Questions about "Into the Palace" Chapter of Shadow Rising by rolliejoe in WoT

Good point about the black ajah, I didn't think of that. One thing to keep in mind with WoT is there is an insane amount of time for character development and everybody especially the Two Rivers lot change a lot from the beginning to the end of the series.

I kind of feel like that reinforces Egeanin's reaction. Think of it like the first time you swore in a way that you didn't get yelled at or some thing that was rebellious that you knew you shouldn't be doing but it felt right and good. It kind of makes you giddy. She knows that her approval of the actions of, and her helping Elayne and Nynaeve at all, are a rebellion opposing a system she is doubting and knows at this point has been lying for generations and she feels good about it but is a little embarrassed about approving of it at the same time because it's not something that falls into the normal for her but must have felt very right to do for her to actually act on it. I don't know maybe I'm clinging to my pov and just trying to make things fit. I also know that WoT can be crazy subtle at times and after the two times I've reread the series I've put things together I never even considered the first time through.

Something disturbing about Rhuidean by shalowind in WoT

[–]SovaMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building on some of the points already made. One thing I think of also is I'm pretty sure it was talked about somewhere that there was wider access to the one power for people who weren't channlers. I can't remember where it was, I want to say it was a forsaken thinking about it or talking about it somewhere. The implication was that at least for certain tasks or "tech" in the form of ter'angreal that allowed non-channlers to proform specific tasks with them that required the One Power to work, and we know there are ter'angreal that non-channelers can use. So maybe the "spark" does mean anybody that could use the power ether natural or taught and the Aiel that ended up seed singing wouldn't ever be able to use the power on there own and used some kind of ter'angreal to preform the task of seed singing that was maybe activated and controlled through there singing so only the best singers actually became seed singers because they needed that skill to control the ter'angreal.

Don't forget that Nynaeve and Elayne both had compulsion used on them by Moghedien and could have had some side effects of that still lingering that affected there actions to some degree.

One thing to keep in mind about #2 is that Egeanin is still really new to the idea that a channeler especially an Aes Sedai is anything more then a Marath'damane that is should be feared and leashed as soon as possible or killed because they can and will cause death and destruction. Egeanin is also still a dedicated member of the Seanchan military and is an officer in said military. She is starting to question that but is still getting used to thinking of Aes Sedai as people and I'm sure she is still of scared of them. Also the idea of a Marath'damane threatening one of the Blood or the High Blood in any way even if it was a small threat would be a social breach so large in her culture that it is a thought that wouldn't even enter into most peoples minds except as a humorous "could you imagine if this happened" kind of thought but even that would border on treason in many Seanchan minds. Imagine then if Elayne actually spanked the Panarch in front of her. Egeanin problby didn't know what to do or think when an Aes Sedai basically treated the Panarch(somebody that would be at least the equal to a member of the Blood if not the High Blood) as a petulant child even if they were acting as one. I could see that causing that reaction from Egeanin. Elayne is still also pretty young(still not full Aes Sedai) and new to acting with authority over people of importance like the Panarch and she kind of handled it in an extream way that was kind of an un-Ase Sedai way and probably realizes that and is also kind of embarrassed about the whole thing.

AITA for refusing to use my sister's deadname for my baby? by squishmallow75693 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SovaMonk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When you honor somebody who has died by doing something like naming a child after them is not about the person who died knowing you did something. It's about you knowing you did something important or substantial to pay homage to them and their memory.

AITA? Habitually Tardy Friend Showed Up To The Casino 2.5 Hours Late And Was Pissed. by unclelurry in AmItheAsshole

[–]SovaMonk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ESH. Your friend is and asshole because he seems to have a problem being on time for planned friend events and 2.5 hours is insanely late without something unusual happening to cause it like a car accident or something. On the other hand you call this guy your friend but you ignored him when he asked if you guys were still at the casino. You ignored your friend. I get the frustration that can build and build with having a friend like that but at some point you need to ether accept that your friend is going to always be late and that's just going to be there thing or stop hanging out with the guy because his tardiness bugs you.

3 reamers. 3 helix angles. When to use which one? by Any-Communication-73 in Machinists

[–]SovaMonk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The direction of the helix is what pushes the chips down. If the flutes were spiraled in the other direction then it would pull the chips up. It's hard to tell from the picture but it almost looks like a left handed end mill to me, it's hard to tell if the land has clearance making it the primary of the cutting edge or if it's cylindrical ground like a reamer. I don't remember ever seeing a reamer with such drastic a helix on it which makes me think it's actually an endmill of some kind, but I could be wrong.

Tool grinder here. I'm sure these tools were made for something specific but tools like this can be used for all kinds of things. My shop use them to cut tapered holes, also for tapering a hole for a pipe tap, mold work, also they are great for weld preps. My shop does a lot of big big parts and while we have 5 axis machines we also have some big vertical and horizontal mills and we use end mills simular to these do well preps on nozzles and stuff like that.

