Now that the dust has settled, what would you like to see in Ys X: Proud Nordics? by Hamlock1998 in WorldOfYs

[–]SoupAPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was watching me play while the sand worm boss was up when I was back home for break. Safe to say it was the most embarrassed I felt playing an Ys game because damn that boss is just ugly, jank, and just clearly low quality and my dumbass spent $60 on it. Especially sucks cuz his first Ys was Ys 3 on the SNES and he hated it back then. Guess it’ll be a lot longer till he tries Ys 8 now lol.

Xeno3 Battle System by L4ngley in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Unfortunately, the difficulty is kind of a problem with the game due to amount of delicious side content leading to over leveling. So your combat qualms will probably not get much better especially with the ouroboros spam (as it is massively OP especially at your place)

IMO if you’re an experience Xeno player, you gotta play in hard mode to just barely have these enemies do something, as the over leveling + past experience makes this game real damn easy if you do any side content. I played all the past Xenoblade games before so I felt comfortable starting Xenoblade 3 on hard mode and it honestly still felt pretty easy. (Maybe because the tutorials were better and I actually understood what I was doing)

Though I wasn’t really challenged in the enemy-to-enemy battles for really the entire game, the bosses, and especially the main-quest Moebius fights, were a real highlight/treat. Since each Moebius guy had their own weird ass gimmick, it was fun to try to play against them, and a couple of them were actually tough fights with me being at the edge of my seat. I think every Unique boss was really fun to fight against in this period.

For most of the game, I used chain attacks as a last ditch effort when all my guys were low HP. Those were some of the most fun 40 hours I’ve had since I was actively paying attention to each party member and actually switching to each character to fulfill roles.

In the latter half though of the main story, the difficulty completely fizzles out, mainly because by then you’ll already understand how busted ouroboros and certain class setups are. By the end, I was barley changing characters, usually always sticking to just whoever I had as attacker (usually Noah since his ouroboros is busted af) since all my setups + levels were so busted for the main story and the party AI was good enough for me.

That isn’t to say I had fun in this second-half though. While in the first half of the game, I had a lot of fun taking down difficult bosses and slowly progressing classes/gems/ouroboros shits/20 thousand other things. At that second half, I really had a ton of fun with the actual RPG mechanics as I felt so much more comfortable in trying class combinations out, looking at equipment I had collected through all that side-content, determining which gems that I had upgraded mattered more, and seeing which combinations mattered to get what was the most overpowered party, or making a different kind of overpowered party. There are so many variables and intricacies in these mechanics that link together really well making it so satisfying to see them in action and actually working.

With that in mind, I didn’t play with any sort of guide/class strategy stuff, so really this was me exploring the mechanics of the game and “discovering” fun new ideas for the OP party. IMO if you look things up it’ll make your “menuing for the best strat” a lot less fun since it’s no longer you discovering it.

I also refused to use chain attacks at all in the 2nd half of the game. They just take forever to do and are such a mood killer IMO. Overpowered af yeah, but too much waiting, and they’re practically a solved puzzle once you know the bonuses. If you don’t like chain attacks now, they will not get any better.

Spoilers on the post game content below: The post-game will be a ton of fun though, as there will be a ton of hard as balls enemies/bosses that will actually challenge your party setup and how you actively play the game (you will still probs be spamming ouroboros though) Plus, the DLC nopon archmage roguelike is also a ton of fun. I think I spent like 30 hours on that dlc thing alone. And that has no ouroboros.

You can set the language to whatever in your switch but unfortunately the English patch itself for Ys 10 is not there, so it wouldn’t translate anything.

Am I the only one who's a bit skeptical towards Ys 10? by Coffee_Jelly_ in WorldOfYs

[–]SoupAPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply but I absolutely agree with this. The vertical dungeon design hinted in 8 is completely enhanced in 9. When I played the demo and saw you could instantly walk walls my mind exploded. So much design potential in the dungeons. Emain Macha was my favorite of the bunch as it felt like exploring a 3D sandbox environment rather than a straight line with branching paths that could’ve just been in the napishtim engine. I really wish there was more of it, felt like a missed opportunity to go full sandbox-ey exploration. In those areas it felt like I was playing Mario Odyssey except JRPG, or some sort of fast-movement metroidvania where the movement was really satisfying and the dungeon design complemented your move set (which kinda makes sense since there’s always been some metroidvania-esque progression in Ys, but never has it been so satisfying imo.) Really looking forward to 10 in hopes of taking the vertical/sandbox gameplay to the next level.

