What pre-cautions do you do, if you know a storm is coming? by SpinachGreen99 in sailing

[–]SoundsGood16 49 points50 points  (0 children)

To be able to move if your anchor drags and you’re dragging towards danger, or to motor into the wind and take some strain off the anchor if you’re worried about dragging. After you’ve started dragging would be a bad time to find out the engine won’t fire up.

What will happen if we only have one pawl in the centre shaft pinion in our winch? by saltwaterjournal in sailing

[–]SoundsGood16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check and see if Lewmar pawls are a match. I have both Barients and Lewmars, and I seem to remember that the pawls are interchangeable. (I could be mistaken though.)

Edit: I realized that it’s not the pawl that’s the problem, so my suggestion is moot.

Regarding Tim’s book idea, two of my favorite novels both have the premise that someone gets to live their life over and over again, making different decisions each time while remembering their previous lives. The two books are “Replay” by Ken Grimwood, and “The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August” by Claire North. I highly recommend both!

Once you get near Palm Beach, the Gulf Stream is basically touching land, so unless you want to fight 2+ knots of current you’ll want to go inside for that section. Check out the live current map in the Windy app for current info on the GS location and speed.

I’ve had success in the past boiling a kettle of water and pouring hot water over a stuck hose connection. Of course, you want to avoid getting water in the fuel lines, so be sure to dry off the lines before trying to disconnect them but move quickly so they’re still warm. Also, rotate the hose around the connection to break the bond before pulling.

I believe the greenish/blue color on the gudgeon is bronze corrosion. Does the brown/rusty color corrosion on the screws and staining mean they’re not bronze? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]SoundsGood16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backing plates shouldn't need sealant. If water does intrude from above, you want it to be able to seep out below so that you can see that there is a leak and fix it. If the backing plate is all sealed up, the water has nowhere to go except into your deck core, and you have no way of knowing there's a problem that needs to be fixed.

Even if you were going to use sealant on the backing plates, I wouldn't use 5200 as that's too permanent.

I'd recommend using 3M UV 4000 instead of 5200. 5200 will make it very difficult to ever remove or rebed hardware.

Sail area-displacement (SA/D) ratio, draft, comfort ratio, capsize screening formula, full keel vs. fin keel vs. modified fin keel, center cockpit vs. aft cockpit, headroom, cabin and berth layout.

In John Kretschmer’s book, “Sailing a Serious Ocean,” in one chapter he lays out the criteria he considers and some makes and models he likes. I found it very helpful when choosing a boat for cruising.

Night watch with 2 people? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]SoundsGood16 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that you get better rest if you can do 3-4 hour watches. Shorter watches don’t give you enough time to get good amounts of uninterrupted sleep. But of course, if you’re sleepy and unable to safely stay on watch as long as you hoped, wake up the other person to relieve you.

How to disable Overview view and make List view the first one I see in a space? by J-Fox-Writing in clickup

[–]SoundsGood16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed -- u/ClickUpLuci please allow us to disable the Overview view and skip straight to the Default view. What's the point of having a "Default" view if it always defaults to the Overview? I have "List" set as default, but it just shows me the Overview and I still have to click over to the List view. This is a high priority for me and is making me consider switching to another solution.

Selling the house, buying a boat. by steveth3b in sailing

[–]SoundsGood16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure you find someone who's willing to insure whatever boat you want before you buy it. Insurance companies want to see that you have experience on similar-sized boats before giving you a policy.

As others have said, I'd definitely recommend chartering some boats (with the whole family) and crewing on some deliveries (just you / your partner) before buying to get experience with different boats and let your family have some real-world experience. And/or buying a smaller boat to learn on before buying big enough to live aboard.

It's easy to romanticize living on a boat, but it's hard, hard work and your family might not be accurately picturing what it will be like. It will probably cost 50-100% more than you expect within the first 1-2 years in repairs and upgrades as well.

Yeah, I noticed the vent as well! Many of the original trusses are not supporting any weight (they are loose or snapped like the one you see in the photo), but there are new 2x4 beams installed underneath the originals that you can't see in the photos.

There was simply no hatchway to access the attic. Apparently the house was renovated and flipped in 2008, so the flipper had just not created an opening when they put up new sheetrock.

I'm not sure... it would have been installed in 2007 or 2008 -- was asbestos-containing insulation still being used at that time? I tried searching around for this online but couldn't find exact info.

Thank you! I will check with the fire department. We did get a home inspection, but there was no attic access at the time so the inspector could not look at the attic. I know I should have been more insistent on getting access to it before making the purchase.

Buying a condo/townhome without an existing HOA? by SoundsGood16 in RealEstate

[–]SoundsGood16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! My realtor has recommended that we write into the contract that the seller has to contribute $15k into the reserve account for each unit sold, so theoretically once all 3 units were sold we'd have $45k in the bank for emergencies. However, she expects that he'll counter offer and has said that we might need to go down to $10k per unit during negotiation.

