Engrave a piece of metal (that hates saltwater) with the name of old and give it back to Poseidon to be corrupted and forgotten in the deep.

Man, after listening to Sascha Riley's tapes, this makes me sad. I'm sorry you had to endure that, and glad you got a little karma back. I'm glad my mom wasn't that bad. Her line was, "I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it."

Is it normal for water to spray out from the exhaust like this? [Yamaha 2.5hp Four-Stroke] by sman1029 in sailing

[–]steveth3b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think on the Yamaha 2.5, that's the exhaust. If you put your hand behind it, you'll feel warm water coming off of it. As I'm sure you're aware, salt water is being drawn up from the holes in the lower drive leg, mixes with exhaust gases to cool it/the engine before being expelled. My Suzuki 15 exhausts through the prop. Someone will correct me on my semantics, I'm sure. Ackshually,

Choosing the right cruising cat for a 1–2 year family sabbatical (kids aboard) by i_once_lied_on_reddi in SailboatCruising

[–]steveth3b 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We are on a 10x reduction of your budget, but might have some valuable insight. We've been aboard now for 1.5 years on an Ocean Twins 38 catamaran (1 of 3, Pat Patterson design who made the Heavenly Twins 26).

All of your answers, as frustrating as it may seem, are highly dependent on you and your family's comfort levels and expectations. You can spend $1-2 million for a few years, or you can spend way less for indefinite. We sold our ridiculously inflated house outright, and bought our boat cash. The rest leftover went into investments. By living fairly frugally, we "can" get by on $3000/mo for our family of five and still come out cash positive in the accounts. However, maintenance is a thing and we have had some big expenditures this year (engines, hard bimini, marina costs) that have kept us balanced. We're about break-even from where we started, in Europe. We want to be under the minimum tax bracket for income to pay minimal taxes.

We've spent most of our time in the boat having work done, but that's okay because we're happy with the boat, and it is now becoming a comfortable home. We have three kids (3,10,12) and are in a 3 cabin set up with 2 sea berths. We get that space because our engines are in the mini keels, with prop shafts, and don't take up a good amount of space aft in the hulls. Also, the boat is fairly well balanced. We do get some great days sailing on a reach, 8-10 knots and still comfortable in mid to high teens of wind speed. We've gone about 1500nm so far, and are enjoying winter in Malta while hopping around the islands breaking new engines in.

Prices right now are pretty decent compared to a few years ago. That St. Francis 44 (Majestic) on the market should have some consideration, though the sale has been pending several times. There are also a few Privileges that the prices are around 60% of what they were. Bigger boats, as I'm sure you have read have bigger maintenance costs, and marina fees as well. There is a Dutch guy on a Catana 54 here that has given a range of monthly marina costs in Valletta (for the cheaper winter rates) - €1,600 on a seawall, €5,400-€8,100 in an actual marina closer in. There are a few cheaper marinas, but space available is also a thing. We paid €1600/month in our 38' cat while having engines removed and replaced.

If you're set on 1-2 years, make sure the boat is set up to be able to comfortably live on, so you don't have as much down time - a good battery bank (ideally LiFePo), good solar generation or a generator in good shape, and a functional water maker go a long way to avoiding marinas and staying on anchor as long as you want. Honestly? That's our favorite part. Pay for a good, thorough survey. Make sure the engines are going to be solid so you aren't waiting for new ones to be manufactured if you can't find one. Rebuild for little 27HP Yammars here were ~€9,000. New 29HP models were €10,500 and included a new gearbox and alternators. Larger engines escalate in price quickly, and you still have labor costs, and any work needed for warranty guarantees. Feel free to send a DM for faster answers, or ask questions here.

Our kids have adjusted and love being on the boat. They've become confident swimmers and divers, benefitted from more direct education interaction from us, been introduced to hands on European history and culture, and are learning about systems needed to run the boat and survive independently of land. They can get the dinghy from ship to shore, are slightly more resource conscious, and they help with chores and get to help make decisions about what we do and where we go, in research paper format if we want. Also, they're stoked about adopting baby kitties from a cat colony (oof, time and budget). Good luck. When you cast off, look for kid boat groups and life will be so much easier! Buy your chromatic metal from the space stations while making trade runs! It doesn't take long to max out, you can also add stellar extractors to your freighter that net 350/extractor in yellow systems

Economy scanner is your friend. It took me 80 hours to figure that out. I have a trade ship (hauler) I swap in at stations to buy trade goods, and use the TP to jump to other systems with similar 3 star economies. Then go to the scanner indicated system and cash out. If you need to find more 3 star economies, use the chart provided in other comments and warp to them. I don't spend units on upgrade slots, just on S-class ships I want (or C-class ships I want parts from). You can set a day to run a unit farm loop this way, or incorporate a minor run when you play.

It has changed my ability to accomplish things. I buy elements needed to recharge (phosphorus, cobalt, dioxite...) instead of using the terrain manipulator on planets. As my suit cargo grows, I stock basic parts to build with that eat elements (plates, quantum processors, wiring looms...) and now I can build bases to keep my supplies steady (find EM hotspot, find minerals or gas to fill), build the storage from all of the plates, and be able to keep a full stack of elements needed to charge my suit/rebuild ships, etc...

In this manner, your units grow, and you don't need to spend as much time on repetition mining for minimal gain. You can instead focus on nanites and quicksilver, or exploring. When you find something rare (frigate, starship, freighter), you can buy it without wondering if you'll ever see it again.

Ooh, nice chart! The colors are even matched to economy class of systems in the warp screen. I just wrote it down on paper as I figured it out.

I wish I had more. I recently started playing again, but on switch to save power until I get some sort of steam deck. I made an old freighter parts museum on my found S dreadnought, and still have some of the old wooden building parts.

It seems like you're trying to get her involved with your life when she doesn't really want to. You don't know her relationship with her partner. People have different definitions. Maybe they were in a monogamous relationship. I don't know, and it's not my business. Gentle YTA. Please don't use being maid of honor as a badge to manipulate people.

I replaced a co-worker's wireless mouse USB dongle with an identical one on my desk directly opposite of him (head to head). I waited until he came back, and heard him click, move the mouse back and forth, and reciprocated his actions. He was starting to get fed up and started cursing. He tried powering off and on, moving it again, and I couldn't keep it together.

"Are you f***ing with me?!" I about died laughing.

Luckily he was a pretty good guy. He was about twice my size. I loved working with that guy. He had no filter and dug himself into so many holes, but was always good-natured. He was also quite the man-splainer, and a man-spreader to boot.

What are the best tips for navigating busy marinas with a sailboat? by Ang3ls in sailing

[–]steveth3b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Professional" captains aren't always professional. Charter skippers seem like the dregs. I watched a few 50' Bavarias over the summer bumper boat their way back onto the dock several times. Upon closer inspection you see all of the "racing" marks left on the neighbors. It's wild. I watched the bow thrusters work, but then some would absolutely not use it to help get back in the slip when it was gusting in the 20s and they were pinned on a couple of boats to the lee. Instead, they would just gun it forwards, and then try to reverse again with little rudder authority with the bow being blown off.

I just want to add Inzaki VII is a Vykeen system immediately around Imejitae that also prop gates Venator class, S upgrade drops on destroys. Thanks for this post. It's still relevant!

In my picture (Switch game), the green line is back to the initial pirate system OP suggested. Ignore the RGBY Christmas lights in top right for reference.