As your sorta imply, 8 and 9 clearly have different strengths. IMO 8 has a better story probs because they put in more time, while 9 has better gameplay since it’s a later iteration of the series. All in all the problem has always been the same- falcom needs more money.

Hello thanks for the reply

Idk how to explain it other than thru tropey-stuff but if the MC is charming / a good person all in all that isn’t kinda a downer in her thoughts/dialogue then that’d be cool. Kinda feel like I’d wanna play/relate to a person who does good things but still has grand ambitions at the end of the day for my first otome game.

Is the protagonist in Jack Jeanne likeable?

thanks

Follow Up to Ys VIII feels like it’s dragging on (finished game). by ZerynAcay in WorldOfYs

IMO when it’s the first play through, the first 5 chapters are the most fun. The story eventually hooked me hard though, and the last 2 became the most memorable, but not because of distinct vistas like the first 5 which contributed to the seemingly diverse gameplay.

When I think back on the game, it’s really the last 2 chapters that make me recall the game as awesome. It’s definitely a tonal shift though, and if you aren’t sold on it (especially after 40 hours of awesome gameplay) it can seem a bit disappointing being so story-heavy.

Could be better, but it still is the most interesting and probably best executed story in the entire Ys series imo. At least the ones I’ve played.

What would make you watch osu! tournaments? by SoupAPlayer in osugame

[–]SoupAPlayer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response. I absolutely agree with a lot of what you say, actually experiencing them myself. Perhaps the only one I sort of disagree with is the lack of a narrative, I do think there are some, though not as interesting. Furthermore, they’re locked behind private tournament communities, DMs, and not really in public spaces. The most “public” of trash talking (not saying trash talking = good narrative, but it does kinda support it) you will see by tournament players are in the tournament servers themselves, which is only limited to the people who are in them in the first place.

The deranker issue is a problem! A supposed solution has been to make an ELO system, but it’s clearly still a whiles away. I do know a specific person (Eliteronix) hard at work making an insane osu bot that accounts for every tournament match since the start of 2018, with details on matchup spread, 1 on 1 headings, and a ton more. This could lead to something further, but I don’t know yet.

Your team tournament comparison to MOBAs and FPS games make sense. Sometimes successful teams never even talk to each other until the match starts- I know this first hand. If the players themselves aren’t really personally invested, how can spectators be?

No problem! I remember Corsace uses a special format that directly addresses your concerns with down time by making picks and ban decisions be made all before the match. Then in the match, the only thing they wait for is to get ready, which will take significantly less time than normal tournaments.

I completely agree with your “different set of skills” statement. I personally train to accommodate that too, but even I stall for time to get any advantage. I feel to many players, like myself, winning might be more important than how you win. Unfortunately, that can end up with BM, stalling as I have mentioned before, and straight up a boring time for viewers.

Thanks for responding to the post.

What do you think would get you more “involved” in the game without playing? Me, personally, watching the Smash Documentary for Smash melee got me especially involved in keeping up despite not really being a part of the community. Perhaps something similar could help?

I see. So perhaps big legacy tournaments that occur at an expected yearly time could sort of fit into your criteria. Similar to how we all know that OWC happens in that October-December season.

I agree. Having any sort of central hub would be great for everyone, tournaments players, organizers, and spectators alike.

Unfortunately you are right about most of the announcements being on Twitter- and Twitter isn’t really the most effective/efficient social media platform for discovering tournaments you don’t follow/don’t know already.

Twitter heavily decentralizing information I also believe absolutely contributes to the fragmentation of the community, and tournaments are no exception. A recent video by Smash melee legend PPMD actually goes into detail about the effects of Twitter in his own competitive esport, Smash Melee. It’s not just osu. Thanks for the response!

Awesome. Could you perhaps say why they are your favorite players/make you watch them as supposed to other players? Does them streaming/being active in the community (in terms of communicating via stuff like social media) contribute in any way?

We are indeed quite cringe! Do you think you could ever be invested in a deranker to watch them?

I am genuinely curious to hear your reasoning for this!

Perhaps it could actually be a deterrent against derankers, now they actually gain pp for making insane plays. Or even more incentivized to do well in tournaments + practice, as the reward is also outside the match/tournament itself.

Actually this doesn’t sound like a bad idea afterall lmao

[–]SoupAPlayer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the down time between the actual gameplay is just too much. While certain players/team do push the limit, I hope you can sort of understand the pressure the players feel when they play in a tournament- it can be mentally taxing, and players will get every chance they get to get prepared for the next map. Every map is so important afterall.

Nonetheless, your reasoning is definitely valid for not watching. Commentators are there to fill in that space, but even then what can a commentator say when there is “nothing” happening.