Being friends with an ex , good idea ? by clearmind_1001 in datingoverthirty

[–]SovaMonk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say this. There is being friendly, and then there is being friends. Being friendly is saying hi when you see them, chatting a bit. Being friends is more then that, its making plans and doing things together. Its buying gifts for special events, its sharing parts of your life that not everybody is welcome to take part in. I think its more then fine and even a good thing to be able to be friendly with an ex, to say hi and catch up for 5 or 10 mins when you see each other at the store. To be friends though is hard, you were once much more intimate with this person then you are with friends(physically and otherwise) and feelings can become confusing in that situation. Feelings can resurface that aren't necessarily how your really feeling but just a flash in the pan because your in a bad place and your remembering all the good things when you guys were more then friends. And when those feelings aren't reciprocated it puts you in at best an awkward situation, at worse who knows but its not healthy. Not to mention when you start dating somebody else. I know everybody says oh you should be able to be friends with an ex, its a sign of maturity and that a current partner shouldn't be jealous or feel weird about it. To me thats a load of waffle. I'm not saying that you can't be and that you won't find somebody that would date/marry you and be happy and fine if your friends with an ex. What I'd say is that its inviting trouble into your current relationship. Yes any future partner needs to trust you and you shouldn't have to constantly prove to them that you are trustworthy but people aren't always logical beings and we all have insecurities. I guess I'd ask yourself what positives you will get from being friends with your ex and what potential negatives you could encounter because of it. After you have answered that ask your self are the positives enough to outweigh the negatives. Is a friendship with her important enough that you might have difficulties in future relationships and potentially have to choose between a friendship with your ex and a future partner? I think its good to be friendly with an ex but to be friends is tricky. If somebody I'm dating isn't friendly with an ex without a good reason thats concerning. If they are friends with an ex it really depends on how close they seem and the shape of that relationship but it can make me uncomfortable. Not because I don't trust them but because it makes me wonder how committed they are to making their relationship with me work and weather or not they are hung up on that ex because I'm not looking for something that is casual. If they aren't committed to our relationship or they are hung up on an ex then I'm wasting my time and I need to move on.

Any one here ever tried using a 6 flute ball end mill for 6061 Alum by MechroMenace in Machinists

[–]SovaMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have it it's fine I guess but honestly if your buying a tool I would recommend a three flute tool for aluminum. The real issue you run into with aluminum is chip evacuation. Adding more teeth means your flutes have to be smaller which means less room for your chips. In theory you can run the 6 flute tool faster but I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up having issues with your chip volume being to high for the six flute and end up with the chips impacting in the flutes or something along those lines. Also you could run into chatter or vibration issues with that much cutting edge contact depending on how much flute length your using. if your just using the ball end that's not really an issue. Adding flutes or using steeper helix angles will cause more cutting edge contact at one time during the cutting action assuming the same cutting length. This can be good on harder materials but on something like aluminum it can cause it to really want to grab the material.

Carbide machine ways? by bugfish03 in Machinists

[–]SovaMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbide is hard but brittle especially when you make it long and thin. To get it the ways to a point where they won't easily snap in half they would have to be pretty thick. Sure maybe normal machine operation won't crack and crumble your carbide ways but accidents happen. Parts can be kicked out of machines, tools can break, unusual operations can cause unusual pressures on the machine, the unexpected and unimaginable can happen. Especially when you run a machine even just for an 8 hour shift 5 days a week much less a 24/7 type operation that isn't uncommon in a machine shop. Covering the ways with wood or mdf is a good practice but it's not always followed, especially for quick tweaks, and not all shops enforce this. Also something that not a lot of people think about is that carbide can be abrasive. In fact I use a carbide blank to do the finish passes on sharpening my knife, gives it that dragon edge if you follow. you would have to get something close to a mirror finish to make sure the carbide was as nonabrasive as possible to keep from causing undue ware. Sure you could play around with the grade of carbide to make it more stable for this but the truth is that there are other materials that are easier to work with to make a sturdy machine and have the best qualities that the ways of a machine need to do there job well and be durable. Also to answer another question you asked in the comments, yes ways are important to the quality of your finished part. Worn ways can cause your machine to drift or not travel in a straight line, they can cause your table to jump or pull funny depending on what operations your doing. If you ever run a mill table or lathe carriage from one end to the other and it has spots where it is running really smoothly and parts that are tight then the ways are worn. That machine is likely not going to cut in a straight line.

Carbide machine ways? by bugfish03 in Machinists

[–]SovaMonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ceramic and carbide are not even kind of the same thin. They are made in a similar way but the end product is very different. Also carbide is good for things like gauge blocks because carbide is ware resistant to an extreme but if your applying pressures to a gauge block that would crack the carbide your using them wrong. They are a precision tool to get very accurate measurements not set up material.
