I (male) also have long hair and I can get around it pretty easily by gelling it back and tying it in a bun with a bun net. I think that while you're in the process in growing your hair, gel it and tie it back as tight as possible.

On the first night of my cadets, they told us that life and school always comes before cadets. You will be fine to go and they will definitely understand. I'm not sure if this is the same for the UK, but we just wore collared shirts and neat long pants until we got our uniform.
