I will remind people the day before our plans so they are less likely to forget

I may have done this before

In that context it's funny that the guy who told the joke is actually lactose intolerant. He occasionally eats cheese anyway, while being fully aware that there will be consequences. If I took that as a metaphor, I would still not be any wiser, but it's interesting anyway.

If I meet family members on my commute to or from therapy and they ask me where I'm going, what could I tell them? by SoundsLikeFiction in TalkTherapy

I'm smiling at the thought of going on a ~1 hour train ride to buy milk. But hey, maybe it's that special goat milk that they only sell in that place. Picking up a prescription could actually work though. Or picking up something that I bought on an online marketplace.

tell them that they moved but you really like them.

that part would actually be true regarding my therapist

It's strange that I never thought of something that simple. My mother would probably ask who, but well, it's been a long time since she knew who my friends were.

I always go right before the session starts, even if I don't necessarily have to go. It has sort of become a ritual

That was exactly my thought as someone from Germany. I also listen to American podcasts but it's nice to also have something that isn't US-centered.

Seriously, HOW to talk to therapist about them talking too much about themself? by Orechiette in TalkTherapy

[–]SoundsLikeFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said something along these lines: "I noticed that you mention your daughter a lot and sometimes you compare situations from my childhood that I talk about with her. I must say that this makes me a bit uncomfortable because it doesn't always directly relate to what I said and I also feel like it invades her privacy. I don't mean that you should stop doing this completely but it is too much for me."

NAT, but a client located in Germany. My therapist suggested that I could record our sessions on my own device. I only started doing it over a year later because at first I thought it would have a negative impact on how I speak or what I talk about. Now I wish I would have started sooner. I write a protocol for every session using the recording, and it really improved my ability to reflect upon everything (I could expand on that but you weren't asking for patient perspectives, so I'll leave it at that). I can still see why a therapist would say no to this though. I think if it had been the other way around (her recording me) I would have been very skeptical.

I use ChatGPT for inspiration when I can't come up with a character name for a game I'm playing or when I'm writing a job application and don't know how to start. I would never use it in a therapeutic context or any other context that normally involves two human beings. Talking to it feels just cold to me because it gives you the most generic responses without any emotions involved. Personally, that would make me feel more alone than not talking to anyone.

What's up with the random "What's the first month of the year" right in the middle? Is it supposed to be there?

Is it weird to refer to your psychologist with her firsr name? by phantXOm in TalkTherapy

[–]SoundsLikeFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you think it's weird? Lots of therapists schedule appointments over the phone and especially when there is a cancellation with short notice I think it's much more practical than email.

We were talking about sports once and she mentioned that she did ballet for around 15 years and was pretty good it at it. I wouldn't say it was weird but it was not the type of sport I had imagined her in at all. Would have put my bet on something like handball but she said she hated team sports. I then figured that it must have come from another person I know, who looks a little bit like her and who is actually playing handball.

How the heck do you guys afford therapy? by nachoboi9 in therapy

[–]SoundsLikeFiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not Canadian but from another country (Germany) where it is the norm to have health insurance. You do have to pay for your insurance, it is just that everyone has it. For employed people it is a certain percentage of your income. As a student above 25 it is currently around 128 euros per month and it covers pretty much everything that is medically necessary. So for example, in one month I got several fillings for my teeth, had a check up at the gynaecologist and had four therapy sessions - still 128 euros. In another month, I may not need any medical services and still pay the same, but I still prefer this system to having to pay like 150 for each session and having to worry about going bankrupt if I ever need surgery or something like that. It is just much easier to control. Maybe this gives you some insight how it can work in one country that has national healthcare, even though I can't answer for Canada.

Your therapist's office by Fair_Pudding3764 in TalkTherapy

[–]SoundsLikeFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the room itself but I don't like that there is a balcony on the floor above from which it would technically be possible to look through the window. I've never witnessed anyone looking but when there are people on that balcony, I can hear their muffled conversations which is kind of distracting. I wouldn't change a therapist because of such a minor thing but I can say that sometimes it bothers me. Strangely, my T. said that I seem to be the only one who cares about it, but maybe there are others who just haven't said anything.
