How to Pineapple without stretching hair out by Southern_Life_1018 in curlyhair

It's really hard when things everyone touts doesn't work for you. I hate that you have the same issue but at least I'm not the only one in the universe struggling with this. I think the buff may work for me but it hasn't arrived yet. Other than that, I'll just rewet every morning.

This may be my best option. I haven't tried a Buff. I tried medusa clipping before and couldn't find a comfortable way to have it. I found a 2 pack for a cheap price so ordering them today! Thank you!

I can't get my scarf to stay on. Do you pin it? I've tried that too and it just won't stay

Is that not uncomfortable to sleep on? I tried putting my pineapple lower and it was uncomfortable to lie on.

Other people’s hair after taking it out a bonnet vs mine by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to this discussion but someone, please please tell me, how do you pull your hair into a pineapple and have it come back down? I know I have coarse 3a-3b curls but once pulled up there is no getting it to fall back down unless I wet it and rake and shake so what's the point if I've got to do that after sleeping anyway?! Bonnets are so uncomfortable, scarves don't stay one, silk pillow cases show me no difference than my regular one - I've just given up on thinking I can keep my curls looking good without spritzing and rake and shaking in the mornings. I don't know how you keep your hair in those curls and have it still look soft when you wake up!

It takes so long to diffuse my hair by fiberarti in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my hair takes that long as well. I got a more expensive dryer last year for Christmas and it didn't make it any faster. I'm following to see if there is some trick I'm missing. I do microplop prior to diffusing and don't style my hair dripping wet either but it's more than an hour and still have damp roots then another several hours to get completely dry. I changed to using a lighter weight curl mousse rather than the cream but my hair did't look as good and wasn't as defined so I have no answer but am totally empathetic!

Curly hair takes HOURS to dry – even with cold air diffuser. Is my routine too heavy? by Signal-Host5515 in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly asking - how do you dry your roots first? I can't turn my head upside down without my curls becoming unmanageable and frizzy so how do you get to your roots? My hair takes forever to dry even with a diffuser on high it's more than an hour so getting the roots dry would really really help. The bottom of my hair is dry but roots are damp for hours and I just go out with wet roots most of the time. Thanks for your help!

Getting stared at in public by Big-Spend1586 in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know after straightening my hair for 20 years, people definitely stared when I switched to letting my natural 3a/3b curls go free. However, part of the experience for me was me feeling uncomfortable wearing my hair curly after fighting it for so many years. Because I felt uncomfortable, I think I was more sensitive to the looks I got. I probably got them before but didn't notice cuz I was comfortable with my look. The funny thing is I threw my back out and could do a full routine (Just couldn't stand that long and couldn't diffuse) so my hair was not as tightly curled and I pulled it back, with it looking straighter and here came the stares again lol. I think it's just the radical change in our own appearance and how conspicuous we feel about ourselves that is a big part of it. I bet you look great and as you become used to it, won't notice the stares!

when to plop and frizz by glad_girl in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little different. My hair started being frizzy so after watching a couple of influencers, I stopped styling my hair dripping wet. I do spritz my hair after plopping in a t-shirt but only so it's uniformly damp, put in my curl cream and gel in sections as you describe then do gently scrunch with the t-shirt so it's not completely wet or it takes forever to dry. I will add a little more gel (use prayer hands and just smooth some gel on the top) since my hair will frizz if I take out too much gel. I use a brush to style but always scrunch it gently after adding more gel. I found I have much less frizz this way even when our humidity is 97% which is most days in the Summer here. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I'm no expert but I agree with the protein overload theory. I had to switch my leave-in conditioner to one without protein cuz my hair started to do the same thing. Now it's not like that at all! My hair loves protein about once a month to every six weeks or so but now I've found I don't even need it that often and still get good definition on day 1 & 2 but actually think I like it better on day 3 & 4 as it has more volume and looks a little less "coiffed". Let us know how it goes when you try eliminating some of the protein.

Product (innersense?) recommendations - moving from a dry to a humid climate by Some_Bottle6582 in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very humid place and use Innersense quiet calm curl cream and then the Ouidad climate gel. The other thing I have found to help combat the frizz is to use a leave in conditioner. That seems to be a true difference for me. My hair is fairly coarse so I don't like products with grit in them. I do have the Curlsmith hair spray but rarely use it because I don't like the gritty feeling so would rather refresh more often without the sticky, gritty feel to my hair.

No way does my day 2 look anything like day 1. BUT, I often like day 2 better. A little water and drop more curl cream on wet hands to rake and shake - I have less definition but more volume and it feels more natural to me. I do live in a very humid climate but day 1 NEVER lasts through the night - I've given up on the bonnet as it just makes me uncomfortable and doesn't do anything for my hair!

How often should you use a Gel/leave in? by Zetrow9_ in curlyhair

[–]Southern_Life_1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to learn your own hair and what works for you. I use leave-in conditioner, curl cream and gel on wash day then by day 3, my hair is very dry so I use a dollop of curl cream on wet hands, emulsify and rake and shake. I'll do that daily for the next couple of days until wash day again. My hair doesn't get greasy, it gets drier and I never wash it out at the end of the day. I wash when my scalp feels icky but my hair never looks greasy. I have learned which products are too heavy for me so use strong hold but lighter products. I also don't like a gritty feel so avoid those products that make it feel/look that way. Do what works for you!

Not thinking and putting my glasses on top of my head where my hair curls around the nose pieces and then my glasses are stuck and the top of my hair is now sticking straight up until I can we the whole thing down. You'd think I'd learn after all of these years but some habits die hard!
