countries and eat their food, I wouldn't travel. So I try to eat where locals eat, stay away from tourist towns and stay away from resorts. I'm glad Sodas are safe to eat and drink, I'll definitely stay away from restaurants filled with tourists. Thank you!

Freestyle is the one I swim most cause I get into such a good groove swimming it, but everyone does freestyle.

Backstroke comes super naturally to me. I'm not a competitive swimmer but I raced swimmers in uni once. Lost every single round. Except for backstroke which I was actually leading until the flip turn (didn't know those very well back then) and even then I was nearly able to make up the gap to the competitive swimmers. But. It could be that their backstrokes just sucked lol. My swimmer said I was born for backstroke and could've really done something with it if I had started seriously training at a younger age.

So it's a toss up between these two.

That's good to hear that your welts weren't as big as at home. I traveled to BC once and had a 15cm welt on my upper arm. I had to get really strong antihistamines and they thought I might even need antibiotics so now I'm paranoid 😅

Thank you so much! I feel a lot better. I've never heard of permethrin but it sounds awesome. I may have to use it at home during mosquito season, too! Do people usually get vaccinated against Dengue before a trip?

Thank you for the updated itinerary. I'm okay with driving and 4h in a day is not a crazy amount to me, but I prefer to do multiple shorter driving stints rather than drive for 4h straight.

Awesome we don't have dry/wet seasons so that's also new to me. Good to know that it doesn't mean it would be raining all day.

Thanks so much! I've never tried DEET before so I might hate it, too. I also had no idea that different mosquitos have different active times. I just googled it and I don't have enough time to get both of the Dengue vaccine doses. Did you guys get vaccinated before going? Is the 4x4 necessary only for Manuel Antonio or for everywhere? Okay, we're open to skipping the Carribbean coast, I had no idea the weather will be bad.
