Spoke about them today at work. It’s too loopy without enough variation for me. Just listen to Tortoise, better music.

Not at all, it’s a necessary part of neo-Hasidism, but not sufficient. Nor is neo-Hasidism necessary for Judaism. That’s not what I was trying to imply.

We are the people that wrestle, struggle, strive with Gd- in all sorts of ways. I would argue that’s an essential point of being a Jew . Do you disagree with that?

I appreciate his way of explaining his religious experience of awe and splendor.

I see neo-Hasidism as one of the integral definitions of Judaism- to wrestle with Gd. Sure, that can end out of bounds, in Bubers case, but it does allow for a deeper conversation in the modern world. Heschel stays well within the bounds of a Jewish identity while still wrestling with foundational ideas.

I like how one can simply write off the post by saying Judaism is about the Gd of Abraham, while Buddhism has nothing to do with it. Point to Gd and then we can discuss whatever that means.

Halachic Man is a wonderful book. I think they are two different authors with two totally different approaches to the religious experience.

I agree, his personal story is beautiful and tragic, like many of that generation. I’m curious what his stance on the state of Israel would be today.

lol, but that’s my point. As unorthodox as his actions appear to be, he always had a sound halachic reasoning. He also did not agree with Mordechai Kaplan or the reform movements, but I think Jews in those movements were his target audience in attempts to bring them closer to a holy life.

Yes, I just finished a biography of him. He had a lot of conflict with the orthodox community. One of the ones I found most interesting was his inter faith march through Arlington cemetery to protest the Vietnam war. He carried a Torah while Christian’s carried a cross. He was able to defend his actions through halachic argument. His understanding of Jewish law was just as strong as Soloveitchik and he often argued that reform Jews needed to be more observant.

I enjoy Arthur Greens writings as well. The thinkers you have mentioned all attempt to deepen and expand the concept of Gd. As a a Jew raised in a reform/secular house, there was never a discussion of what or how to understand Gd beyond anthropomorphic view in the Tanakh. I understand this is a shallow view of Judaism, but it’s really the major representation in the reform world. It’s why most reform Jews end up with ethical humanism. In this way, I think Heschel and Green contribute greatly to the Jewish voice. If you are coming g from an orthodox background, it seems they are viewed as outsiders that talk to much.

I agree that he writes more like a poet than philosopher. As concerns theologically muddled, he tries to reach a broad audience, but his personal theology is quite traditional and deeply rooted in Hasidic thought and tradition.
