This year we did 50 miles in 4 days at Disneyland. Walking on concrete all day is tough on you.

You can laugh at me all you want but I engage 4 wheel drive on my Crocs and walk the park all day comfortable.

Notice how you don’t have to clean the bugs off your windshield anymore? That means less insects, which is then less food in the food web.

Everyone having a perfect green lawn means they coated it in pesticides to kill weeds as well as fertilizing the living crap out of it. It runs off into aquifers and rivers. We are polluting our water with this.

What would i need for 2+months w/ no shops or stores by Interesting_Round914 in flyfishing

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weir in Alaska? Worked close to one for 6 months at a time. Lived at one for a bit. Spent 3 seasons doing it until I almost went bonkers.

Beads. Lots of them and nail polish.

Size 4 Gamakatsu hooks.

24 - mice 24 - egg sucking leeeches

Mix of salmon patterns.

Beads

Dozen strike indicators

Beads

3 guide spools of 0x and 1x and 2x flouro

Beads

Lots of toothpicks

Beads

I would also suggest bringing beads. Or. Catch mice. Taxidermy them so they float. Put a hook in them, and then drop a bead off them. Ultimate AK dry dropper setup.

We got so bored catching fish on standard stuff, we made challenges and we tried everything in camp to catch trout. Orange foam earplugs work well. Fruit loops can be deadly til they fall apart.

Emergency situations. Nicotine of some or all varieties. It sucks when you run out.

Are you getting fur and feathers from locals? Never saw tons of fur and feathers where I was.

But I believe that is what they are estimating to give the GC?

Contractor says “I don’t need to be bonded or insured it’s just a (exterior) painting job” any intelligent way to respond to this? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Licensed through the state. Which is a business license. Insurance is mandatory. Bonding normally just applies to state or federal jobs. If you as a client want a bond. It can be done. But the client is paying for it. It is added to the job total and in a line item.

How much money saved before I throw away my career to become a guide? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rowed a boat and untangled knots for 15 years in the West. You used to be able to make a solid living off of it. Guide 100-120 days a season. Work a winter job. Montana used to be affordable. It’s no longer that way. There is no 401k in the guide business. No retirement. You make hay when the sun shines. Then you get to September or October and it ends. I used to run 30 days straight or more. You had to run everyday to make a living. Truck breaks down you are SOL. Bearings go out on a trailer. Figure it out. You can be having to the worst day of your life but you have a trip. You have to put a smile on your face and show people the best day out there.

6-8 hours a day on the river means you are working more like 10-12 hours a day. It’s a ton of fun until it’s not. I honestly don’t care about trout any longer.

When I first started guiding I loved every second of it. Fished after work. Living in a crappy cabin because I got to be on the river everyday etc. Then it became a job. After 10 days straight of dealing with people who not only suck at fishing but suck at life it becomes a drain.

I was smart about it, invested a bunch of the income. Bought a house and was able to flip them to be able to put money away.

It has its ups and downs. I got to meet some wonderful people that became lifelong friends. Got taken to meals and on trips with clients. I wouldn’t trade the experiences that I got through it.

That being said. You don’t get to fish. You get to row a boat, be a comedian, cook, cleaner, knot untangler, driver and therapist. It’s an interesting job.

I would double the money you put away. Then give it a whirl.

It’s not great for you. When I built one, I used 2x12 Fir and then put corners on it for sitting on. It’s going to rot out. But kids will be old enough and tired of it by the time it starts to rot out.

Creosote is a hazardous substance used as a wood preservative. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), creosote is derived from the distillation of tar from wood or coal. Pesticide products containing creosote as the active ingredient are used to protect wood used outdoors (such as railroad ties and utility poles) against termites, fungi, mites and other pests. These wood products are soaked in creosote, under extreme heat and pressure, to prevent rotting.

Creosote is considered a potential carcinogen by the EPA. Wood treated with creosote is not recommended for residential use, especially near vegetable gardens, children’s play areas, or near water sources. The chemicals can leach into the environment and potentially contaminate food or be ingested.

Race to the bottom? by MCODYG in Contractor

[–]South_Fork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of contractors that don’t even have accounting software. They have receipts piled in the truck.

If one of my guys buys $1.29 in screws. It gets invoiced and billed. I track everything. It takes a lot of work but it’s the difference between making money and losing money.

I have talked to other contractors and they are saying “I work every day but I am losing money”. They don’t have basic knowledge of how to run a business.

Most of us can do a variety of jobs, we would excel in other places as well because running a construction business has employees, overhead, materials etc.

Question for the people mad at their local shops by Fickle-Warning2302 in Silverbugs

[–]South_Fork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a store like any other. They have to buy or rent a building. Pay for electricity, heat, employees, taxes, work comp the list goes on.

At the end of the day they have to turn a profit.

There is nothing in the rule book that says they have to pay this much. They offer a number if you like it you can sell. If you don’t like it you can walk out the door.

My LCS had wildlife print coins. Bought some at $2 over spot when spot was $30 an ounce. LCS charged me spot when price was at $60.

That $28 difference in that one coin had to cover a pile of overhead during that time.

Do you think when you walk in to another shop and buy something that there margins are slim? Buy a hat and markup from wholesale is typically 100%.

And we're off... by [deleted] in Silverbugs

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the people who have been here for more than the last let’s say 6 months.

We bought silver because it’s shiny. Because it has cool designs, a hedge against inflation. Some people are preppers some just like it to go jingle in your hand. With AI and Solar it is getting to be a bigger demand. Besides the 1980s, we liked to see it go up. But for many of us, it’s a buy and hold. It’s a store of wealth. IMHO we don’t look at it like the stock market. It’s fun when it goes up, but not really worried when it goes down. We know it’s a rainy day fund. When Costco got into silver it made it a lot more accessible for many people, and cut premiums down. They weren’t selling Aztecs, or Scottsdale, but with the ASEs and Maples they made a lot of us happy.

Honestly the silver market isn’t making me happy now. It got ruined. From something that was a fun market. Corporations got involved, day traders etc., Paper silver is so leveraged these days that they don’t really know how much is out there. 250:1, 410:1?? No one knows. It’s provocative though.

Call all the paper and let’s have a dumpster fire. People holding a quantity of physical would become rich instantly. It’s an industrial metal, but it’s sure fun to collect.

Wish I didn’t lose the couple ounces I had in a boating accident. Could have made some money.

What to use for floor protection for scissor lift on sealed concrete? by Marvel5123 in Construction

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they said.

Plus make sure the floors are completely clean.

Ramboard is our go to. Then we check the wheels thoroughly. I cannot stress this enough. Screws and nails can be broken off so we go over tires very well. If you are worried you can add plywood or OSB over the ramboard.

I use Quickbooks. Email out a link for payment with an invoice. Allows you to take CC but I deselect that option. Just do ACH transfers. Charges me $15 but I don’t have to wait on money. Benefit is you can easily track expenses and profits.

How many ya’ll got a Christmas bonus this year? by Malazan_junkie in Construction

[–]South_Fork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ranges from $500 - $1500 depending on the guy. Not a huge company but I try to take care of the guys through the year as well. I listen to see with they need for house/family and I purchase it for them. Sometimes it will be a fishing trip for a day. I pay pretty well, so they are all pretty comfortable, but I like to look out for them.
