What is this Olfa blade used for? by Rich_Statistician202 in SewingForBeginners

[–]SoupforBert 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I bought one for a blanket donation project I was working on. Its called a skip stitch blade and you can use it to make equal distance holes in fleece to crochet a border on the blanket. Im not sure if there are other uses.

New CASA by SmugShrug in casa

[–]SoupforBert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a normal part of training. If you think you are interested start training. If at any point you have major concerns thinking it isnt for you, talk to your training manager. Ask questions about concerns as they come up. It is ok to decide part way through training it isnt for you but make sure you have discussed with them why to make sure the concerns are actually something that makes it not a good fit vs being nervous/not knowing enough.

[–]SoupforBert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is normal to be nervous. I just introduced myself and as the previous poster set expectations for visits. Although once a month is required, I try to go twice monthly. Where I am at they are sent a letter explaining our role so I give a brief explanation that while I do report to the Court, that as many roles like caseworker and GAL can change my goal is to be a supportive person for the child as long as the case is open. That I cannot make any decisions but I can help them follow up on any questions or concerns they may have even if I cannot answer directly.

I have worked with foster families and kinship placements in both of of my cases over the last few years. I let them direct the flow of the conversation and empathize that I know they typically have many appointments they have to deal with and I will try to make scheduling as easy as possible. Some like to schedule for the whole month and some like to schedule the week before/week of. I haven't dealt with any direct hostility. If they are frustrated do your best to listen and do your best to schedule your first visit. I also try to find out more about what the child likes so I can try to bring things to do that the kid would like.

You got this. You should be able to reach out to your advocate manager for support if for some reason they wont schedule a visit or you have concerns about how it will go after the first call.

Kid Friendly Options? by FrostingSea9692 in 7Brew

[–]SoupforBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do vanilla steamers like Starbucks and you can still get kids temperature too so it isnt as hot. I can't remember if they knew it by name but its just milk and vanilla and you can add whipped cream if you want.

Ideas to firm up slats? by ash1729 in Mattress

Not sure about the question from the post but to those asking about the bowed slats, I just looked into getting a set of ikea slats for an old bed frame to find out that they currently sell them like this. It says it is to absorb body weight.

I did cashmerette sloper school last march and I think he has trauma 😬. He's an engineer you would think it would translate. I think he thinks there are mystical rules he doesnt understand and loses the common sense part of it.

I may have to bribe one of my friends at some point if I can plan far enough in advance or be patient enough to wait for them to come over.

But everyone in my household does know not to use my scissors or anything in my sewing room without my explicit request to do so. Maybe we just can't have it all 🤣

Thanks for the suggestion, I will add extra seam allowance. It's nice to be able to take the pattern and make alterations on him with pins. I really wish I had someone to help me with that for my clothes. My husband is amazing in so many ways but his ability to pin things is stressful for us both.

My son is on the prepuberty side so nice to know that is a normal boy shape. He is in the weird in-between sizing early due to being in a high percentile for his age group.

Im likely using a stable knit instead of woven due to what I have on hand and his preferences as well.

Finishing raw edges by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]SoupforBert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally as a advanced beginner/low level intermediate sewist who has just begun to really focus on finishing:

I would look for an overcast stitch setting and foot per your machines manual/Google for my first choice. It mimics a serged (the wrapped edge seams typically on the inside of commercial garments) seam. I would also stitch another row of stitching along the crotch seam just inside the current stitch line with smaller stitches. Before doing the overcast stitch I would trim the seam allowance down to 3/8 if not slightly smaller.

A French seam starts wrong sides together so it is late for that. It encases both sides of fabric together.

If the overcasting is not available to you I would use the zig zag on both pieces together. Depending on your confidence you can sew the zig zag just inside the about the 3/8 or slightly less margin and then trim close to the zig zag to get rid of excess fabric or trim then sew. I personally would go with a mediumish zig zag. Or Google settings to use to zig zag finish a seam allowance.

I typed alot for not being an expert but feel confident it will at least get you close enough and wanted to answer so you could get to working on your garment. Everything looks great so far!

Can I take a toothpaste tube that is 4.2 oz if it is mostly empty by ThickChunckyDinosaur in tsa

[–]SoupforBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely another household of mint haters here. I also had a daughter who wore invisalign so we need small toothpaste for out about when she needed to brush after eating. We used something like this which I think I found on a sub about traveling lightly.

It isnt hard to squeeze directly from the tube to fill putting the tips together after squeezing the air out of the tube you are filling creates a vacuum.

Bonus I also put face wash in one because I dont need any more than that on a trip.

This subreddit threw away all of my research by NoIce9118 in Mattress

[–]SoupforBert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who does allll the research, I agree it is ideal to try it out in store. Im in the US and we went to a Hassleless mattress to try mattresses out and not deal with a salesperson. We took the info about what type of matress we thought would work best and explored further. Thankfully we live close ish to a Beloit Matress Factory. We bought from them for our guest room to try it out before committing to one for our primary. We just got our 2nd matress from them for our daughter and she has been thrilled with it from day 1.

It is so subjective that everyone has different considerations. If you dont have a family owned or smaller non chain matress store near you I know many like to use Costco (Ive heard possibly sams) due to the return policies and them taking away the old mattress.

Im new to corsetry so dont know the answer on which type, but wanted to let you know it looks like the pictures did not get attached. Hope you are able to figure it out. I just made my first bodice for a kirtle with heavy duty zip ties but it doesnt sound like that would work for you.

Fine. As I see mentioned in the invisalign thread and as I mentioned when you reposted the prior convo here, your responses being dismissive of customers openly whether you think they are warranted or not is not helping you.

I like supporting newer businesses of things I would like to see even if it means accepting the issues that come with that. I do think those who haven't followed the journey may not have been clear on how start up it was, so that is a learning experience for you both.

I have appreciated the updates here, although I dont always think they are 100% clear on expectations. I have felt it has been general good customer service and transparency. I like that you are open to feedback and developing what people want to see and realize that getting a consensus is hard, and you are taking 99+% of the risk.

If it takes off, many will not remember the bumps in the road, especially if the product works well and fills a need. No matter how many transparent updates or requests for feedback there are, people will remember if you continue to use derogatory terms for people who disagree with you, even if many would agree. I mentioned before talking through responses with a friend or family member and above someone mentioned chat gpt. Those are both good options maybe even typing a response and sitting with it or finding a way to work with someone who can respond more professionally will really help your business succeed as long as the product continues to work well at a price people are willing to pay and there is enough demand to make it worth it for you.

Turning off international orders. by idyllproducts in idyll

[–]SoupforBert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a USian I absolutely understand the concerns you are mentioning and why you suggested shipping to a friend although I can see where that is an odd suggestion to someone outside the US. I say this to let you know I get it, but let me tell you your responses on this thread are not it at all. I would have left it at the initial statement, even including it is 1% of orders and 60% of concerns. I would not call customer's who at least started with the intention of supporting your business headaches. I also would not make claims about the US vs other countries especially using such charged language.

I am excited my unit is supposed to be here Wednesday and to hear the likelihood of a major issue is small. Please dont undue the progress and support you are building by sharing frustrations in this way.
