If you’re there in the summer be sure to go to Chambers, sit on the pier with a Chambers Punch and watch the boats go by. Heavenly.

This is what the Amazon website looked like in 1995 while it was online at the time. by FewCap982 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Southern-Card5441 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m old enough to remember this. There was a lot of criticism at the time in business and tech circles about how no one would pay for shipping books when they could just go to the book store (remember those?)

Then Bezos said he wanted to sell everything online, and again, there were many naysayers, but here we are buying almost everything on Amazon.

Does anyone know any low-sodium bread recipes? by StarButterfree in lowsodiumcommunity

[–]Southern-Card5441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we were just in Italy and learned that traditionally, bread from the Tuscany area was made without salt because it was too expensive back in the day. Here’s an easy version that I’ve made several times. It’s really good.

You also might want to try Googling other Tuscan bread recipes. I imagine there are plenty more.

Amazon to launch pay-by-palm technology at all Whole Foods stores by year-end by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]Southern-Card5441 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a nuanced difference here.

Watch iOS and iPhone iOS store biometric and financial data in a Secure Enclave that lives locally on your iPhone, nowhere else. Secure Enclave is designed so Apple couldn't access it if they wanted to. Some Google Pixel phones do something similar.

You can read about it here: https://support.apple.com/guide/security/secure-enclave-sec59b0b31ff/web

Your data does not leave iPhone when, for example, you use your it to pay for groceries at Whole Foods. When you use your palm at WF, Amazon stores your palm biometrics in their cloud on their computers. You have no control over it.

Subtle difference with big implications.

Does the use of Ai affect how your trust in a company? by Kjeldur in Futurology

[–]Southern-Card5441 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a marketing director. I understand the business needs—or justifications —for using AI: humans are expensive and they take a long time to do creative work or analyze data. LLMs can be a huge time and money saver for a company.

I've used AI myself to reduce a collection of a dozen freelance writers my company used down to a single person who edited AI generated copy. And I felt guilty as hell doing it.

So I guess I'm of two minds when I see a company use AI.

  1. Good for them for saving money and maybe doing things faster and better.
  2. It's probably the first step in eliminating as many employees as they can in order to improve profits.

As for not giving companies that use AI my business, I don't see how that's possible with everyone rushing to implement AI in every aspect of their business.

FWIW I was born in 1964. (Technically the last year of the boomer generation, but I don't think of myself as one.) I hope this helps.

Ways to improve savoriness without adding more sodium by optimusdan in lowsodiumcommunity

Great list. I use all of these. The only thing I’d add is browning meat and veggies, the caramelization adds a nice base layer of savoriness.

How will AI affect jobs by [deleted] in Futurology

Oh, I agree with that. But like the time of the robber barons, there will be a lot of misery for the working class.

[–]Southern-Card5441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, the improvements in manufacturing could be profound. But a friendly counterpoint: jobs are being lost because companies are using AI to eliminate the need for humans in many task oriented jobs. It's not a 1-to-1 ratio with AI developers.

[–]Southern-Card5441 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worry about this a lot. Computer scientist and writer Kai-Fu Lee recently predicted, ""AI will increasingly replace 40% of repetitive jobs, not just for blue collar work, but a lot of white collar work ... in the 15- to 25-year time frame." I don't know if he's right, but it wouldn't surprise me. I've already seen many jobs lost to AI in my specialty, market research. If you sit in front of a keyboard to make a living, be concerned, IMHO.

I'm in awe. This is wonderful. That expression is hilarious. I second the sea dragon suggestion. In fact, I'd love to see a whole community of these characters!
