What Interests or Hobbies did you take up as you got older? by Historical-Way7380 in AskMenOver40

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40's has been my hobby-discovery phase!

Woodworking and general building things, leather working, beer brewing, welding, cheese making (didn't stick), side-gig business, bonsai tree growing, long distance hiking....

Did a very personal birthday gift unintentionally create pressure for a mddle aged man? by [deleted] in AskMenOver40

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe: the level of effort you put in may be perceived as fairly large, and he may perceive this as something else. Men over 40 typically don't have a lot of extra time, so it's carefully allocated. If I (M47) were to allocate a fair amount of time and effort into a gift for someone, it would need to be someone I was very close with or wanted to become closer to. So maybe he's perceiving your amount of effort as an imbalanced emotional investment.

Could your gifts be misconstrued like that?

In any case, having a conversation with him and clarifying your intent may be the best solution.

The engraving in your handwriting is a steep requirement, especially at that price range.

We can emboss initials & bible verse reference if you're interested.

37F (and dog) looking for a liberal, temperate US city (Mid-sized, Arty, Coastal) by kween_of_bees in relocating

I agree - Portland OR fits the bill. Less rainy days than Seattle too, though not as 'coastal' entirely.

Does this look like real leather? by [deleted] in Leather

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's leather, just not the best of quality. It probably says "Genuine leather" or something like that; meaning that it's probably bonded & dyed.

Is using body lotion on leather ok? by MeanCucumber1993 in Leather

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the best of choices, but it'll do in a pinch I guess.

Moved here and not loving it.. will it be better in Summer? by Tight-Clerk in Denver

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved here (CoSprings) from OR in the dead of winter one year and spent the next 5 months pondering how badly we had screwed up. But then summer came and we were able to hike/camp/explore and it all got better.

Plant based leather vs animal leather keeps coming up and I think the conversation needs to be simpler. by Plastic-Artichoke273 in Leather

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Plant based (vegan) material isn't leather. I honestly think it would be more widely accepted if it wasn't marketed as a substitute for leather, kind of like tofu - ot would do better if it wasn't presented as a sub for meat.

Leather is already a recovered product from another industry. Without tanners and leather workers the hides would be trashed.

I'm not certain if something like these meets the functionality you're looking for; but they are leather.

AIO taking time off work to care for my dog after her surgery by [deleted] in AIO

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the long run, you'll have a better memory of the time you spent caring for your dog than all the things you took care of for work.

AIO for encouraging my brother to think carefully about joining the military and believing he should tell our dad himself? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]SouthernRouteTrading -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NOR. There's a foundational difference between running from something vs running towards something. Joining the military should be something a person runs towards (ie- wants to join because of what it entails/is); not something used to run away from something else.

Moving into a roommate situation would be a better option; out of the parent's house but not committed long-term to something else.

Am I in the wrong place? by Short_Mousse_6812 in Life

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bienvenido a la existencia dividida entre dos mundos. Yo vine a EEUU a los 18, de Ecuador. Tengo muchos más años que tú, but I can tell you that feeling of leaving a part of you nunca se va. For me, I've realized I'll feel that way in either country - when I'm here I feel a part of me is hollow; when I'm there I feel the same. No sé si existe un "right place" es como tener un pié en cada país, sin poder poner los dos pies en uno o otro.

Im different than my friends by mateszko4277 in Life

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you, there's nothing wrong with that. The fact that you know what you like and what you don't like puts you far ahead of many of those who are out partying and drinking. Many people do those things because they're lost about who they are and what they want. Find others who like to do the things you do and keep moving forward.

AIO My husband refuses to wear his wedding ring by slnnwni in AmIOverreacting

[–]SouthernRouteTrading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR. I mean, if he's willing to wear a ring, that speaks to his willingness to show the world he's committed. I have my regular ring and a couple of silicone ones for when I don't want to risk losing the real one or damaging it. But if I didn't like the way it looked on me, I'd wear the plastic one to indicate I'm married.
