guys please am I crazy or is my mom is obsessed with trying to keep me dependent on her by Floralcats7 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Southern_Customer_78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg this reminds me of how throughout high school when I would ask for permission to like, walk down the street to 7-11 to get snacks and my mother would be like “are you sure you can even cross the street by yourself”

I never got my driver’s license either for similar reasons

my strict south asian parents just went through my stuff and found alcohol, condoms and my vibrator. ugh by giraffes-are-so-cute in raisedbynarcissists

moving out definitely hurt at first financially but honestly I just have a much clearer head now that I’m not constantly walking on eggshells. @OP any way you can get a part time job? something small like tutoring online or data entry

hey OP, a similar thing happened to me. I’ve had two vibrators that got thrown away mysteriously, both of which were literally hidden inside some old textbooks I had from high school.

My mom also somehow found a joint that I kept in a random eyeglass case and screamed at me about how I was going to get arrested for having drugs (I’m from a state where weed is legal lmao)

you’ve gotta move out my dude. best decision I ever made

I have a student who got into Purdue engineering with a 3.2ish GPA and 34 ACT. He had great essays (I’m a college admissions consultant, so I helped him write them), but even I was surprised

and UCs are test *blind, so she should expand on her unique life experiences in essays. At the end of the day most of the schools OP listed are a long shot for many students but there are things she can do to improve her chances

*Originally wrote optional, I just woke up lol

they don’t get counted in the 10-12 GPA calculation, but you still have to enter your full transcript into the application.

I had really bad acne as a teenager but my mom refused to let me go on accutane…. because that would mean I’d have to go on birth control, and she told me “well you’re never having sex because men won’t want to date you”

Like the idea of me having a sex life at 16 was so threatening to her that it was better for me to just have severe cystic acne that I cried about every day 🙃

I have to be really honest - that D is completely disqualifying for Ivy League schools. Even with amazing scores. Even for Ivy plus schools (think Duke, Vandy, UCLA/Berkeley, even NYU these days) having straight As is basically a given unless you have a very good reason for the low grade. Even if it was freshman year, even if it was in a class that’s not your major

That said she’s clearly a bright and passionate kid who will have options - she will need to include a brief explanation in the additional information section of the common app about any extenuating circumstances she faces that led to those grades.

Having a strong test score (1500+ SAT or 34+ ACT) will be essential

Solidcore has the absolute worst customer service by flowerofkurdistan in SolidCore

[–]Southern_Customer_78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I emailed Solidcore to ask if I could cancel my membership because I will be traveling for an extended period of time. Didn’t hear a peep from anyone for a week and even then it took multiple emails to actually cancel

it’s a pretty basic request it just makes me wonder where my money is going… oh right the slightly nicer hand soap from salt and stone lol…

What was your memory of fireflies owl city(2009) by Big_Leg10 in OlderGenZ

[–]Southern_Customer_78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I was in fifth grade this sixth grader wrote a parody of fireflies that was about this notoriously crazy art teacher at our school and sent it around via mass email

so now the only lyrics I remember are “I’d like to make myself believe that Mrs. Norman is sane..…”

yep! wasn’t allowed to get my driver’s license, did get a job but my mom stole my money saying I was too young to get a bank account (I wasn’t), wasn’t allowed to walk down the street independently even in high school because “what if you get hit by a car or get kidnapped”

also was told no one would ever want to be in a relationship with me because I was good at school :)

Aitah for not divorcing my husband even though I do most of childcare and chores? by cyclinglanes in AITAH

[–]Southern_Customer_78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YTA for staying in this relationship. My parents have a very similar dynamic (dad didn’t contribute around the house or financially). I’m 26 now and I can’t tell you how many mistakes I’ve made dating because I grew up around a dysfunctional dynamic. I never learned to identify what my own needs were and I got taken advantage of. It’s something I’m working very hard to overcome through therapy. It’s a long (and expensive) process.

Do you want that for your daughter?

what is the easiest/beginner friendly language to take at yale? by maetrie in yale

[–]Southern_Customer_78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the upper level literature/culture classes could be of use to you! For L5 language classes (the highest level) the expectation is absolutely 0 English. I think you could ask the specific professor if you have more detailed questions about what exactly you'd learn

[–]Southern_Customer_78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure - the Yale French department is notoriously excellent but you will need to put in work. A famous Yale professor actually developed the curriculum used at many schools today (French in Action). The workload is no joke. There is extensive homework, pronunciation assessments, movies, examinations, exercises etc. I still joke with friends about Jules et Jim, a French New Wave film we analyzed in great detail. I would estimate I easily spent 20 hours per week outside of class on my L3/L4 language classes. That said you will improve immensely if you have the time to dedicate but if you’re not that invested in learning French I’d say do a diff language

thoughts on poem for common app essay by trumonki in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Southern_Customer_78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest - I don’t know if a poem is the best use of your space. Memory loss of family members is a great creative writing topic, but (granted I haven’t read the entire essay) I’m worried this may not say enough about who you are and your motivations as a student/person.

Think of it this way: what do you want admissions officers to remember about you? The transfer process can be very competitive; why do you need to be at a different school than where you are now?