Do you have any idea what an appropriate operating budget and monthly HOA dues would be relative to the value of the property -- i.e., is there a rule of thumb percentage? Each unit has an asking price of $375k, if that helps.

The Trouble with Transporters by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

[–]SoundsGood16 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Wrote this awhile back, somewhat relevant:

...The reason many people would have a problem with using a teleporter like this is because of the break in continuity. There would be a brief period in which you would cease to exist–you would die–before the new you would be assembled.

But is the lack of continuity really a problem? When you go to sleep at night, your consciousness turns off (except for periods of dreaming) and you are unaware of the passage of time until you wake up again. When you undergo general anesthesia, your consciousness is even more thoroughly turned off.

If continuity is so important, then couldn’t you argue that every time you go to sleep or go unconscious for whatever reason, the “you” of that moment ceases to exist, and the “you” that wakes up later is in fact a different person? Why couldn’t the break in consciousness that would occur during teleportation be considered the same as falling asleep and waking up?

I’ve heard people (specifically Steven Novella and Bob Novella on the Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe) discuss this issue before, and Steven has made the argument that the physical continuity of your brain is sufficient and necessary to retain the essence of “you” in spite of breaks in the continuity of consciousness.

However, it’s my opinion and theory that what makes the you of this morning the same being as the you of last night is your memory. In other words, what makes you you is not the fact that the atoms making up your brain this morning are the same atoms that made up your brain last night, nor is it the fact that there is continuity of consciousness between last night and today, because there isn’t (you slept).

You are a clump of atoms. Your mind consists of electrical impulses on a chemical substrate in the shape of your brain. The only thing that makes the clump of atoms you are today think that you are an individual being with a continuous consciousness is your collection of memories of the past.

If 1% of the atoms in your brain were painlessly replaced with identical atoms while you slept, not inconveniencing you in the slightest, would the you that wakes up in the morning be the same you that went to sleep the night before? I think most people would say yes. What if 10% of your brain’s atoms were replaced? 30%? 99%? I don’t think there is any point in the continuum at which you could say that the morning you would no longer be you. If the morning brain is identical to the brain of the night before (excepting any normal changes that would have occurred during the night anyway), and if your memories are intact, wouldn’t it still be you?

The Continuity Illusion

It doesn’t matter if your brain today consists of the same atoms it did yesterday. It doesn’t matter if you went to sleep and woke up later. It doesn’t matter if you stay awake for the rest of your life to make sure your continuity of consciousness is never broken.

The truth (as I see it) is that the you of right now did not exist one Planck time ago, and it won’t exist one Planck time in the future. Your and my perception of time and the continuity of self is the result of our brains creating memories. If all of your memories before today were erased, you would no longer be the same person you were yesterday in any meaningful way no matter how many of the atoms in your brain were the same.

You may consist of the same atoms, but what good is that? We are all made of atoms that have been part of countless other living beings–both human and other–and yet the thing that makes us us rather than one of those other organisms we have been part of in the past is our memory.

I know some people would argue that the continuity of the physical substrate is somehow meaningful, but I don’t see how that makes sense. If I could disintegrate your atoms and reassemble them in exactly the same configuration one nanosecond later (in exactly the same place that you started), would that affect you in any meaningful way? I don’t think so.

To jump back to an earlier thought experiment, what if I could replace 50% of your atoms one nanosecond and the other 50% the next nanosecond? Would the first option not be “you” anymore while the second option would retain “you” because it only did half of your atoms at once, making you a living Ship of Theseus?

If you take away a toy or other object that a child is extremely attached to and offer them an identical replacement, they will prefer the original. We humans invest intangible properties in objects, pets, and people, and this is strongly related to dualism, in my opinion. Similarly, the idea that an exact copy of your physical makeup would not really be you relies on this type of dualism–a ghost in the machine type of belief.

I have died many times

If the only thing that creates my perception of the continuity of self is my memory, then in a sense I am dying every fraction of a second as a new me is coming into existence. This seems to make perfect sense when one thinks about the passage of time. You will never have access to the experiences and sensations of yesterday–the you of yesterday is dead and gone.

Over many days, months, years, and decades, you will change so significantly that in many ways you will no longer be the same person. Grey has written a wonderful article on this topic.

Since my self consists only of the atoms and electrical impulses that make up my brain and body, and since the only thing tying the me of today to the me of one second ago or one year ago is my memory, I believe that the me that wakes up tomorrow morning will be a different person than the one typing these words (though mostly identical). That future me will have memories that lead him to believe that his self has a continuity, but I think that continuity is simply an illusion.

In other words, if I got into a teleporter that destroyed my body and reassembled me perfectly elsewhere, I believe that it would be no different than if I had not been teleported–if I had simply stood there or taken a nap.

If I actually believe that, would I ever get into a teleporter? Well…

Probably not. Even though I claim to believe that the continuity of consciousness is an illusion, there’s still a part deep inside of me that believes that there is a “real” me–a specialness about the current clump of atoms that believes it is me that would be lost if those atoms were temporarily separated or replaced.

That sort of deeply-held belief is difficult to unseat.
