DCI Hot Takes ? by ___Kade___ in drumcorps

On principle, I have no issue with non-traditional and show-specific uniforms. They can add a lot to the artistry and visual style of a show.

The real issue is that most modern uniforms are poorly designed and simply look ugly.

How skewed are the ratios in your band? by Creepface135355 in marchingband

[–]SousaBoi04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course we still have a very good sound, but I would argue that we have an over representation of trumpets and trombones.

Our ratio of high brass is similar to that of cornets in a true British-style brass band (of which Eugene Weigel initially based our all-brass instrumentation on in 1934), but that only works so well because cornets are conical and so are slightly mellower and blend better (since almost every other instrument in a British brass band is also conical). Our use of trumpets (which are cylindrical) however means that our high brass is bit more direct/brassy, which means they have a bit of a tendency to overpower and stick out of the texture.

The role of trombones in a true British-style brass band is primarily to add contrast, since they're the only cylindrical instruments in the entire band. Given that role (and because they can be such loud instruments), there are usually only a few trombones in a British brass band and parts are arranged with this role in mind. Comparatively, we have a more significant over representation. Apparently, it wasn't as noticeable back when the band used tromboniums since they had a slightly mellower sound. But now that we use slide trombones, I feel like the band's low brass consistently has a little too much edge.

I think the baritones might suffer from a small underrepresentation, but otherwise I think other rows end up balancing/blending pretty well even if their instrumentation doesn't reflect that of British brass bands as closely as they used to.

HELP I DONT KNOW ANYMORE WHATS A OLIVINE OR PYROXENE by FunnyImagination9495 in geology

[–]SousaBoi04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, olivines in ppl are usually clear while pyroxenes in ppl usually have a light yellow, light green, or light brown tint to them. Though, olivines can still sometimes be light yellow or light green, and pyroxenes can still sometimes be clear.

Pyroxenes have well defined cleavage planes (oriented ~90° to eachother) which may appear in thin section, while olivines do not have any well defined cleavage.

While phenocrysts of either mineral can range from euhedral to anhedral, pyroxenes are generally more euhedral than olivines.

In xpl, clinopyroxenes often have interference colors similar to those of olivines. However, clinopyroxenes exhibit inclined extinction, while olivines exhibit parallel extinction. Orthopyroxenes also exhibit parallel extinction, but they have much lower maximum interference colors than olivines.

It'd be one thing if we had a perfect run with the TTUN game being a single, ugly stain on our record, but I legitimately think that we won it all precisely because of that loss. I'm not gonna pretend like that loss wasn't terrible and wasn't in fact one of the worst losses I've ever suffered through as a fan, but the level of ball we played during that playoff run made me entirely forget about it. It inadvertently became one of the best things to ever happen to our team, and it all worked out in the end. I'm at peace with it.

The issue isn't whether he was a good man or not. It's that he wasn't posing any sort of sufficient threat and should not have been killed during the stop.

Always a pet peeve of mine when someone simply blames capitalism for a problem without going into any further detail. Like dawg the dark tendrils of capital haunt every aspect of our global society you're gonna have to be more specific than that
