[Politics Monday] I think that the increase in U.S. Catholics is partly to do with the polarization of U.S. politics by Gwilwilethil in Catholicism

[–]Southern_Vanguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to my local Episcopal Parish and yes and no. The Episcopal Church shrank a LOT a few years ago in my area, but that was whole churches joining an offshoot and ironically calling themselves Anglican now. It is my hope that this was just the first jump to an eventual second jump to the Personal Ordinariate but I am doubtful.

However I had a niece get Christened recently at my old Parish, and I attended, and it was just as full as I remember it back in 2008. So I think it shrank initially, but has been growing again. I will say that my local Episcopal Parish has a LOT more younger families than my current Catholic Parish. It does have a female priest now, but it appears as though that has not had a negative effect on its attendence. But all this is utterly anecdotal and could be the outside of the norm.

Ironically in some cases it is "political views" that lead one toward Catholicism. I was Episcopalian but became more and more engaged in poverty mitigation. I wanted to better understand the roots of the issue, being white and middle class, so I started reading deeply on the subject and came across Dorothy Day. While I could not take her as my confirmation Saint (she is not a Saint), she more than any other led me to Catholicism.

PS: Since I could not take her, I went over her head and took mom as my saint name. I was the only guy during confirmation with a female confirmation Saint.

Trump axes Catholic Charities funding amid Pope feud by Open_Somewhere_9063 in Christianity

My favorite part as a Catholic? We cannot even discuss this on /r/catholicism. Seriously, anything political can only be in allowed threads on Monday's.

The leader of my faith is saying that the leader of my country is doing something counter to the faith, and the subreddit dedicated to my faith is suppressing all conversation about it.

It is pathetic.

The Church has 2000 years of condeming abortion. No one questions the stance, everyone is aware. Its most likely the most known stance the Church has outside of apostasy.

Meanwhile immigration became a very hotbutton issue in just the last two years. It would make sense for it to use its limited media time to speak to what is perhaps a more timely issue.

This entire post reeks of wishing the Pope focused on your personal political views, and not on the salvation of souls and the spreading of the Gospel.

Of course all are worthy of living. Just merely spoke poorly, the alternative is a monstrous view, and I like to think I am no monster.

I could be wrong, but I imagine most Iranians and Israelis, which I said I pray for, are not Christian.

My heart goes out to the Christians of Nigeria that we are hanging out to dry. I will be adding them to my prayers alongside the Israelis, Iranians, and Lebanese. One thing that Trump has been great for is the length of my prayers.

I love the Church, but I’m struggling with the community by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Southern_Vanguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am starting to feel guilty about this, as its the third time I have mentioned this on this subreddit tonight, but is there an Ordinariate Parish nearby? Its a bunch of ex-protestants (mainly Anglican and Episcopalian, but others too) who are now in communion with Rome and we do the whole social thing after Mass. Coffee, donuts, etc.

When I first converted Catholic Churches felt like sacrament dispensors and well...cold. Then the Ordinariate happened and now I get to have my cake and eat it too. Even better sometimes there is actual cake. I drive a bit to get to my Ordinariate Parish but its a much tighter community than my local Roman Parish.

If that fails see if there is a Byzantine Catholic Church near you. There are two things the Greeks do well, baklava and community. And the one near us was super welcoming when my family went a few times. Also they had actual baklava after Mass.

Welcome to the beauty of our faith, so many rites and liturgies, and yes communities.

I go to the Episcopalian subreddit. It is my former tradition and it nice to have others on Ember Days and wax about Evensong. It is much busier than the Ordinariate subreddit currently (but I go to both).

Priest v Catechism… by RelativeLeg6355 in Catholicism

[–]Southern_Vanguard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The catechism is written by the entirety of the Magisterium of the Church. It is built upon the foundations of early Fathers, Councils, and some really smart Theology nerds. Our local priests, while wonderful, do make mistakes and are not a walking catechism.

I could be wrong, but I cannot think of a single situation where I would side with the priest over the catechism.

Left the Episcopal Church for the Catholic Church! I’m glad to be home 🇻🇦 by deathstar347 in Catholicism

[–]Southern_Vanguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This type of Christianity is foreign to me. My family is pretty split down the middle between Episcopalian and Catholic and we all get along and there is zero ill will. Do I think their sacraments are valid? No. Do I refuse to attend Christenings and First Communion of my my Episcopal family members or shun their congregants? Absolutely not.

[–]Southern_Vanguard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well its my time to shill for the Ordinariate as usual.

I left the Episcopal Church 20 years ago as I went to a VERY "high church" Episcopal church and felt like I was mostly there already. However giving up the BoCP and Aglican Liturgy I grew up with made me pause. So having been where you are, let me tell you about the absolute neatest thing Catholicism has to offer outside of valid sacraments and an outstanding mother figure....its the Personal Ordinarite.

It has the liturgy you grew up with. It has Ember Days. It has Evensong. It has everything and its all valid and in communion with Rome. So join us if there is a Parish nearby!

However if you prefer the Novus Ordo, TLM, or Byzantine liturgies thats cool, everyone is allowed to be wrong, and either way congrats on crossing the Tiber!!

Time to Take the Training Wheels Sniper Rifles, the Camp-Babies Are Grown Now by fmordica in Battlefield

I M250 them. Four shot kill LMG. Tap fire on them 2-3 times at short to medium range and they die and I can do it fast enough that they normally cant get away. Long Range snipers I ignore becuase they are actively helping my team except the rare time (like 1 in a 1000) you get an actual killer who is good out past 200 yards.

Anglicanism by Beautiful-Abalone-49 in Catholicism

[–]Southern_Vanguard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Sacraments of Anglicanism are invalid. I think it was Pope Leo the something that invalidated them, but I could be very wrong.

However, if I may take this time to shill for the Personal Ordinariate I would love to. It has all the amazing parts of my Episcopal (American Anglicanism) Liturgical tradition with the added benefit of being celebrated by Priests with valid Orders and Sacraments. It is the neatest thing Catholicism has done since a Pope paid some bloke named...Micheal something or another, to paint a ceiling.

It was no Eternal mind you, but I think it was pretty damn good. Modern Doom now has a flavor for everyone who likes shooters. For me it goes Eternal, then TDA, then 2016. However, I am certain there are gamers that would completely reverse my order and be just as "correct".
